History of Egypt series. Ancient Egypt Greek and Roman Egypt Early Arab Egypt Ottoman Egypt ... Hathor The history of Egypt is the longest continuous history, as a unified state, of any country in the world. The Nile valley forms a natural geographic and economic unit, bounded to the east and west by deserts, to the north by the sea and to the south by the Cataracts of the Nile. The need to have a single authority to manage the waters of the Nile led to the creation of the world's first state in Egypt in about 3000 BC . Egypt's peculiar geography made it a difficult country to attack, which is why Pharaonic Egypt was for so long an independent and self-contained state. Once Egypt did succumb to foreign rule; however, it proved unable to escape from it, and for 2,300 years Egypt was governed by foreigners: Persians Greeks Romans Byzantines ... Turks and British . When Gamal Abdel Nasser President of Egypt 1954–1970) remarked that he was the first native Egyptian to exercise sovereign power in the country since Pharaoh Nectanebo II , deposed by the Persians in 343 BC , he was only exaggerating slightly.

Egypt History Term of the Day
A term a day about the history of ancient Egypt for African History Month. February is African History month. A perfect time to learn about the ancient history of Egypt. To me, the most fascinating aspect of ancient Egypt is the length of time its style of government lasted. The family of the rulers changed, and sure, Egypt had shifting borders, sometimes extending further south into Africa, sometimes extending east into what is now the Middle East, but it was still Egypt, and despite the fact that a Greek follower of Alexander the Great took over as ruler of Egypt, it kept the same system of government with a pharaoh at its head for not just centuries, but millennia from 2920-31 B.C. Because of the climate of Egypt, as well as the religious beliefs of the ancients, monuments in its desert, still standing five thousand years later, reveal information about who the ancient people were. How closely related they are to the inhabitants of today's Egypt, we don't know, but we do know that the builders of the past had practical knowledge of geometric measurement and amazing building skills.

This period of some 400 years was the formative period for the Egyptian civilization. There were great advances in the fields of writing, painting and architecture. Death cult was developed and sophisticated, where royals used mastabas and surrounding complexes for their tombs. The unification of Egypt was not completed through the period, and regional tensions persisted. It was first with King Khasekhemwy that the unification was completed and identities of the two Egypts reconciled. Old Kingdom 2686- 2181 BCE. 3rd- 6th Dynasty.

For the history prior to the Arab conquest, please refer to Ancient Egypt: History
636 CE: Arab conquest starts. Egypt is under their total control by 642. Arabic language and Islam are introduced.
The Fatimids , a Shi'i dynasty with Tunisia as base, conquers Egypt. Cairo is founded as their new capital. The Fatimids are sacked, when Saladin unites the country with Syria. The Ayyubid dynasty is established, and Egypt returns to Sunni Islam. A revolt among the war captives, known as Mamlukes, starts and has as a final outcome the overthrow of the Ayyubids. Sultan Selim 1 of the Ottoman Empire takes control over Cairo. From now on, Egypt is reduced to a province inside the Ottoman Empire. The arrival of Napoleon, and his French army. Napoleon takes control over strategic places in Egypt. The most important results of the French arrival, is that contact with the Western world is restored for Egypt, as well as that the modern science of Egyptology starts. The French are expelled, but the memory of them impregnates the way of thinking among the ruling elite of Egypt.
