Ancient Records of Egypt
Translated and Edited by James Henry Breasted
Introduction and Supplementary Bibliographies by Peter A. Piccione Around the turn of the last century, James Henry Breasted took on the challenge of assembling all the available historical documents of ancient Egypt and translating them into English. This prodigious undertaking involved traveling to the monuments extant in the Nile valley and in outlying areas of Egyptian conquest, as well as to museums throughout Europe where Egyptian relics were housed. Breasted made his own copies of hundreds of Egyptian records inscribed on papyrus or leather or carved in stone and engaged in a thorough study of the published records of Egyptian history in conjunction with his own transcription of the documents themselves. This five-volume compendium is the result. Breasted's commentary is both rigorously documented and accessible, suffused with a contagious fascination for the events, the personalities, the cultural practices, and the sophistication these records indicate. A herculean assemblage of primary documents, many of which have deteriorated to illegibility in the intervening century, Ancient Records of Egypt illuminates both the incredible complexity of Egyptian society and the almost insuperable difficulties of reconstructing a lost civilization.

Welcome to our Ancient History Projects on the Web
Graphic based on a lithograph "Side View of the Great Sphinx,
Pyramids of Geezeh" by David Roberts Introduction: Grade Five and Six students from The International School of Amsterdam have worked on several investigative projects in 1996-97 and 1997-98. In Spring 1997 grade six students spent a month studying Ancient Egypt . They worked in pairs or in threes studying different aspects: the geography, the history, religion, the social structure and daily life and technology. Following the Egyptian project, students chose another civilization they wanted to learn more about. The choices included the Romans Greeks Celts Vikings ... Incas , Aztecs, Chinese , Etruscans, Maoris , and North American Indians. The groups then made a presentation to their classmates using multi-media authoring tools and in August 1997 a number of their projects were added to our Grade 6 Social Studies Web Site with links to other Internet resources and related school projects.

Tools and artifacts indicate that humans lived in the Nile valley about 250,000 years ago, an era known as the Pre-dynastic Period. Archaeological findings point to the emergence of a dominant political and religious culture in the Nile valley by about 3300 BC, when King Menes, created Egypt by uniting the two parts of Egypt, also known as Upper and Lower Egypt, into a single kingdom. He made Memphis in the north and Abydos in the south as his capital cities, this important event marked the beginning of the dynastic period of the Pharaohs.
Historians divide Egyptian civilization into four Periods, the Old, Middle, New, and the Late Kingdoms. These eras are separated from each another by, respectively, the First, Second, and Third Intermediate periods. During these times the political divisions of Middle and Upper Egypt broke apart under the influence of weak rulers, fragmenting the central government and disrupting the administrative authority of the country.
Persian invaders occupied Egypt in the sixth century BC until 332 BC, when invasion by the forces of Alexander the Great brought an end to Persian rule. After his death, Ptolemy took Egypt and in 306 BC declared himself pharaoh, establishing Egypt's last dynasty. Ptolemaic Egypt was one of the great powers of the Hellenistic world, at various times extending its rule over parts of Syria, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Libya and Phoenicia. Alexandria became the cultural and intellectual center of the ancient world. The Ptolemaic line ended with the suicide of Cleopatra in 30 BC.

Pharonic History (Part 1)
When most people think of Egyptian history they think of the pyramids, mummies and the pharaohs. But there is so much more to the story of Egypt's past. Egypt has a longer written history than any other nation. The next two weeks we will briefly survey the history of Egypt from the dawn of civilization to present. Our first section will survey the history of Egypt from approximately 3100 BC to 30 BC, or from Pharaonic times to the decline of Greek rule in Egypt. The earliest stages of Egyptian history can be divided into seven stages. An Egyptian priest named Manetho wrote a history of Egypt dividing her past through Greek rule into 31 Dynasties. We will try to organize those dynasties into the various stages of ancient Egyptian history, mentioning the more significant rulers. The earliest period is known as the Archaic or Early Dynastic Period (3100-2686 BC). This consists of Dynasties 1 and 2. Most of the rulers and events in this time are somewhat shadowy. We learn of a certain ruler named Narmer, who unified Upper and Lower Egypt. This is commemorated on a monumental dedication palette. Manetho tells us that Narmer was killed by a hippopotamus! Dynasties 3 through 6 are known as the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 BC). The Old Kingdom is also known as the Pyramid Age, because it is the time when many of the great pyramids were built including the ones on the Giza Plateau. The earliest pyramid was a Step Pyramid or ziggurat, built in Saqqara for Djoser. The pyramid was designed by the king's leading advisor, a man named Imhotep. King Snefru had a pyramid constructed in Dasshur with a curious change of pitch toward the top. This is known as the Bent Pyramid.

Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

Ancient History of Palestine
Palestine Palestine - the land of the Prophets. Rich in history - the history of generations of believers who lived and worshipped, and fought and died there, praising their Lord and defending their faith.
Historic region, the extent of which has varied greatly since ancient times, situated on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in south west Asia .
The Land The region has an extremely diverse terrain that falls generally into four parallel zones. From west to east they are the coastal plain ; the hills and mountains of Galilee, Samaria, and Judea; the valley of the Jordan river.; and the east plateau. In the extreme south lies the Negev , a rugged desert area . Elevations range from 395 mile (1296 ft) below sea level on the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the surface of the earth, to 1020 mile (3347 ft) atop nearby Mt. Hebron .
The region has several fertile areas , which constitute its principal natural resource . The water supply of the region, however , is not abundant , with virtually all of the modest annual rainfall coming in the winter months . The Jordan Rever, the region's only major stream, flows south through Lake Tiberias (the regions only large freshwater lake) to the intensely saline Dead Sea.

Breif modern history of Palestine

3'RD MILLENNIUM BC 3'rd millennium BC : The Canaanites were the earliest known inhabitants of Palestine. They became urbanized and lived in city-states, one of which was Jericho . They developed an alphabet. Palestine's location at the center of routes linking three continents made it the meeting place for religious and cultural influences from Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Asia Minor. It was also the natural battleground for the great powers of the region and subject to domination by adjacent empires, beginning with Egypt in the 3d millennium BC.
