T he arts are as important in modern Egypt as they were in ancient times. Egypt has produced many great writers, of whom Naguib Mahfouz is one of the most famous. Mahfouz wrote some 40 novels and short story collections, as well as 30 screenplays and several plays. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988 - the first Arab writer to be so honoured. M usic has a long tradition in Egypt. Popular Egyptian music includes folk music of the country, traditional Arabic music, and Western-style music. The country’s most famous singer is Omm Kulthum. Her voice has been celebrated in Egypt and other Arabic-speaking countries for over 50 years. F ilm making is also important in modern Egypt, dating back to the period before World War I. Today modern Egyptian films are shown all over the Arab world, which make the Egyptian dialect the most popular among the Arabic speaking countries.

Egyptian Clothing The Ancient Egyptian Empire was a very fascinating era in history. It began in approximately 3000 B.C. and lasted until 300 B.C. (Ancient Egypt: A History of Art and Culture). Artifacts found from Egypt revealed how the empire was run and most importantly, the clothing fashions of the era.
Culture and fashion was a reflection of the status of the Ancient Egyptian Empire. For instance, royalty, such as pharaohs, preferred to wear a lot of jewelry made out of gold. Their abundance of the metal revealed they prospered and showed they had an efficient economy. Also, silk fabric found in tombs of priests showed archaeologists Mediterranean trading between Egypt and other cultures did, in fact, occur. (Ancient Egypt: Clothing) In addition, Ancient Egyptian clothing can be broken down by the caste system. The way one dressed revealed one’s status in society. For instance, different ranks in Ancient Egypt include royalty, such as the pharaoh, high priests and nobles, priests, engineer, doctors, scribes, craftsmen, soldiers, farmers, and tomb builders. (Ancient Egyptian Social Life) Though fashion stayed consistent throughout the era of Ancient Egypt, it can be broken down into the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. (Cultural Timeline of Ancient Egypt)

    Ancient Egypt
    (3500 - 1000 B.C)
The history of Ancient Egypt, long more than 3000 years, is divided into 8 or 9 periods, sometimes called Kingdoms. The Ancient Egyptians themselves rather seem to have developed the notion of dynasties throughout their history. It developed along the river Nile, in Eastern Africa.

North and south Egypt is united under King Menes, Narmer or possibly Aha. Early Dynastic / Archaic Period 3150-2686 BCE. 0- 2nd Dynasty. This period of some 400 years was the formative period for the Egyptian civilization. There were great advances in the fields of writing, painting and architecture. Death cult was developed and sophisticated, where royals used mastabas and surrounding complexes for their tombs. The unification of Egypt was not completed through the period, and regional tensions persisted. It was first with King Khasekhemwy that the unification was completed and identities of the two Egypts reconciled. Old Kingdom 2686- 2181 BCE. 3rd- 6th Dynasty.

Aspects of Life in Ancient Egypt
One of the most astonishing facts about Egypt is how little everyday life changed over the millennia. The rhythm of Egyptian life was the rhythm of the Nile until a few years ago, when the Aswan dam was erected. Even today one can find the ancient shadoof, oxen pulling ploughs and houses made of mud bricks.
The gods are gone, so are the pharaohs, the language and the writing. The cities look European in a ramshackle sort of way, transportation is partly 20th century, there's some industry, and radio and television are everywhere. But villages in the farther off corners of the country must still look very much like those of thousands of years ago.
    Concerning these pages
I mostly chose topics not widely dealt with on the web. For the time being I do not include anything about pyramids or royal tombs for instance, as plenty of material can be found on these subjects.
Descriptions generally refer to the period of the New Kingdom.

Egypt is home to one of the richest and most ancient civilizationsin the world, extending to several millennia BCE. For centuries, this civilization continued to be a source of enlightenment to the whole world. The remains of its wonders still marvel students of Egyptology and history as well as tourists that come to watch it from all over the world.
Egypt has always been at the heart of successive and innovative human, social and cultural interaction. This interaction has made an important contribution to the making of Egypt's history, society and culture. Indeed one of the most salient characters of contemporary Egyptian society and culture is the multiplicity of its historical experiences and the diversity of its cultural ingredients
ANCIENT EGYPT The history of ancient Egypt extends over the period from 3100 BCE to 322 BCE. This period can be divided into 30 dynasties (30 ruling families) which can, in turn, be grouped into four main groups, the old kingdom, middle kingdom, new kingdom and the late period. This extended history saw the repetition of cycles of long periods of prosperity and great achievements followed by periods of stagnation and deterioration with short incidence of foreign rule.

    http://www.embassy-avenue.jp/egypt/cultu.htm
HIGHLIGHTS OF MODERN EGYPTIAN CULTURE Modern society and culture in Egypt is a mixture of the layers of history. Perhaps one of the major themes of modern Egyptian culture is the reconciliation between those different layers of history and their heritage in the context of the current socio-economic and political conditions. Gamal Hamdan (died in 1993 ) is a truly "encyclopedic scholar" of the twentieth century. His works combine genius-geography, history, psychology, economics and politics. They also reflect a clear literary talent. Among his most prominent books are: The Character of Egypt Studies of the Arab World and The Contemporary Islamic World Geography . Despite the fact that time separates the three books, yet, they form a harmonious trilogy and they are unified by a comprehensive view. They provide deep insight into Egypt's natural, economic, political and cultural character and of its position in the surrounding regional environment.
Taha Hussein who was born in a lower middle-class rural family and who lost his eye sight at a very early age, which caused him great anguish throughout his life, was among the first to join the, then, newly founded secular university in 1908. He was the first graduate of this university to receive a Ph.D. with his thesis on the skeptic poet and philosopher Abu-Alalaa' AI-Ma'arri. He was sent to study in France on the university's educational mission, and was, again, the first Egyptian, and the only member of the mission, to succeed in obtaining first his BA., from Montpellier University, and then his Ph.D. from the Sorbonne on Ibn Khaldoun the fourteenth century Arab thinker.
