http://www.ask-aladdin.com/history1.htm
The origins of ancient Egyptian civilization, which many regard as one of the fountainheads of Western culture, cannot be established with certainty. Archaeological evidence suggests that early dwellers in the Nile Valley were influenced by cultures of the Near East, but the degree of this influence is yet to be determined. Describing the development of Egyptian civilization, like attempts to identify its intellectual foundations, is largely a process of conjecture based on archaeological discoveries of enduring ruins, tombs, and monuments, many of which contain invaluable specimens of the ancient culture. Inscriptions in hieroglyphs, for instance, have provided priceless data. The framework for the study of the Dynastic period of Egyptian history, between the 1st dynasty and the Ptolemaic period, relies on the Aegyptiaca of Manetho, a Ptolemaic priest of the 3rd century BC, who organized the country's rulers into 30 dynasties, roughly corresponding to families. General agreement exists on the division of Egyptian history, up to the conquest of Alexander the Great, into Old, Middle, and New kingdoms with intermediate periods, followed by the late and Ptolemaic periods, but chronology and genealogy are continually being refined in light of new evidence and by the use of increasingly sophisticated dating techniques.

125 Washington Avenue Albany, New York information@ albanyinstitute.org Ancient Egyptian Art and Culture BRIEF HISTORY Egypt was ancient even to those cultures we regard as ancient. It was a powerful nation a thousand years before the Minoans of Crete built their palace at Knossos, and about 900 years before the Israelites followed Moses out of Egypt. It flourished when tribesmen still dwelled in huts above the Tiber River in what is now Italy. Egypt was viewed by Greeks and Romans of 2,000 years ago in much the same way as the ruins of Greece and Rome are viewed today. The first flowering of Egyptian culture occurred a few centuries after the unification, during the period of the Old Kingdom (Dynasties III-VIII) from about 2,700 BC to 2,150 BC. With a strong political and social structure in place, agriculture flourished and Egyptians regularly sent cargoes of lentils, textiles, papyrus, and other products to other countries in exchange for copper, bronze, gold, silver, ivory, rare woods, turquoise, and exotic animal skins. A system of writing called hieroglyphics was introduced and this promoted the creation of stories, poems, and religious texts. The Egyptians also devised mathematical methods for calculating taxes, land surveys, weights and measures, distance, and time. They also explored astronomy, engineering, and medical sciences.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Egypt was inhabited by hunters over 250,000 years ago when the region was a green grassland. The Palaeolithic period around 25,000BC brought climatic changes which turned Egypt into a desert. The inhabitants survived by hunting and fishing and through a primitive form of cultivation. Desertification of Egypt was halted by rains which allowed communities of cultivators to settle in Middle Egypt and the Nile Delta. These farmers grew wheat, flax and wove linen fabrics in addition to tending flocks.
The first indigenous civilizations in Egypt have been identified in the south of the country through archaeological excavations. The Badarian culture is the earliest known developed Egyptian civilization based on farming, hunting and mining. Badarians produced fine pottery and carved objects as well as acquiring turquoise and wood through trading.
The Naqada lived in larger settlements about 4,000BC and produced decorated pottery and figurines made from clay and ivory which indicate they were a war-like people. Naqada artefacts from 3,300BC show further development both in terms of culture and technology. Evidence of irrigation systems and more advanced burial sites, as well as the use of alien materials like lapis lazuli, indicate a cultural diversity and the development of external trading.

Egypt History
Egypt has the oldest continuously existing civilization in the world. Most scholars believe that the Egyptian kingdom was first unified in about 3100 BC. Egypt maintained its independence and unity for many centuries thereafter. It suffered disunity now and then and experienced brief periods of foreign domination—by the Semitic Hyksos in the 17th and 16th centuries BC, the Assyrians in the 7th century BC, and the Persians in the 6th and 5th centuries BC—before the arrival of Macedonian conqueror Alexander the Great in 332 BC. Alexander made Egypt a part of his vast empire. Alexander's empire broke up after his death in 323 BC. One of his generals, Ptolemy, became ruler of Egypt, and in 305 BC he assumed the title of king.

History and Government
History: The history of Egypt is one of the richest, oldest and most varied of any country in the world and the country’s place in the Middle East is as central now as it was in the fourth millennium BC. The unification of the Lower and the Upper Kingdoms, in about 3180 BC, marks a convenient starting point for Egyptian history. This dynamic, culturally sophisticated and powerful kingdom on the banks of the Nile grew into one of the greatest civilisations of the ancient world. The pre-Hellenic period is reckoned in Kingdoms (Old, Middle and New) and subdivided into dynasties. The IVth dynasty saw the construction of such architectural masterpieces as the Great Pyramid, while the XIth and XIIth saw the zenith of Egyptian power at the start of the second millennium. Tutankhamun, whose famous tomb was discovered in 1922, ruled briefly during the XVIIIth dynasty. From the XXth dynasty onwards, the power of Egypt was on the wane and the country was overrun on several occasions by foreign powers. The latest and most permanent of these invasions, which brought the Pharaonic period to an end, was that of Alexander the Great, in 332 BC. During the Hellenic and Augustan Roman period (circa AD 30), the emergence of law and literature in Alexandria allowed for seven centuries of comparative peace and economic stability. From the middle of the fourth century, Egypt became part of the Eastern Empire. Then, in AD 642, an invading Arab army – one manifestation of the rapid Islamic conquests that followed the death of Muhammad – was welcomed by the Coptic Christians in preference to their previous Greek rulers. The Fatamids gained control of the country in the late 10th century, however, their power declined after a century or so. The subsequent revival of Muslim fortunes and the reawakening of the spirit of

of Egypt
Background:
In about 3100 B.C., Egypt was united under a ruler known as Mena, or Menes, who inaugurated the 30 pharaonic dynasties into which Egypt's ancient history is divided the Old and the Middle Kingdoms and the New Empire. The pyramids at Giza (near Cairo), which were built in the fourth dynasty, testify the power of the pharaonic religion and state.
Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world. Nominally independent from the UK in 1922, Egypt acquired full sovereignty following World War II.
The completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1971 and the resultant Lake Nasser have altered the time-honored place of the Nile river in the agriculture and ecology of Egypt.

Egyptian History in Mage
Egypt was shaped by magick; nowhere else the barriers between the worlds, the past and present, the dead and living, the gods and men are so weak and convoluted. Through millennia the Nile valley has been shaped by gods and mages as well as the beliefs of sleepers.
Prehistory
The prehistory of Egypt is only conjectural. According to the technocratic archeologists, there were humans there 250,000 BC. The Order of Hermes instead speak of how the Creator (either Atum, Chnum or Ptah) and the Pure Ones created the world from the first mound of order in the sea of chaos, and then created mankind. Some mages speculate that the secret of creation still exists hidden somewhere in the Nile Valley, and eagerly seek any hints of forgotten truths. Many mages believe that what made Egypt unique was the closeness between the inhabiants and the gods; this explains the sometimes confusing mixtures between different gods and myths, since most umbrood have a very tenuous individuality and change appearance and properties depending on the viewer and his beliefs. In Egypt, human mages interacted freely with the gods, blurring the line between man and god. In these mythical times, time, space and individuality were still undefined and liquid, a state not unlike the Australian concept of the Dreamtime. There was no contradiction between seeing the sun as the eye of Horus, a sphere of gold rolled by a scarab or twelve gods ruling over each hour of day - all were equally true. Everyone consisted of an agglomerate of souls that could move apart and meld together. To bring order and structure to the world the humans developed ritual and eventually magick.

Adapted from Leila Ahmed, Women and Gender in Islam . New Haven: Yale University Press, 1992. •July 23, 1952: The Egyptian Revolution of 1952 overturned the monarchy of King Farouk and led to the temporary installation of a government under Naguib, "the short-lived president of the revolutionary council" •1956óembrace of "Arab Socialism" in Egypt which led to sweeping social reforms, including the suffrage of women in 1956 and the right of women to run for political office. This period began a two decade period of migration into urban areas, such as Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said, where economic and educational opportunities were greater. Leila Ahmed writes that "in exposing hidden physical abuses, whether culturally sanctioned and openly performed, like the practice of clitoridectomy, or culturally invisible, furtively committed, and denied abuses, such as sexual abuse of children, no writers has played a more important and eloquent role than Nawal el Saadawiónor has any feminist been more outspoken and done more to challenge the misogynist and androcentric practices of the culture" (215). However, Ahmed also strongly criticizes Saadawiís totalizing generalizations about patriarchy, Islam and Egyptian culture.

Vegetarian is healthier
There is no question that being a vegetarian is healthier. Vegetarians
  • Face about 30 percent lower risk of death from heart disease than do those who eat meat, fish or poultry.
  • Some studies show cancer deaths are at least 40 percent lower among vegetarians.
  • Vegetarians have a lesserer chance of suffering from kidney and gall stones, diet-related diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Lower cholersterol.

Kill the cow to make the cheese!
Some vegetarian meat replacements at last.
I was not always a vegetarian. In my teenage years burgers where my favorite and often daily food. Ever since I wised up and stopped eating the flesh of animals I have had that hunger, a hunger that would not be satisfied except by a juicy burger. I tried to create burger replacements, most of these experiments in substitutive cooking have ended up in the garbage bin. The result is years of hunger dreaming about the perfect burger, one that is tasty and juicy but that you do not have to take an animal’s soul out of its body to eat it. You can imagine how happy I am when I found Vegetarian Burger in the supermarket. AHEF has prepared a full range of vegetarian meat replacement products, both frozen and canned.

The conference will examine the ways in which the cultures of Egypt - predynastic, dynastic, Hellenistic, Roman, late-antique, Islamic, colonial - have perpetually been re-configured in response to changing ideologies and strategies for appropriating the past. As well as presenting new or neglected sets of data, we hope that contributors will also be inspired to offer papers that constitute a fresh look at familiar evidence from a variety of theoretical viewpoints.
