Egypt's Geography Rivers, Lakes, and Seas Egypt may be a dry, scorching place but it also has a lot of water resources. One of Egypt's greatest sources of water is the great Nile River. The Nile River is very different than other rivers. It goes south to north and it empties in the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile River is about 960 miles (1,545 km) long! Every year, it floods and enriches the soils of the land so it's very important. Also, the Egyptians used the Nile as a clock to see what time of year it was. Another source of water is the Red Sea. The Red Sea is an inland sea. The Red Sea is approximately 169,000 square miles. Its width is 190 miles long and it has a depth of 9,800 ft. Lake Nasser is in Egypt too. It extends to the south across the Sudan border. It is about 480 km long and about 16 km in width. About 2/3 of the lake lies in Egypt. Deserts One desert in Egypt is the Sahara. The Sahara is the biggest desert in all of Egypt. It has rocks, sand, and gravel. It is so big that it is almost the size of the U.S. It is about 3 1/2 million square miles and extends 3,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. The Sahara Desert is in the northwest part of Egypt. Another desert is the Western Desert. The Western Desert is one of the driest deserts in the whole world. The elevation of the desert is more than 3,300 ft in the southwest. The Libyan Desert is also in Egypt. The Libyan is mostly dunes. Several depressions are also in the desert which were caused by wind-erosion.

Each god or goddess had its own cult centre, four of which had special importance. In the northern city of Heliopolis (in the Nile delta, near modern Cairo), Ra, the sun god, was the supreme god. Hermopolis in middle Egypt was a once-great city and the home of Thoth, the god of wisdom. Memphis, now just a ruin about 12 miles from Cairo, was once the capital of Egypt. Ptah, creator of the world, was the supreme god here. Perhaps most important was Thebes (underneath modern Luxor), the religious and political capital of Upper Egypt. Here, Amun, the state god and creator of all things, was worshipped. The famous Valley of the Kings lies nearby.

The Valley of the Kings
By Marie Parsons Geography of the Valley
The first king of the New Kingdom, Ahmose of the 18 th Dynasty, built a pyramid-like structure at Abydos , which may or may not have been his original tomb. But all the remaining rulers of the period, except for the so-called Amarna interregnum, had their tombs cut into the rocks of the West Bank at Thebes , specifically at the Valley of the Kings . From Thutmose I in the th Dynasty of the New Kingdom period, all the kings, and occasionally high officials of that period, were buried in the secluded wadi, or dry gully, which today is called Valley of the Kings. The peak known in Arabic as el-Qurn was known in ancient times as dehent , the Horn, and was sacred to the goddesses Hathor and Meretseger , "She who loves Silence." The Valley, known as Biban el-Muluk, "doorway or gateway of the kings," or, the Wadyein , meaning "the two valleys," is actually composed of two separate branches. The main eastern branch, called ta set aat

The Text of Strabo on LacusCurtius
As always, I am retyping the text rather than scanning it: not only to minimize errors prior to proofing, but as an opportunity for me to become intimately familiar with the work, an exercise which I heartily recommend. (Well-meaning attempts to get me to scan text, if successful, would merely turn me into some kind of machine: gambit declined.) I run a first proofing pass immediately after entering each book, so that the text of all the books is quite good already . After that, a final proofing: in the table of contents below, books whose text I believe to be completely errorfree are shown on blue backgrounds at Perseus

What do the place where people chose to live and the way in which they structure their society around it say about those people? In this lesson students will explore how geographical features, both physical and cultural, of a place can give us insights into the lives of the people who have settled there, with Egypt as the primary example. Students will use maps to examine the design and location of ancient Egypt's tombs and pyramids. They will examine cultural and geographic evidence as clues for understanding the structure and placement of these historical landmarks. They will then explore the implications of caring for these structures in the future. Connections to the Curriculum: Geography, world history, anthropology, architecture
