Somewhere around 1375 years before the birth of Christ , an Egyptian pharaoh publicly changed his name. That change signalled a return to long-standing tradition, a hallmark of Egyptian culture that flourished for more than three thousand years peacefully in the rich Nile River valley. The king had been called Tutankhaton. The last portion of his name, aton , was the name for the sun-god, which, in the years before the king's reign, had achieved preeminence among the competing deities in Egyptian religious tradition. The king changed his name to the one by which he is known today TUTANKHAMEN or, more popularly, King Tut and ended the brief experiment in monotheism in favor of the older religion with its promise of an afterlife.
And what an afterlife the pharaoh would have! Embalmed in order to endure the elements of disintegration, richly attired to attest to his fabulous earthly wealth, magnificently housed to remind all on-lookers of the towering greatness of the entombed human the pharaoh lived on in perpetual association with the stone structures that rose portentously out of the hot, barren sands of the desert so close to the life-giving, greening Nile. And the solemn bearing of these great structures reminds people today of the human hope for immortality and the way an entire culture fashioned a collective immortality in astonishing stone. Here was a culture that would persist, just as its pharaohs would live on in their silent palaces.

The International Safeguarding Campaign of the Monuments of Nubia - Egypt The safeguarding of the Nubian temples and monuments, which come to us from a civilization dating back several thousands years is a proof of the merits of international solidarity. Almost submerged at the time of the construction of the first Aswan dam (1910), and threatened with total disappearance by the construction of the high dam in 1960, these monuments would not have been saved without the concerted action of the states world-wide and without the imagination, achievement and patient work of many specialists and technicians. Ancient Egypt - Culture
by Kari Phippen
The ancient Egyptians were a religious people. Two of the earliest religious cults were sun and nature. As an agricultural society, they depended upon the cyclical nature of the Nile floods to replenish the lands with fertile topsoil and they depended upon the sun to help produce a bountiful harvest. Witnessing the natural processes of the earth likely influenced their beliefs in the afterlife.
Kamil explains,
Such religious beliefs pervaded society. Egyptians often buried their dead on the West bank of the Nile River presumably due to their belief that the underworld was located in the west where the sun died each day. Relatives of the dead often buried miniature boats in their tombs to transport the soul in the afterlife. Like many other tomb artifacts, these were often marked with symbols of the sun God Re.

organization
The pictograms, hieroglyphics, murals and contents found in such edifices reveals a great deal about daily life in ancient Egypt. They offer answers to the question of why construction of these monuments was undertaken in the first place and give evidence of the effect they had on the life of the common man. The symbolism of the tomb paintings carried spiritual meaning. Through pictograms, murals on tomb walls we also know that their religious beliefs had a fundamental effect in shaping the organization and structure of Egyptian society.
Scholars argue that the first written language arose out of the need to keep records of harvests and rainfall. Historians believe that as few as one percent of the populace were literate. Scribes held a special position in Egyptian society and were revered as powerful and important people. The occupation required mastery of over 700 hieroglyphs representing objects, ideas, or sounds. Their education involved the study of reading, writing, and mathematics. Scribes functioned as tax collectors, record keepers, even architects. Scholars further suggest advances in astrology arose out of their need to predict the annual flood.

49. Sinai - The Bedouin
Basic explanation of Bedouin history, culture, and current status in the Middle East.
http://www.interknowledge.com/egypt/sinai/bedouin.htm
Bedu , the Arabic word from which the name bedouin is derived, is a simple, straightforward tag. It means "inhabitant of the desert," and refers generally to the desert-dwelling nomads of Arabia, the Negev, and the Sinai. For most people, however, the word "bedouin" conjures up a much richer and more evocative imageof lyrical, shifting sands, flowing robes, and the long, loping strides of camels. For several centuries, such images were not far from the truth. In the vast, arid expanses of the Sinai, as in the Negev and the deserts of Arabia, the many tribes of the bedouin journeyed by camel from oasis to oasis, following a traditional way of life and maintaining a pastoral culture of exceptional grace, honor, and beauty. Most of the bedouin tribes of the Sinai are descended from peoples who migrated from the Arabian peninsula between the 14th and 18th centuries, making the bedouin themselves relatively recent arrivals in this ancient land. Today, many of the bedouin of the Sinai have traded their traditional existence for the pursuits and the conventions of the modern world, as startling changes over the last two decades have irrevocably altered the nature of life for the bedouin and for the land they inhabit. Nonetheless, bedouin culture still survives in the Sinai, where there is a growing appreciation of its value and its fragility.

The interim display includes some of the artefacts and themes which will feature in the new galleries, spanning a period from 2500BC to the 7 th century AD.

Living in ancient Egypt
This last section includes artefacts demonstrating the Egyptians' attitude to their landscape and to their gods, and some domestic material such as furniture and jewellery which provides what little evidence we have for the ancient Egyptian's experience of life. The display as a whole forms the orientation galley to introduce the Roxie Walker Galleries of Egyptian Funerary Archaeology. The display also features several popular star pieces that were previously on display in the recently remodelled Central Saloon of the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery, including the famous

Hieroglyphs and the Written Record
Written language is part of the cultural code, which is as subtle and as complex as any code for writing secret messages. Texts themselves are artefacts as much as any other ancient object, and need to be understood as such, rather than being simply translated word for word. Hieroglyphs record the ancient Egyptian language, using a mixed system of sound and picture signs. The Egyptian language evolved over 3000 years, as Egyptian society changed. Like any language, written Egyptian was different from spoken Egyptian, and changed more slowly. Different forms of the language and styles of script were used for different purposes. In the Christian Period, Egyptian began to be written in a version of the Greek alphabet called Coptic. Reading hieroglyphs
