    Index of Egyptian History
Egyptian history constitutes an awesome period of time. Including the Ptolemies , it covers at least three thousand years (c.3100-30 BC). By contrast, the Roman Emperor Augustus was living just two thousand years ago. Only China, with a continuous history since the Shang (c.1500 BC), has at least equalled this, but just barely if we bring Egyptian history down to the last hieroglyphic inscription (394 AD). Basic knowledge of Egyptian history largely comes from Egyptian sources, i.e. in the early days nobody else was telling us about what was going on. Details come from monumental inscriptions, which really only become common in the New Kingdom (there are really none, for instance, from the III or IV Dynasties), but the fundamental structure is from king lists like the "Turin Canon" hieratic papyrus (which dates from the time of Ramesses II ), so called because it ended up in Turin, the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia , having been found in Egypt by the consul Drovetti. There are also sources like the "Table of Abydos" or "Abydos King List," carved on the Temple of Osiris at Abydos (begun by Seti I and finished by Ramesses II), and the "Table of Saqqara" from the reign of Ramesses II again. A slightly earlier list is the "Table of Karnak," from the reign of

    The sounds of ancient Egypt
Violinist believes music is key to understanding how pharaohs spoke
    May 11, 1997
Web posted at: 3:58 p.m. EDT (1958 GMT) CAIRO, Egypt (CNN) Archaeologists have been able to read Egyptian hieroglyphics since 1822, when French Egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion and British physicist Thomas Young deciphered the text of the famed Rosetta Stone. Found by French military engineers in 1799 in the Egyptian seaside town Rosetta, the slab of basalt contained the same text written in three languages: Greek, hieroglyphics the "official" Egyptian language and the everyday written language, demotic. Young and Champollion unlocked Egyptian mysteries lost for centuries, but most archaeologists believe the sounds of ancient Egypt are as lost today as they were to the men who cracked the hieroglyphics code. Classical violinist Mohamed Misri , however, disagrees. He says that by comparing ancient Egyptian song lyrics with Coptic songs of today, he has been able to approximate how the language of the pharaohs must have sounded. Coptic is the language of Egypt's centuries-old Christian community. But many Egyptologists are not convinced by Misri's musical adaptations, because Coptic contains ancient Greek in addition to ancient Egyptian words and phrasing.

    Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian history covers a continuous period of over three thousand years. To put this in perspective - most modern countries count their histories in hundreds of years. Only modern China can come anywhere near this in terms of historical continuity.
Egyptian culture declined and disappeared nearly two thousand years ago. The last vestiges of the living culture ceased to exist in AD 391 when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I closed all pagan temples throughout the Roman Empire.
It was not until Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 that the wonderful artefacts of the Egyptians were seen in Europe and their ancient culture began to awaken from its long slumber. On this site you will find lots of Egyptian stuff. There are stories of the great and in the section you can explore the ancient monuments; using interactive maps, photos, drawings, and paintings.

The Neolithic of the Levant (500 Page Book Online) Egyptian History CHRONOLOGY (Petrie Museum) [University College London] Pre-History Some 60000 years ago the Nile River began its yearly inundation of the land along its banks leaving behind rich alluvial soil. Areas close to the floodplain became attractive as a source of food and water. In time climatic changes, including periods of aridity, further served to confine human habitation to the Nile Valley although this was not always true. From the Chalcolithic period (the Copper Age : beginning about 4000 BC) into the early part of the Old Kingdom people apparently used an extended part of the land. In the 7th millennium BC Egypt was environmentally hospitable and evidence of settlements from that time has been found in the low desert areas of southern or Upper Egypt; remains of similar occupation have been discovered at Nubian sites in modern Sudan. Enough pottery has been found in Upper Egyptian tombs from the 4th millennium BC (in the Pre-Dynastic period) to establish a relative dating sequence. The Pre-Dynastic Period which ends with the unification of Egypt under one king is generally subdivided into three parts, each of which refers to the site at which its archaeological materials were found:

Its three wars with Israel in 1948, 1967 and 1973, then its eventual peace with its adversary in 1979, have seen Egypt move from being a warring nation to become a key representative in the peace process. OVERVIEW

LEADERS MEDIA But the historic step taken by President Anwar Sadat in the Camp David agreement with Israel saw the expulsion of Egypt from the Arab League until 1989, and in 1981 Mr Sadat was assassinated by Islamic extremists angry at his moves to clamp down on their activities. Since then, President Hosni Mubarak has taken a more moderate line, but Islamic groups have continued their campaigns sporadically, being responsible for deadly attacks that have often targeted tourists and resort areas. Campaigners for political reform have become more vocal in recent times and have taken to the streets in defiance of an emergency law, in force since 1981. Activists say the law restricts political expression.

    Egypt Introduction
Situated at the northeastern corner of Africa, Egypt is bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, in the east by Israel and the Red Sea, in the South by Sudan, and to the west by Libya.
The altitude of Egypt ranges from 132 m (436 ft) below sea level in the Libyan Desert to about 2,629 m (8,600ft) at Mount Catherine in the Sinai Pennisula. The Nile delta is a broad alluvial land, sloping to the sea for 100 miles, with a 155 mile maritime front between Alexandria and Port Sa'id. South of Cairo, most of the country (known as Upper Egypt) is a tableland rising to some 457m (1,500 ft), and the narrow valley of the Nile is enclosed by cliffs as high as 548m (1,800 ft). A series of cascades and rapids at Aswan, known as the First Cataract, forms a barrier to movement upstream.
