INTRODUCTION
In this document, I review some techniques that teachers might use to improve their classroom teaching. The techniques are drawn primarily from empirical research on university teaching and are organized around the clusters measured by UofW's Quality of University Instruction Questionnaire (UW-QUIQ). The UW-QUIQ is used to evaluate instruction in all regular classes and is presented in Appendix 1 Although the techniques described apply to many types of university teaching, effective instruction cannot be defined in any absolute way. University teaching involves diverse modes of instruction, including: lectures, seminars, labs, and mentoring (e.g., thesis supervision). Disciplines, courses, and instructors also vary widely in their emphasis on such varied educational objectives as learning new knowledge, stimulating student interest, developing cognitive skills, and leading students to question established tenets. One important distinction in determining effective teaching may be the relative importance of cognitive and affective goals. That is, some qualities of teaching may be more strongly related to such cognitive objectives as developing knowledge and skills, whereas other qualities are more strongly related to such affective objectives as fostering student interest and curiosity.

The Teaching Principle
Effective mathematics teaching requires understanding what students know and need to learn and then challenging and supporting them to learn it well. Students learn mathematics through the experiences that teachers provide. Teachers must know and understand deeply the mathematics they are teaching and understand and be committed to their students as learners of mathematics and as human beings. There is no one "right way" to teach. Nevertheless, much is known about effective mathematics teaching. Selecting and using suitable curricular materials, using appropriate instructional tools and techniques to support learning, and pursuing continuous self-improvement are actions good teachers take every day. The teacher is responsible for creating an intellectual environment in the classroom where serious engagement in mathematical thinking is the norm. Effective teaching requires deciding what aspects of a task to highlight, how to organize and orchestrate the work of students, what questions to ask students having varied levels of expertise, and how to support students without taking over the process of thinking for them. Effective teaching requires continuing efforts to learn and improve. Teachers need to increase their knowledge about mathematics and pedagogy, learn from their students and colleagues, and engage in professional development and self-reflection. Collaborating with otherspairing an experienced teacher with a new teacher or forming a community of teachersto observe, analyze, and discuss teaching and students' thinking is a powerful, yet neglected, form of professional development.

Intervention Techniques
Flash: Read our blog, TeachEffectively Here's a place where you can find effective teaching techniques . Students studying special education at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education and East Tennessee State University College of Education have read and summarized scores of research articles about teaching techniques for exceptional learners. To be included in this data base, the articles had to describe research-validated methods for teaching specific skills to individuals with disabilities. The contributions are edited for quality (content and clarity), use of contemporary terminology, and people-first language on an on-going basis (i.e., this site is always "under construction" for new additions and improvements). We suggest that you browse the topics of interest to you and follow up your own research by acquiring articles of interest in their full-length versions. You can find articles at libraries or through web sites like UnCover that should be able to send most of the articles contained in this database (for a fee). Table of Contents These links take you to entries for each of the areas shown. The articles that are summarized address a range of ages, grade levels, and categories of exceptionality that taken together may provide you with some helpful suggestions. Each entry is based on the results of one study reported in journals relevant to special education. For each item you will find information about (a) the targeted skill or behavior addressed by the research, (b) with whom the technique was studied, (c) a description of the teaching procedure, (d) a description of how the technique was evaluated, (e) the citation so that you can obtain the full document, and (f) the names and university affiliations of the people who created the entries.
