THE HISTORY OF EGYPT
About 5,000 years ago, a remarkable way of life, or civilization, grew up along the banks of the Nile River in Egypt. It flourished for over 3,000 years, longer than most other civilizations in the world's history. Egypt is among the most influential of Arab states. It lies between Africa and the Middle East. This ancient country holds a history of over 6,000 years and has many exciting attractions for travelers. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, the tomb of young King Tut are just a few attractions that interest and excite people of all ages. EGYPT'S CREATION Egyptian history begins around 3300 BC. This was when the Egyptians finally had enough symbols in their writing to record history. From 3100 BC inscriptions created a way for later Egyptians. It was also the time when the pharaoh, King Menes, created Egypt by uniting the two parts of Egypt, also known as Upper and Lower Egypt, into a single kingdom. He started Memphis in the north and Abydos in the south as his capital cities. A series of strong and able rulers established a well organized government. The calendar was introduced during this time and the sun-god Re was the most loved god-figure. Over time, authority began to disappear and Egypt was controlled by foreign princes. These rulers introduced the horses and chariots to Egypt.

Ancient Egypt is perhaps the most facinating of the ancient civilizations. Even the Ancient Greeks thought themselves to be a young and inexperienced society compared to the Egyptians. Indeed, the Ancient Egyptian civilization was one of the longest in the west, beginning in approximately 3000 B.C., and lasting until nearly 300 B.C. What is amazing about the Egyptian's culture is not their rapid growth and development, but their ability to preserve the past and prevail with relatively little change. For example, today in the United States we drastically change the style of our clothing each decade, while Egypitan dress did not vary over the thousands of years. Theirs was a civilization where the past lived in the present. Ancient Egypt is a starting point in the history of western art. Pyramids and sphinxes have become symbols of Egypt, but a closer look reveals artistic genius in many forms. This web site focuses on Egyptian Religion, Cultural Life, and Art. An Introduction to Ancient Egyptian History
Life in ancient Egypt was centered largely on agriculture. The majority of the people were involved in farming, and the growing season lasted eight-nine months. Wheat, fruits and vegetables were the principal crops, although there was some pastoral farming of cattle, sheep, or goats. Farmers in ancient Egypt worked to reach a level of subsistence so that they could feed themselves and pay their taxes. During the annual flooding of the Nile, which typically lasted from July through November, farming was impossible. But when the waters receded, a thick layer of fertile silt over the farmlands remained to insure rich soil for their crops and thick grasses for their grazing animals. The country of Egypt consisted of two narrow strips of arable land lining either bank of the river Nile, from Aswan to the northern Delta. Just beyond the farmlands lay enormous deserts. The Nile was the lifeblood of Egypt. Its cycle of flooding growth, death, and rebirth to new growth became the cycle of everyday life, and also of Egyptian religion and understanding of an afterlife. The people of Egypt were dependent on the river for more than their food. It insured a line of communication and transportation among the provinces of the kingdom. The pharaohs took advantage of the Nile as a means to transport their armies, thus maintaining a strong, unified nation.

Tools and artifacts indicate that humans lived in the Nile valley about 250,000 years ago, an era known as the Pre-dynastic Period. Archaeological findings point to the emergence of a dominant political and religious culture in the Nile valley by about 3300 BC, when King Menes, created Egypt by uniting the two parts of Egypt, also known as Upper and Lower Egypt, into a single kingdom. He made Memphis in the north and Abydos in the south as his capital cities, this important event marked the beginning of the dynastic period of the Pharaohs.
Historians divide Egyptian civilization into four Periods, the Old, Middle, New, and the Late Kingdoms. These eras are separated from each another by, respectively, the First, Second, and Third Intermediate periods. During these times the political divisions of Middle and Upper Egypt broke apart under the influence of weak rulers, fragmenting the central government and disrupting the administrative authority of the country.
Persian invaders occupied Egypt in the sixth century BC until 332 BC, when invasion by the forces of Alexander the Great brought an end to Persian rule. After his death, Ptolemy took Egypt and in 306 BC declared himself pharaoh, establishing Egypt's last dynasty. Ptolemaic Egypt was one of the great powers of the Hellenistic world, at various times extending its rule over parts of Syria, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Libya and Phoenicia. Alexandria became the cultural and intellectual center of the ancient world. The Ptolemaic line ended with the suicide of Cleopatra in 30 BC.

http://www.presidency.gov.eg/html/history.html
E gypt is home to one of the richest and most ancient civilizations in the world extending to several millennia BC It was the Pharaoh Menes who united the two kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt, inaugurating what came to be known as the Ancient Empire (3200-2270 BC). Ramses II is another Pharaoh who deserves mentioning. He ruled from 1279 to 1212 BC and is known for his prodigious buildings, rising temples, statues and other monuments throughout Egypt. Among his major achievements was the signing of the first Peace Treaty to be recorded in history, concluded between Egypt and the Hitites. Another great Pharaoh is Akhnaton who reigned from 1379 to 1362 BC. He was originally called Amenophis IV, but changed his name in honor of Aten, the Sun God. Akhnaton is considered to have heralded the concept of monotheism in the history of religion. A lexander the Great arrived to Egypt in the late autumn of 332 BC. He founded Alexandria in 331 BC as a gateway to his motherland, Greece. Alexandria became a major center for trading. Its Library became a cultural center that made an important contribution to civilization. The Ptolemies ruled Egypt until 30 BC and were succeeded by the Romans until 642 AD when the Arabs arrived. It was during the Roman period when Christianity came to Egypt. It was in Alexandria where the great Catechtical School, which produced the early fathers of the Church, emerged

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt TEMPLES AND TOMBS A journey along the Nile The waters of the mighty Nile allowed the otherwise dry land of Egypt to become a cradle for one of the world's greatest ancient civilizations. From the start of the Old Kingdom around 2686 BC, an era of rule by pharaohs of more than 30 family dynasties continued almost unbroken for nearly 3000 years. After the glorious New Kingdom, the age of the Egyptian pharaohs ended with decline and rule by the Ptolemies. Today, we can travel along the Nile and explore a succession of old temples and tombs that are testimonies to the remarkable achievements of the people of ancient Egypt. The Old Kingdom: AGE OF THE PYRAMIDS The ancient Egyptian civilization of the Nile Valley came of age under Old Kingdom rulers of dynasties 3 to 6. Their greatest legacies are the huge Giza Pyramids, the results of a spectacular program of pyramid building. The Pyramids of Giza epitomize ancient Egypt, but they were the results of a short period of pyramid building during the Old Kingdom. The Giza Pyramids were built as tombs for the fourth dynasty kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure who ruled Egypt through 2589-2504 BC. The largest is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. But the ancient Egyptians did not think of the pyramids just as resting places for the dead. They believed their rulers were divine god-kings who would ascend from the pyramid to take their place among the gods in the afterlife.

A word of caution
This site is based on what is considered more or less orthodox chronology, which of course means that there are other, deviant chronologies. On the whole I prefer the plodding examination of facts however few and poorly understood to the flights of fancy of some of the alternative historians. Chances are it gets us a bit closer to the truth, which, unless timetravel is invented, we will never know.
One would like to think that physical remains should leave little to doubt. But stone artefacts and buildings are remarkably difficult to date [ ]. Theories - from the sublime to the ridiculous - of when, how, why and by whom the Great Pyramids, for instance, have been erected, are legion.

Archaeologists from UCLA and the University of Delaware have unearthed the most extensive remains to date from sea trade between India and Egypt during the Roman Empire, adding to mounting evidence that spices and other exotic cargo traveled into Europe over sea as well as land. "These findings go a long way toward improving our understanding of the way in which a whole range of exotic cargo moved into Europe during antiquity," said Willeke Wendrich, an assistant professor of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA and co-director of the project. "When cost and political conflict prevented overland transport, ancient mariners took to the Red Sea, and the route between India and Egypt appears to have been even more productive than we ever thought." "The Silk Road gets a lot of attention as a trade route, but we've found a wealth of evidence indicating that sea trade between Egypt and India was also important for transporting exotic cargo, and it may have even served as a link with the Far East," added fellow co-director Steven E. Sidebotham, a history professor at the University of Delaware.

Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian history covers a continuous period of over three thousand years. To put this in perspective - most modern countries count their histories in hundreds of years. Only modern China can come anywhere near this in terms of historical continuity.
Egyptian culture declined and disappeared nearly two thousand years ago. The last vestiges of the living culture ceased to exist in AD 391 when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I closed all pagan temples throughout the Roman Empire.
It was not until Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 that the wonderful artefacts of the Egyptians were seen in Europe and their ancient culture began to awaken from its long slumber. On this site you will find lots of Egyptian stuff. There are stories of the great and in the section you can explore the ancient monuments; using interactive maps, photos, drawings, and paintings.

Pharonic History (Part 1)
When most people think of Egyptian history they think of the pyramids, mummies and the pharaohs. But there is so much more to the story of Egypt's past. Egypt has a longer written history than any other nation. The next two weeks we will briefly survey the history of Egypt from the dawn of civilization to present. Our first section will survey the history of Egypt from approximately 3100 BC to 30 BC, or from Pharaonic times to the decline of Greek rule in Egypt. The earliest stages of Egyptian history can be divided into seven stages. An Egyptian priest named Manetho wrote a history of Egypt dividing her past through Greek rule into 31 Dynasties. We will try to organize those dynasties into the various stages of ancient Egyptian history, mentioning the more significant rulers. The earliest period is known as the Archaic or Early Dynastic Period (3100-2686 BC). This consists of Dynasties 1 and 2. Most of the rulers and events in this time are somewhat shadowy. We learn of a certain ruler named Narmer, who unified Upper and Lower Egypt. This is commemorated on a monumental dedication palette. Manetho tells us that Narmer was killed by a hippopotamus! Dynasties 3 through 6 are known as the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 BC). The Old Kingdom is also known as the Pyramid Age, because it is the time when many of the great pyramids were built including the ones on the Giza Plateau. The earliest pyramid was a Step Pyramid or ziggurat, built in Saqqara for Djoser. The pyramid was designed by the king's leading advisor, a man named Imhotep. King Snefru had a pyramid constructed in Dasshur with a curious change of pitch toward the top. This is known as the Bent Pyramid.

Egypt Under French Control (1798-1801)
Egypt had always been, since antiquity, an important land route to the east. In 1798 the French, led by a young general named Napoleon Bonaparte, invaded Egypt and quickly conquered northern Egypt. They wanted to control trade with the east. Napoleon brought with him a number of educated people interested in recording Egypt's past. Teams of artists drew pictures of flora, fauna and antiquities. Their efforts were published in 1801 in a classic 20 volume work called The Description of Egypt which is still a standard reference work on Egypt filled with marvelous drawings. This and other efforts would introduce Europe to the marvels of Egyptian antiquities. Grave robbers, antiquities dealers and explorers came to Egypt to search for hidden treasures. Egyptology and archaeology were born. A number of important discoveries were actually made by Napoleon's French troops. Napoleon, however, ran into a number of problems in Egypt. Grain supply from Upper Egypt was cut off and the British occupied the ports to the north. Napoleon's ships, filled with antiquities, were captured by the British under the direction of Admiral Nelson. The British Museum now has one of the most extraordinary collections of Egyptian antiquities in the world, outside of Egypt. Napoleon and the French army eventually evacuated Egypt but left a strong cultural impact and reintroduced Egypt to Europe.
