169. The UnMuseum - Experiment: Make A Mummy
Illustrated step by step instructions for drying out a slice of apple using the same process used to preserve the dead in ancient egypt.
http://www.unmuseum.org/exmum.htm
Experiment: Make a Fruit Mummy The ancient Egyptians preserved human bodies after death by making them into mummies . A body is mummified by removing most of the moisture from it so that it is difficult for bacteria to thrive inside it and cause decay. The Egyptians did this by covering the body with natron. Natron is a naturally-occurring desiccant . A desiccant removes water from material with which it comes into contact. You can make a mummy out of a slice of fruit by covering it with a desiccant and letting it draw the water out. You will be using a mixture of baking soda and salt as the desiccant. These are some of the substances in natron. STEP 1: You will need a small apple, a knife, a box of baking soda, a box of table salt, two disposable plastic drinking cups and a measuring cup. STEP 2: Cut the apple in two, then slice one of the halves in half again. You can discard the half (eat it if you want) and put each of the remaining quarters into one of the two plastic cups. If you have a sensitive scale, weigh one of the cups and write the weight down. STEP 3: Fill the measuring cup with baking soda up to 1/3 mark. Then add salt until the cup is filled up to the 2/3s mark. Mix the salt and baking soda together in the cup.

http://www.culturefocus.com/egypt_pyramids.htm
HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt PYRAMIDS OF GIZA The mysterious Pyramids The Pyramids of Giza are the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt. These massive stone structures were built around 4500 years ago on a rocky desert plateau close to the Nile. But the intriguing Egyptian pyramids were more than just tombs for kings. The mysteries surrounding their symbolism, design and purpose have inspired passionate debate. It is likely that many of these mysteries will never be solved... The rise and fall of the pyramid era The pyramids epitomize ancient Egypt, yet the biggest were constructed during a short span of time early in a civilization that was to last almost three millennia. The first large Egyptian pyramid was the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, built during the third dynasty of the Old Kingdom to protect the body of the king Djoser who died around 2649 BC. It was this feat that heralded the short age of the gigantic stone pyramids of ancient Egypt. The first large pyramid in Egypt was the Step Pyramid of Djoser. It was built at Saqqara, about 15 kilometers from Giza.

176. EAWC Essay: The Egyptian Culture Reflected In Worship
Essay by Deborah Howard at Exploring ancient World Cultures which traces the relationship between egyptian worship rituals and the culture of ancient egypt.

Exploring Ancient World Cultures
Essays on Ancient Egypt
The Egyptian Culture Reflected in Worship
Deborah Howard Much of our knowledge about ancient Egyptian culture is based on elaborate worship rituals related to death and the afterlife. Egyptians were devoted to their gods and to their pharaohs who were gods on earth, as demonstrated by their willingness to build the pyramids for the safe passage of their leaders into the afterlife.
Understanding the development of Egyptian society and their theological system requires a basic knowledge of the geography of the area. The Nile River Valley and Nile Delta, circa 4000-5000 BCE, was comprised of about 12,000 square miles of arable land. The villages and towns of ancient Egypt were found up and down the length of the Nile with most of the population living below the First Cataract (located approximately at present day Aswan).
The Egyptians were accomplished farmers. They knew the Nile would flood each year and bring new life and abundant grain. The Nile's flooding was predictable and left rich new deposits of silt for new crops, making irrigation easy to plan. A basin irrigation system allowed the flood waters to flow gently into each field, cleansing and renewing the earth each year.
The virtual isolation of the Nile Valley allowed Egyptian civilization to develop unthreatened by its neighbors. The Mediterranean Sea lay to the north, vast deserts were found to the east and west, and dense jungle lay to the south. An invader would have to be quite determined to brave the elements that protected the Nile Valley civilization.

Why Study Ancient World Cultures?
An Essay by Bill Hemminger The question that initiates this program is a broad one: Why study ancient cultures? You might feel that the question is moot: students do study and will study ancient cultures; such study is an expected part of a tradition of intellectual development. The response to the why of the initial question is a matter of tradition, if not fact. A study of the ROMAN EMPIRE a reading of Greek philosophy and literature, a look at the PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT these are all accepted parts of a Western education, aren't they? Probably so: even today, in the plurality of approaches to the study of history and to the study of cultures, people talk about PLATO or DANTE or Krishna or Mohammed. But there is an important proviso: How you approach ancient cultures (or any other culture, for that matter) and how you conceive of the people of such distant worlds are of paramount importance. At this point, you might ask yourself these two additional questions: Do we study these cultures because, to some extent, all cultures share certain characteristics? Does our own culture reflect aspects of these other cultures? The answer to the first of the two questions has historically been found in a discussion of universality. Consider, for a moment, the case of Arjuna in

180. Egyptian Gods
Discover the gods and goddesses of ancient egypt. Learn all about Ra the sun god and his children Isis, Osiris, Seth and Nefertem.
http://users.bigpond.net.au/bstone/egyptian_gods.htm
The Deities of Egypt Atum is all, self generating and source of everything, he is the sun god and king of all - Ra, he is Atum-Ra. Pre-existing within himself is the masculine life - Ankh and the feminine justice and truth - Ma'at. By spit or masturbation he brought forth dry air, the breath, Shu and his sister wife moisture, Tefnet. From them came the earth Geb and the sky, his sister wife Nut. Due to Ra's displeasure at their continual coupling, Geb and Nut were separated by Shu. From the earth and sky come Osiris, Isis, Nefertem and Seth. After a rebellion Ra withdrew to the heavens. Osiris became king of the world but, by the jealousy of Seth, he is murdered and scattered across Egypt. His sister wife Isis gathered the pieces and resurrected him long enough to bear a child - Horus. Osiris withdrew to be king of the underworld and Horus battled with Seth, and now Horus becomes King of the world and Kingship itself. He is Ra-Horakhty. He gives Kingship and the Pharaoh IS the son of Ra. Creation has many stories.
