by Barnes Hauptfuhrer In about 3000 BC settlements began to appear in small groups around the Nile River and a small fertile area around the Nile that we now call the Nile River Valley. These settlements were found almost nowhere else in Northern Africa at this period in time because the surrounding dry deserts lacked the necessities for permanent settlements such as water and fertile soil. The Nile provided both of these things for the Ancient Egyptians, and without it, permanent settlements would have been almost impossible. The water of the Nile River provided a few things that were important to the growth of civilization in Ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egyptians needed water, as all humans do, to support life. Water from the Nile also attracted thirsty animals such as the water buffalo and camels (Conde, Egyptian Animals). Water also was necessary for the growth of agriculture, the major economic activity of Ancient Egyptians. As you can see, the water of the Nile provided many uses for the Ancient Egyptians. Along with water and fertile soil, the Nile River also provided transportation for the Egyptians and enabled them to interact with other civilizations along the Nile such as the kingdom of Kush. This transportation would become important to the Ancient Egyptians in the New Kingdom when the civilization would spread along the Nile (More Info. On New Kingdom at

The Amarna Letters
(Late Bronze Age, 14th century BCE)
after the Amarna Revolution
To the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life... your slave and dust under your feet. At the feet of the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, I bowed down seven times seven times. I heard the words of the tablets of the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, and the heat of your slave and the dust under the feet of the King, my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, is exceeding glad that the breath of the King my lord, my sun, my god has gone out to his slave and to the dust under his feet.
Who is your servant but a dog? and they prostrate themselves before the Pharaoh Seven times and seven times on both back and belly.
The tablets
In 1887 about 350 clay tablets were found at el Amarna, the site of Akhenaten's capital Akhetaten. Most of these are now in European Museums (200 in Berlin, 80 in the British Museum and twenty at Oxford). They are written in cuneiform characters in the diplomatic language of the day, Akkadian. Most of the letters are dated to the reigns of Amenhotep III (1402-1364) and Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV, 1350-1334).

Hosni: Grand Egyptian museum biggest cultural project in 21st century
Egypt, Local, 6/24/2005 Culture Minister Farouk Hosni said the Grand Egyptian Museum, to be built at the Pyramid9 area in Giza governorate, is the biggest cultural project of the 21st century.
At a press conference held at the museum's site, Hosni said the first stage of the project has already started, adding that most of the world organisations concerned have contributed to it.
The press conference was attended by a delegation of the Japanese government, the international designing team, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Zahi Hawas, director of the project Mohammed Ghoneim and Secretary of the project's technical committee Yasser Mensour.
Hosni said the museum will house the biggest collection of artifacts. He added that the Egyptian and Japanese sides are about to agree on all details on the financing of the project.
After an agreement is reached, an international tender for building the museum's main building will be announced, he said. The Japanese government has initially agreed on allocating a US$ 40 million grant and a US$ 275 million loan to contribute to the project.

A large tomb-chapel of the New Kingdom has been found. The rings bearing the names of Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesenamun, and other numerous finds indicate that the site was one of the major cemetery in the period of the late 18th Dynasty to the early 19th Dynasty. Recently a large granite sarcophagus was found in the innermost substructure of the tomb-chapel, and inscribed name "Mes" on the lid has been found. Three shaft tombs located around the tomb-chapel were excavated in Spring 1999 in order to clarify the character of this cemetery. The latest site plan has been available. The substructures of the tombs are shown by VRML.

Introduction
The Natural History Museum has hired our class to be art historians and create a replica of the living art exhibit of Ancient Egypt in Cairo. The exhibit will be displayed at the annual folk life festival on the Mall in Washington D.C. Your job is to select a variety of artistic forms that the ancient Egyptians would have participated in such as music, art, theater, and dance then recreate them for your exhibit.
Task
You will be working with three or four art historians to create a living art exhibit of Ancient Egypt. Each historian will be an expert in one of the following artistic forms: art, music, dance, and theatre. The historians will select four pieces from each area to display. When the exhibit opens each artistic form will be demonstrated and recreated by the artists. As art historians, it will also be your job to provide written documentation on the historical significance of each of the artistic forms practiced in Ancient Egypt.
Process
  • Select a group of three or four art historians.

An exhibition featuring photographs of the dismantling and re-erection of the temples of Abu Simbel held in the Egyptian Museum last month reminds Jill Kamil of the debate fuelled during the UNESCO salvage operations Click to view caption Nubian rendition of Ramses II in the temple at Gerf Hussein; map of Nubia; pyramids of kings and queens of Kush at Gabal Barkal; the incense burner with Pharaonic motifs found in Nubia; part of a letter written by a homesick Egyptian in Nubia to his son at Thebes An exhibition featuring photographs of the dismantling and re-erection of the temples of Abu Simbel held in the Egyptian Museum last month reminds Jill Kamil of the debate fuelled during the UNESCO salvage operations Today we remember the dramatic dismantling, transportation and reconstruction of the great temples of Nubia, now tourist attractions at their relocated sites at home and abroad. We tend to forget the specialised studies carried out by international experts who worked there between 1958 and 1971, when the High Dam was completed, that cast light on Nubia's many cultures. So many blanks in the history of the region were filled in during those years that more is known about the indigenous cultures of Nubia than many archaeological zones in the world, even in Egypt. I recall the debate initiated on the relationship between Africa and Ancient Egypt when the Oriental Institute of Chicago's mission at Qustul made an unusual discovery. An incense burner was found in Nubia that dated to the dawn of history, 3100 BC or even earlier, and which caused great curiosity because of its engraving. It showed a seated ruler wearing what appeared to be the White Crown of Upper Egypt, a palace portal, and hawk-motifs that were later to become symbols of Pharaonic rule in Egypt. Some scholars saw this as proof that a pre-dynastic object had made its way from Egypt to Nubia, others as evidence that the kingship ideal originated in Nubia. The discovery, anyway, along with studies of various cemeteries in Nubia, modified future attitudes towards cultural heritage and, on the long run, gave rise to an Afrocentric outlook.
