Government, Kingship and Law in Ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptian Government and Bureaucracy by Marie Parsons In theory the king was the only landholder, the only priest, the only judge and the only warrior, in ancient Egypt. In practice, he surrounded himself with ministers and officials who worked under the supervision of the vizier. Kings shown on palettes and maceheads, and on tomb paintings and reliefs, are always depicted attended by servants and courtiers. Ancient Egyptian Regalia by Marie Parsons During the Early Dynastic period, the king of ancient Egypt already had much of the trappings of royal regalia familiar from later times, including the double crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt and various scepters. The crowns, scepters and other elements offered and represented power and protection. They also set the king apart from everyone else and conveyed his authority, both secular and religious. Egypt: Government Uses National Security to Stifle Dissent
Muslim Brotherhood Detainees Should Be Released Without Delay
(Washington, June 22, 2005) — The Egyptian government has detained hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members solely for exercising their rights to freedom of speech, association and assembly, Human Rights Watch said today. The Egyptian government should not use public security as a pretext to punish people for peacefully trying to exercise their basic rights.

Press Release, February 4, 2005 Free Email Newsletter Contribute to Human Rights Watch The Muslim Brotherhood, a banned but tolerated group, staged large demonstrations in Egyptian cities in early May calling for political reform. At least 800 members were arrested, and more than 300 are still in custody, most without charge. In a letter sent to President Husni Mubarak, Human Rights Watch called on the government to release the detainees without delay.
Mahmoud `Izzat, secretary-general of the organization, and Dr. `Issam al-Irian, a prominent activist, are among scores who are being investigated on charges of belonging to an illegal organization, possession of publications and spreading propaganda of a nature to disturb public security, and promoting the use of force to breach the Constitution. Lawyers for the men say the last charge, based on allegations that they urged demonstrators to attack the police, are groundless but allow the prosecutor to refer the cases to a military court under the country’s counterterrorism laws.

Egypt: Government Must Address Torture Epidemic
Abuse Suspected in 17 Deaths in Detention over Two Years
(New York, February 26, 2004) – Egypt’s security forces and police routinely torture and abuse detainees, particularly during interrogation, and the government’s failure to address the problem has created an atmosphere of impunity, Human Rights Watch said in a new briefing paper released today. Egypt’s security forces used to employ torture primarily against political dissidents, especially suspected Islamist activists and sympathizers. Nowadays, ordinary Egyptians who find themselves in police custody for any reason whatsoever risk being tortured.

An appendix details 17 cases of death in detention in 2002 and 2003 in which torture is known or suspected to be the cause of death.

Cops, Egypt government supporters smash opposition rally

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Police and Egyptian government supporters beat dozens of opposition activists with batons, sometimes kicking them as they lay on the ground, during a protest Saturday against President Hosni Mubarak days after he announced his bid for re-election promising greater democracy in Egypt. Several hundred men and women were still gathering to begin their march toward Cairo's main square when men in plainclothes descended on them, swinging billy clubs and assaulting the demonstrators. Circles of burly government supporters surrounded activists sprawled on the pavement, kicking them in the head and ribs and tearing at their clothes. Others lifted protesters in the air by the arms and legs, hauling them off to police trucks. One elderly man wandered in a daze, his head bleeding.
