Geography
Introduction
The Arab Republic of Egypt occupies the northeast corner of Africa, lying within the great Sahara Desert. It is bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the south by the Republic of Sudan, on the west by Libya, and on the east by Israel, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Red Sea. This geographical position has made Egypt a hub of world trade since ancient times. Egypt has a total area of 1 million square kilometers (386,100 square miles) of land—almost twice the size of Spain. Barren deserts occupy more than 90 percent of the country. The Nile separates the dunes of the Western Desert from the mountainous Eastern Desert. These two deserts, the Nile Valley, and the Sinai Peninsula make up Egypt's four geographic areas.

    INTRODUCTION TO EGYPT
Read me before you begin!!! The Nile River has been the focus of life in Egypt since the start of the Egyptian civilization, over 5000 years ago. If you sailed down the river, you would see fertile and nutrient-rich strips of land on both sides of your boat. However, beyond the narrow strips of fertile land is the desert which is sparsely populated with people. Egypt's population is completely dependent on the river.
Yearly events in Egypt were influenced by the Nile River.
    • Farmers decide on the crops to grow based on the times of the year that the river floods. Farmers built levees to control flood water and sent it to canals for the irrigation of their fields. When farmers could not grow crops , they moved into Egyptian cities where they would work together, with other citizens, to build monuments for their gods and pharaoh. This extra work allowed the Egyptian citizens to earn an income year-round no matter what their specialized job was.

    The geography of Egypt
    through the eyes of Herodotus
There were land routes to Egypt, but they were difficult and dangerous leading through desert regions under the control of nomadic tribes. A seasoned traveller chose to reach Egypt by sea. And this was exactly what Herodotus was: the tourist par excellence . And like any tourist he kept his eyes open for the unusual and his writings reflect this attitude. In Egypt practically everything was strange and marvellous. He may be forgiven for being taken in at times by tall stories or for misunderstanding what he was told. The Nile had seven major arms in those days, the three principal ones being the Water of Pre (Pelusiac branch), the Water of Ptah (Sebennytic branch), and the Water of Amen (Canopic branch). Their exact courses are unknown, but the major cities grew alongside these waterways. Naukratis, built and inhabited by Ionians and reached through the westernmost, the Canobic mouth, was one of the main gateways for

Egypt Yesterday and Today The World of the Pharaohs: A Complete Guide to Ancient Egypt by Christine Hobson, 1998, Thames and Hudson, New York. The author, who has obviously kept abreast of the most recent discoveries in Egyptology, provides an excellent synthesis and explanation of the world of the pharaohs through the archaeological discoveries that slowly revealed a civilization that lasted three-fifths of the recorded history of the Western world. The special emphasis in the introductory chapters on the early explorers and travelers and later the pioneer archaeologists who help to unravel the mysteries of Egypt make for exciting and informative reading. The book is lavishly illustrated with cutaway drawings of the pyramids and temples together with maps, site plans and color photographs of art objects to form a collection of 184 illustrations (65 in color). A primer to the hieroglyphic alphabet is included as well as a gazetteer designed as a tourist guide.
