A Brief History of Egypt
Ami Isseroff
Egypt is one of the cradles of civilization in the Middle East. Traces of early man were found in Egypt dating back as early as 700,000 years ago. Egypt and ancient Canaan to the north probably served as the bridges by which successive waves of humans: homo erectus homo habilis homo neanderthalensis and homo sapiens , evidently migrated out of Africa and into Mesopotamia and Europe. Ancient Egyptians used a phonetic-pictograph writing called hieroglyphics by the Ancient Greeks. This system evolved from portrayal of pictures of objects to using stylized representation of objects to represent sound combinations and compose words, to a phonetic alphabet much like our own. Ancient Egypt boasted considerable achievements in art, medicine, astronomy and literature, and was the hub of civilization in much of the Near East and North Africa. The unique history of ancient Egypt and visible monuments to that history helped Egyptians to preserve a distinct national consciousness, and to remain a separate entity during the years of Arab, Mameluke and Ottoman conquest.

What we now know as ancient egypt wasn’t always one country, ruled over by one monarch (pharaoh). Back to history Main Page Forward to the 4th Dynasty
http://pharaoh.heavengames.com/egypt/history/genhist/d3.shtml
Pre-dynastic Egypt
4th millennium BC, the land of Egypt was covered by many different nomadic tribes, with different cultures and traditions. From about 4000BC though, these diverse tribes began to conglomerate together. The first kings of Egypt are of unknown origin, and we cannot be sure exactly how many of them there were, as the archaeological evidence has either been obliterated or not yet discovered. From what we can gather, there were 3 dynasties (0-2), the heads of which probably came from a place called "Thinis", near Abydos (in Middle Egypt). Because of this, these monarchs are called the Thinite Kings. The Old Kingdom
The first pharaoh of the Old Kingdom was Sanakhte Following the death of Sanakhte, Djoser the Step Pyramid of Saqqara Djoser was succeeded by Sekhemkhet Khaba The last king of the 3rd dynasty was Huni pyramid of Meydum to him, but the evidence for this is shaky. His mummy has never been found. Back to History Main Page Forward to the 4th Dynasty

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt PYRAMIDS OF GIZA The mysterious Pyramids The Pyramids of Giza are the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt. These massive stone structures were built around 4500 years ago on a rocky desert plateau close to the Nile. But the intriguing Egyptian pyramids were more than just tombs for kings. The mysteries surrounding their symbolism, design and purpose have inspired passionate debate. It is likely that many of these mysteries will never be solved... The rise and fall of the pyramid era The pyramids epitomize ancient Egypt, yet the biggest were constructed during a short span of time early in a civilization that was to last almost three millennia. The first large Egyptian pyramid was the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, built during the third dynasty of the Old Kingdom to protect the body of the king Djoser who died around 2649 BC. It was this feat that heralded the short age of the gigantic stone pyramids of ancient Egypt. The first large pyramid in Egypt was the Step Pyramid of Djoser. It was built at Saqqara, about 15 kilometers from Giza.

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt ANCIENT THEBES Temples for gods and kings Present day Luxor in Egypt is built on the Nile at the site of ancient Thebes, a city that reached its glory under New Kingdom pharaohs. It was in Thebes that the imposing temples of Karnak and Luxor were built over three thousand years ago to honor the great god Amun. Successive pharaohs endeavored to outdo their predecessors by enlarging and embellishing these cult centers. By doing this they hoped to please the gods and enhance their own status. Over the years, the Karnak and Luxor temples grew ever more magnificent... Houses of the gods
Egyptian cult temples like those at Karnak and Luxor were dedicated to gods who were served there by the pharaoh and his priests. In return, the gods gave life and order to the land of Egypt. The pharaoh of ancient Egypt was more than a head of state, he was looked upon as a divine link between the gods and his people.
The principal builders in ancient Thebes included the New Kingdom pharaohs Tuthmosis III and Amenhotep III of dynasty 18, and Ramesses II of dynasty 19. Ramesses II, known as Ramesses the Great, was a prolific builder enamoured of colossal statues of himself.

    Ancient Egypt - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman The story of ancient Egypt began about 8,000 years ago, when farmers started to plant crops and raise animals in the Nile Valley. By about 3400 BC the Egyptians were building walled towns, and the country was divided into numerous small states. Soon afterward, the northern part of the country (Lower Egypt) was united with the lands upstream (Upper Egypt) to form one country under a single king.
Memphis and Thebes were the principal capitals of ancient Egypt. Memphis served as the first capital and the center of the Egyptian government. According to tradition, King Menes founded the city in 3100 BC. Its ruins can now be found 20 kilometers south of Cairo. Menes is traditionally considered to be the founder of the first royal dynasty in ancient Egypt, which ruled the country for about 400 years. During this period, Egyptians developed a national government and began to use writing.
Egyptians had a very developed system of writing. In fact, the written language ancient Egyptians left behind is what gives modern people the great amount of information to learn about them. Inscriptions providing detailed information about their lives can be found on everything from obelisks to tombs. From about 3100 BC, Egyptians used pictures called hieroglyphs, and originally there were about 1,000 of those symbols.

Tell us about the mummification. 6th Grade Student, Natrona, PA, USA Mummification was only practiced in a few societies, with Egypt being the most prominent. In pre-dynastic times, the deceased were placed in shallow graves, in the fetal position. Burial in the desert conditions resulted in natural mummification. Once they started the new practice of constructing formal tombs for burial, some form of artificial mummification was needed. Mummification was highly developed, by Old Kingdom times. It became very elaborate by the late New Kingdom. It then required some seventy days to complete the process. Many of the best preserved royal mummies date from the New Kingdom. Less complex mummification versions were performed on ordinary citizens.
John Anthony West described in his book, The Travelers’ Key to Ancient Egypt , the process of a royal mummification as follows: (1) The brain extracted through the nostrils. (2) Removal of the viscera through an incision in the flank. (3) Sterilization of body cavity and viscera. (4) Viscera cleaned, treated, dehydrated, anointed, and coated with molten resin. (5) Body packed temporarily with natron (a naturally occurring mixture of carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride and sulphate of sodium, an effective dehydrating and preserving agent). (6) Body packed in natron for forty days. (7) Temporary packing materials removed. (8) Subcutaneous packing of limbs with sand, clay or other earthy material. (9) Body packed with resin-soaked linens, and fragrances such as myrrh and cinnamon. (10) Anointing with unguents. (11) Final treating and anointing of the body surfaces. (12) Elaborate wrapping in fine linen gauze, with innumerable amulets, magic symbols, and jewelry included in the wrapping.
