Prehistoric Egyptian tomb discovered
CAIRO, Egypt - Archaeologists digging in a 5,600-year-old funeral site in southern Egypt unearthed seven corpses believed to date to the era, as well as an intact figure of a cow's head carved from flint.
" The American-Egyptian excavation team made the discoveries in what they described as the largest funerary complex ever found that dates to the elusive five-millennia-old Predynastic era, Egypt's Supreme Council of antiquities said Wednesday. "This is a major discovery, and will add greatly to our knowledge of the period when Egypt was first becoming a nation," said Zahi Hawass, Egypt's Chief archaeologist. In the area of Kom El-Ahmar, known in antiquity as Hierakonpolis, 370 miles (600 miles) south of Cairo, the team working for five years in the area excavated a complex thought to belong to a ruler of the ancient city who reigned around 3600 B.C. The find is significant because little is known about the early phase of Predynastic period. That era predates the unification of upper and lower Egypt that triggered the well-known Dynastic era, when ancient Egypt's pharaohs ruled. " Full story: MSN Associated Press

Egyptian sea vessel artifacts discovered at pharaonic port of Mersa Gawasis along Red Sea coast
Discovery includes steering oars, other evidence of Egypt's sea-faring past
(Boston) When Kathryn Bard reached through the small hole that opened in a hillside along Egypt's Red Sea coast, her hand touched nearly 4,000 years of history. The opening that Bard, an associate professor of archaeology at Boston University, and her team's co-leader Rodolfo Fattovich, a professor of archaeology at Italy's University of Naples "L'Orientale," discovered was the entrance to a large, man-made cave. Two days later at a site about 30 meters beyond this cave, the team removed sand covering the entrance to a second cave, one that held the well-preserved cedar timbers of an ancient Egyptian sea-faring vessel. The timbers, together with limestone block-anchors, curved cedar steering oars, rigging ropes, and other items, are from ancient Egyptian ships. In addition to the nautical items in the second cave, and the two antechambers discovered to branch from it, the archaeologists found limestone tablets with hieroglyphic inscriptions that detail long-ago trade expeditions to the Red Sea region known as Punt. Bard and Fattovich will present their findings on the two caves and discuss the promise their discoveries hold to fellow archaeologists on April 23 during the 56th annual meeting of the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) in Cambridge, Mass.

By Suzanne Trimel Columbia will launch an archaeological fieldwork and research program in January 2002 in a desert region of southern Egypt that has a rich past in the development of early Christian sects, inland agricultural economies and urbanism. Construction of a small student residence hall and research center begins this fall. Bagnall said the Columbia program will be based on the archaeological site of Amheida, part of a region studied by the long-established Dakhleh Oasis Project. Amheida was settled in the third millennium BCE and occupied through the fifth century. Trimithis during the Roman period, the site was the location of a Roman military camp and includes many buildings visible above the surface of the sand, said Bagnall. The project highlights a renewed interest in archaeology at Columbia, which has appointed three new faculty members in the field and will open a Center for Archeology. Following six weeks of field work and instruction in Dakhleh, students will travel for two weeks to sites and museums throughout Egypt, ranging from Aswan to Alexandria. Several more weeks will be spent in Cairo or Alexandria preparing major independent projects.
