A word of caution
This site is based on what is considered more or less orthodox chronology, which of course means that there are other, deviant chronologies. On the whole I prefer the plodding examination of facts however few and poorly understood to the flights of fancy of some of the alternative historians. Chances are it gets us a bit closer to the truth, which, unless timetravel is invented, we will never know.
One would like to think that physical remains should leave little to doubt. But stone artefacts and buildings are remarkably difficult to date [ ]. Theories - from the sublime to the ridiculous - of when, how, why and by whom the Great Pyramids, for instance, have been erected, are legion.

History of Egypt series. Ancient Egypt Greek and Roman Egypt Early Arab Egypt Ottoman Egypt ... Hathor The history of Egypt is the longest continuous history, as a unified state, of any country in the world. The Nile valley forms a natural geographic and economic unit, bounded to the east and west by deserts, to the north by the sea and to the south by the Cataracts of the Nile. The need to have a single authority to manage the waters of the Nile led to the creation of the world's first state in Egypt in about 3000 BC . Egypt's peculiar geography made it a difficult country to attack, which is why Pharaonic Egypt was for so long an independent and self-contained state. Once Egypt did succumb to foreign rule; however, it proved unable to escape from it, and for 2,300 years Egypt was governed by foreigners: Persians Greeks Romans Byzantines ... Turks and British . When Gamal Abdel Nasser President of Egypt 1954–1970) remarked that he was the first native Egyptian to exercise sovereign power in the country since Pharaoh Nectanebo II , deposed by the Persians in 343 BC , he was only exaggerating slightly.

Welcome to Life in Ancient Egypt, an introduction to The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Carnegie Museum of Natural History has acquired Egyptian artifacts since its founding and now holds about twenty-five-hundred ancient Egyptian artifacts. The most significant of these objects, over six hundred of them, are displayed in The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt. In the hall the artifacts are displayed in relation to the daily life and traditions of the people who made them, so that the objects are seen in the context of the culture. To present a cohesive picture of ancient Egyptian society, its technology, its social system, and its beliefs, we have arranged the objects in several thematic areas. Life in Ancient Egypt, however, presents the themes in a slightly different order than the hall. You may choose from the links to the left or follow the suggested path by clicking the Next button on each screen. We hope you have the opportunity to come to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and visit The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt.

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt ANCIENT THEBES Temples for gods and kings Present day Luxor in Egypt is built on the Nile at the site of ancient Thebes, a city that reached its glory under New Kingdom pharaohs. It was in Thebes that the imposing temples of Karnak and Luxor were built over three thousand years ago to honor the great god Amun. Successive pharaohs endeavored to outdo their predecessors by enlarging and embellishing these cult centers. By doing this they hoped to please the gods and enhance their own status. Over the years, the Karnak and Luxor temples grew ever more magnificent... Houses of the gods
Egyptian cult temples like those at Karnak and Luxor were dedicated to gods who were served there by the pharaoh and his priests. In return, the gods gave life and order to the land of Egypt. The pharaoh of ancient Egypt was more than a head of state, he was looked upon as a divine link between the gods and his people.
The principal builders in ancient Thebes included the New Kingdom pharaohs Tuthmosis III and Amenhotep III of dynasty 18, and Ramesses II of dynasty 19. Ramesses II, known as Ramesses the Great, was a prolific builder enamoured of colossal statues of himself.

The Neolithic of the Levant (500 Page Book Online) Egyptian History CHRONOLOGY (Petrie Museum) [University College London] Pre-History Some 60000 years ago the Nile River began its yearly inundation of the land along its banks leaving behind rich alluvial soil. Areas close to the floodplain became attractive as a source of food and water. In time climatic changes, including periods of aridity, further served to confine human habitation to the Nile Valley although this was not always true. From the Chalcolithic period (the Copper Age : beginning about 4000 BC) into the early part of the Old Kingdom people apparently used an extended part of the land. In the 7th millennium BC Egypt was environmentally hospitable and evidence of settlements from that time has been found in the low desert areas of southern or Upper Egypt; remains of similar occupation have been discovered at Nubian sites in modern Sudan. Enough pottery has been found in Upper Egyptian tombs from the 4th millennium BC (in the Pre-Dynastic period) to establish a relative dating sequence. The Pre-Dynastic Period which ends with the unification of Egypt under one king is generally subdivided into three parts, each of which refers to the site at which its archaeological materials were found:
