Location: North Carolina Length: 37 min.
An abandoned wooden house deep in the woods leads an archaeologist/film-maker on a journey into the history of a family. Created as part of an archaeological project, this literally haunting story dramatizes a personal exploration of the history and folklore of an abandoned farming community in the Piedmont of North Carolina. The area was alternately occupied and abandoned from the 1700s to the 1900s. This film includes a ghostly encounter and features interviews with descendants of the original Euro-American inhabitants of the community. View Now:

ScienceWeek ARCHEOLOGY: ON EGYPTIAN ANIMAL MUMMIES
The following points are made by S.A. Buckley et al (Nature 2004 431:294):
1) Millions of votive mummies of mammals, birds, and reptiles were produced throughout ancient Egypt, with their popularity increasing during the reign of Amenhotep III (1400 BC) and thereafter. The scale of production has been taken to indicate that relatively little care and expense was involved in their preparation compared with human mummies(1-3). The accepted view is that animals were merely wrapped in coarse linen bandages and/or dipped in "resin" before death(2-4). However, as with human mummification, there was a range of qualities of treatments, and visual inspection of animal mummies suggests that the procedures used were often as complex as those used in humans (for example, evisceration and elaborate bandaging). Moreover, the ancient Egyptians treated animals with great respect, regarding them both as domestic pets and representatives of the gods; for example, the cat symbolized the goddess Bastet; the hawk, Horus; the ibis, Thoth, and so on.
2) One essential aspect of the mummification process was the treatment of the corpse and associated viscera with various organic embalming agents. Previous reports have shown that a variety of natural products possessing a range of preservative properties were applied during mummification, including beeswax, animal fats and plant oils, plant resins, petroleum bitumen, and essential oils. Thus, a further criterion on which to assess the degree of care and sophistication employed in the mummification of animal mummies would be to determine the chemical composition of their balms. The specimens investigated by the authors are representatives of the latest mummy-making era of Pharaonic Egypt (XXIII dynasty (818-715 BC) to the XXX dynasty (380-343 BC)).

T housands of tombs were dug here, ranging from huge underground complexes in the Valley of Kings to less elaborate tombs in the Valley of the Queens. This well-designed site features a photo documentary of a balloon trip over the site, showing some of the most impressive monuments an structures.

Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa
Press Release
Africa's diverse and sophisticated Nubian civilization, circa 3100 BC to AD 400, is the subject of a major exhibition, Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa , to open September 29, 1995, at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology , at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor . Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa will run through December 15, 1995. Only a handful of American museums have significant Nubian collections. As a consequence, the exhibition's traveling schedule was booked immediately with a waiting list of more than 20 museums. The Kelsey Museum's Associate Curator of Collections, Prof. Thelma K. Thomas, was one of the very first to reserve one of the exhibitions traveling slots. In 1991, while plans were still being laid, she recognized that Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa promised to be an extremely important exhibition for this generation of museum-goers and scholars interested in the history of Africa. Salvage projects necessitated by the construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s saved a number of Nubian monuments from destruction by inundation and enhanced our knowledge of ancient Nubia tremendously. It was not until 1978, in a joint project organized by The Brooklyn Museum and the Loewey Museum of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley, that a major exhibition presented this aspect of African history to the public. Public response was overwhelming then. Meanwhile the numbers of interested parties has grown exponentially. Grass-roots reading groups were organized in African-American communities in response to the dearth of presentations of just this type of information.
