EFFECTIVE TEACHING IN LARGE CLASSES Richard M. Felder

Phil Wankat wrote somewhereand I agreethat anything you can do in a large class you can do better in a small one. When we find ourselves teaching a mob, it's easy to throw up our hands, conclude that there's no chance of getting any responsiveness out of 150 or 300 students in an auditorium, and spend 45 hours showing transparencies to the listless 60% who bother to show up from day to day. We can generate some interest by bringing demonstrations to class, but there are only so many hydrogen balloons we can explode and even they lose their impact after a while.
Fortunately, there are ways to make large classes almost as effective as their smaller counterparts. Without turning yourself inside out, you can get students actively involved, help them develop a sense of community, and give frequent homework assignments without killing yourself (or your teaching assistants) with impossible grading loads. Following are some ideas for doing all that.
In-Class Exercises
Lectures as a rule have little educational value. People learn by doing, not by watching and listening. If you're teaching a small class and you're good, you may be able to prod many of your students into activityget them asking and answering questions, discussing issues, challenging conclusions, laughing at your jokes, whatever. No matter how good you are, though, you probably won't be able to persuade most students to open their mouths in front of 120 classmatesit feels too risky for them. If you hope to move away from the wax museum-like aspect of most large lectures, you'll have to try a different approach.

RESOURCES IN SCIENCE AND
ENGINEERING EDUCATION
College teaching may be the only skilled profession for which no preparation or training is provided or required. You get a Ph.D., join a faculty, they show you your office, and then tell you "By the way, you're teaching 205 next semester. See you later." The result is the consistent use of teaching techniques that have repeatedly been shown to be ineffective at promoting learning. Many professors are surprised to learn that...
  • There are well-defined instructional techniques that make teaching more effective.
  • These techniques can be introduced slowly and methodically, without compromising coverage of the syllabus. They do not require large expenditures of money, time, and effort.
  • Most importantly, the techniques have been validated by careful, documented, repeatable research. Their effectiveness is not simply a matter of opinion. They work!
This Web site offers guidance on what those techniques are and tips and resources for using them. If you have a specific aspect of teaching in mind, click on the link to "Education-related papers" on the left and then click on your topic if it is listed. Otherwise, just enjoy browsing.

Second, the book puts into writing much of the "folklore" about starting a research program as told by experienced professors, information which is normally communicated by mouth."

Chapter 13: EFFECTIVE LEARNING AND TEACHING
Although Science for All Americans emphasizes what students should learn, it also recognizes that how science is taught is equally important. In planning instruction, effective teachers draw on a growing body of research knowledge about the nature of learning and on craft knowledge about teaching that has stood the test of time. Typically, they consider the special characteristics of the material to be learned, the background of their students, and the conditions under which the teaching and learning are to take place.
P RINCIPLES OF L EARNING
Learning Is Not Necessarily an Outcome of Teaching Cognitive research is revealing that even with what is taken to be good instruction, many students, including academically talented ones, understand less than we think they do. With determination, students taking an examination are commonly able to identify what they have been told or what they have read; careful probing, however, often shows that their understanding is limited or distorted, if not altogether wrong. This finding suggests that parsimony is essential in setting out educational goals: Schools should pick the most important concepts and skills to emphasize so that they can concentrate on the quality of understanding rather than on the quantity of information presented.

EFFECTIVE TEACHING TECHNIQUES
FOR DISTANCE LEARNING What makes an effective and rewarding distance learning experience for both the students and the faculty, an experience that would be described as one of quality? How do the components of distance teaching and learning experiences fit together to become an educational whole? These questions underlie a continually growing body of educational research. For example, the Faculty Initiative of the AT&T Foundation funded Innovations in Distance Education Project (1995) developed a faculty-determined "Emerging Set of Guiding Principles and Practices", a set of principles and practices that provide a philosophical foundation for the design and development of quality distance educational programs. You might find our abstract of the principles and practices a good starting point for this unit. And this paper, " Seven Principles of Good Teaching Practice ", which speaks about both the regular classroom and distance education, is interesting reading. Quality is not well defined in higher education. But, according to one researcher

Effective Teaching Strategies
The Western Center for Drug-Free Schools and Communities, Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (1991) suggests that role playing, Socratic instruction, and small group work are effective teaching strategies for curriculum infusion.
    "The Role Playing Process:
  • Make sure the students define a situation that is relevant and important to themfor example, a situation in which they may be offered a drug. Get details such as the setting and number and types of people involved.
  • Set the stage by arranging furniture, indicating where 'doors' might be located.
  • Prepare the audience by giving them specific questions to be prepared to answer at the conclusion of the role play. Examples: (a) Would this work in real life? (b) How would you have handled the situation?
  • There are numerous ways to select participants. Discuss ideas.
  • Begin the role play, stopping it if it is unrealistic, going nowhere, or has accomplished its purpose.
  • Ask questions of the participants and audience.
  • Reenact the role play, if necessary, using a variation of the situation, new participants, feedback provided to improve a skill. . .

http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/envrnmnt/drugfree/sa3const.htm
Constructivist Teaching and Learning Models
Constructivism is an approach to teaching and learning based on the premise that cognition (learning) is the result of "mental construction." In other words, students learn by fitting new information together with what they already know. Constructivists believe that learning is affected by the context in which an idea is taught as well as by students' beliefs and attitudes. Constructivist teaching is based on recent research about the human brain and what is known about how learning occurs. Caine and Caine (1991) suggest that brain-compatible teaching is based on 12 principles:
  • "The brain is a parallel processor" (p. 80). It simultaneously processes many different types of information, including thoughts, emotions, and cultural knowledge. Effective teaching employs a variety of learning strategies.
  • "Learning engages the entire physiology" (p. 80). Teachers can't address just the intellect.
  • "The search for meaning is innate" (p. 81). Effective teaching recognizes that meaning is personal and unique, and that students' understandings are based on their own unique experiences.
  • "The search for meaning occurs through 'patterning' " (p. 81). Effective teaching connects isolated ideas and information with global concepts and themes.

For over 100 years, distance education has served as an alternative method for delivering academic course work to students unable to attend traditional campus-based classes. The format of distance education varies from correspondence-style courses to technologically based courses using the Internet. Distance education offers students considerable benefits, including increased access to learning, lifelong learning opportunities, and convenience of time and place (St. Pierre, 1998). Distance education may be essential for learners who are truly place-bound because of factors such as employment, child-care demands, disability, or remoteness of the location where they live (Rintala, 1998). This digest presents information on the many forms distance education can take and keys to successful teaching with distance education.

Using Newspapers as Effective Teaching Tools. ERIC Digest Number 10.
Use of the mass media as a teaching instrument in the classroom has increased considerably at all grade levels in the past few years. The Journal of Reading carries a regular series"Use the News"on integrating the reading of newspapers into classroom activities. The newspaper is the most widely used of the media, the direct result of a national campaign by publishers, known as "Newspapers in Education" (NIE). This initiative encourages the use of newspapers as an educational tool both to complement and supplement traditional classroom texts and resource materials (Newton, 1985). "The Newspaper as an Effective Teaching Tool" (1981) explains the intent of the program and provides a variety of classroom activities using newspapers. At the present time, about 600 newspapers in the United States and Canada participate in the NIE program, which involves approximately three million students, 90,000 teachers, and 16,000 schools each year. Before the advent of NIE, newspapers tended to be used only by secondary school social studies teachers in two-week units or for Friday current events sessions. Now, however, newspapers are used throughout the school year in every area of the curriculum (Kossack, 1987).

Very slowly pull it back through the hole so that you can make a second ear. Pull the ears apart to make a knot. Great job! You've tied your own shoes for the first time!" Did you learn to tie your shoes in this or a similar manner? You probably didn't learn to tie your shoes from a book, since you probably couldn't read. You also didn't learn how to tie your shoes following a graph or a table. Yet, you mastered this skill and immediately applied it to your daily life because it was important to you. Learning by doing is how children learn. But learning by doing is not just a child's thing. Many adults learn the same way. Did you learn how to operate a computer by listening to a lecture? Probably not. You needed to touch it and "make it work" yourself.
