THE GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA
Location: http://pharos.bu.edu/Egypt/Wonders/pyramid.html I would only recommend this document if anyone is looking for a specific example of a pyramid. It tells very little about the Egyptian culture in general, but it does make reference to the fact that we do not know how the Egyptians constructed the pyramids. It also describes the pyramid in detail. Once in this document, one is also able to observe other items from Egyptian culture such as a tomb or a piece of art. Julie Burke

AUDIO GREETING
The civilization of Ancient Egypt managed to thrive for over 3,000 years in an arid and desolate portion of Africa. Although probably best known for their architectural and artistic achievements, there is much more to this complex and innovative people. The Web provides a wonderful opportunity for those who wish to learn more about this culture. These links, as well as those below, will lead you to the land of the Pharaohs. Here you will be able to visit the Great Pyramid Complex at Giza , learn about the ancient ritual of Mummification, trace the Time Line of the Great Pharaohs Re construct an Ancient Mummy Reading List for those books which I feel are essential to the amateur Egyptologist. Then follow the independant links below to other web sites, or if you like try out the Yahoo! search system provided and do some digging of your own.

About the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology
The Institute's collection of antiquities resides in the Art Museum of The University of Memphis. Over 150 objects range in date from 3500 B.C.E. to 700 C.E. There are mummies, religious and funerary items, jewelry, and objects from everyday life.
Visible in the image to the left are Iret-iruw's body and coffin lid. These artifacts are described in the Artifacts exhibit. The objects most easily seen in the image to the right are (from left to right in the foreground): model boat, block statue of Nedjem, and an Old Kingdom couple. The model boat dates from the Middle Kingdom when replicas in miniature complemented the paintings on the walls of tombs. The Egyptians believed that the models and paintings could be magically revived and be of use to the tomb owner in the next world. The block statue of Nedjem is highlighted in the Artifacts exhibit. Statuette of Nedjemu
Date: Old Kingdom, Dynasty V (c. 2500-2350 B.C.E.) Material: Limestone Provenance: Giza Nedjemu ("sweet one") illustrates several aspects of Egyptian funerary sculpture which remained typical for almost 3000 years. His body indicates the use of the canon of proportion within an eighteen-square grid. His rigid posture and the quiet expression on his face reflect the Egyptian desire to represent the deceased in a manner appropriate for eternity. Nedjemu wears a wrap-around kilt which would have been made of unbleached linen, a product of flax. (Cotton textiles in Egypt date no earlier than the third century B.C.E.) He holds two small pegs in his hands, probably abbreviated scepters as symbols of public office. His wig would have been made of human hair if he could afford it. However, cheaper wigs of sheep or goat hair were also available. Traces of reddish-brown paint on his legs illustrate the skin color associated most frequently with men. The left foot strides forward, the traditional pose for male statues. This stance suggests movement and strength. This little statuette was probably a quick, "off-the-shelf" purchase after Nedjemu's death. Some lightly inscribed hieroglyphs on the base tell us that it was acquired for Nedjemu's tomb by his son.

http://carlos.emory.edu/ODYSSEY/EGYPT/arch.html
Why is King Tut So Famous? Archaeology! The tomb of King Tutankhamen is one of the most famous because of its well-known discovery by Howard Carter, a British archaeologist. Carter excavated in the Valley of the Kings for eleven years before he discovered Tut's tomb in 1922. Tutankhamen wasn't an especially important king, but his tomb was the only royal burial found intact in modern times. The tomb was important because it let archaeologists record what an Egyptian king's tomb looked like and learn more about ancient Egypt. One of King Tutankhamen's Nobles is now in Rochester, New York! This relief depicts Maya, an important official during the reign of three pharaohs: Tutankhamen, Ay, and Horemhab. He supervised the preparation of the tombs of these pharaohs, collected taxes for them, and performed other tasks to serve the king. The Memorial Art Gallery bought this carving in 1942. It originally decorated the inside wall of Maya's tomb in Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient city of Memphis, southwest of Cairo. How did it get to Rochester? Here Today, Gone Tomorrow....The Discovery of Maya's Tomb.

*NEW BOOK *
THE NUBIAN PAST
' - by David N Edwards
ARCHAEOLOGY IN SUDAN The home of the earliest kingdoms and civilisations south of the Sahara, the rich archaeological heritage of Sudan and Nubia still remains little known. In a vast country, archaeological work is still thinly spread and under-resourced. Archaeologists are only at the very beginning of the study of the first great kingdom of Sudan at Kerma (c.2500-1500 BCE), the Kushite/Meroitic Empire (c.800 BCE-350 CE), the prosperous medieval Nubian kingdoms and the great Sultanates of Funj Sennar and Darfur of the post-medieval period. Unfortunately very little archaeological work has ever been carried out in southern Sudan so, as yet, we know very little of its early past. While the name 'Nubia' is commonly associated with the areas of the far north of Sudan, and southern Egypt, medieval Nubia (the land of the 'Nuba'/'Noba') was a much greater region, extending far to the south of Khartoum - while the family of Nubian languages seems to have been widespread across much of what is now west, central and northern Sudan. It has become traditional to refer to all the ancient inhabitants of this region as 'Nubian', although that name is of relatively recent origin, first appearing in historical texts during the mid-first millennium BCE.
