A Compact for Reading is a written agreement among families, teachers, principals, and students to work together to help improve the reading skills of kindergarten through third grade children. Our publications, A Compact for Reading Guide and the School-Home Links Reading Kit , are designed to help Compact partners set reading goals, and provide lessons and activities that allow children to accomplish these goals. The Compact for Reading Guide offers tips on creating community and family-school partnerships with the purpose of improving children's reading. The School-Home Links Reading Kits are a collection of research-based activities designed to help families reinforce the reading and language arts skills that their children are learning at school. The kits are organized to assist children in the following grade levels: Kindergarten

Educational Programs That Work - 1995
Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery. A supplementary, one-to-one intervention program for the least able readers in the first grade to help them acquire and use fundamental reading and comprehension skills. Audience The least able readers in first grade as determined by a comprehensive battery of individually administered diagnostic instruments. Description Evidence of Effectiveness First grade children improved their reading and writing ability after an average of 16.4 weeks, with 86% of the children reaching average levels of achievement for their class in reading. Replications across several thousand sites verify the consistency of the results. Growth in reading and writing is evidenced by statistically significant scores relative to an equivalent control group using a variety of writing and reading test elements. In addition, follow-up studies indicate that the majority of children released from the program continue to make progress and read with the average of their class through the second, third, and fourth grades without additional help. Requirements For effective implementation, school systems should release one or two experienced individuals to attend a one year teacher-leader training program at a designated university. They will learn procedures for implementation, evaluation, and administration of the Reading Recovery program.

Welcome
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research ( BER ) has established the Global Change Education Program (GCEP) to promote undergraduate and graduate training in support of the Department's global change research activities. Global change research encompasses a wide variety of study areas, including atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climatology, and terrestrial processes. Global change research is supported by BER through the Atmospheric Science Program ( ASP ), the Environmental Meteorology Program (EMP), the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement ( ARM ) Program, the Terrestrial Carbon Processes ( TCP ) effort, the Program for Ecosystem Research ( PER ), and studies carried out under the direction of the National Institute for Global Environmental Change ( NIGEC ). Other studies address integrated assessments, predictions, and policy, as well as paleoclimatology and earth system processes. The two components of GCEP are the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience ( SURE ) and the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships ( GREF ). A major goal of GCEP is to involve undergraduate students at the end of their sophomore or junior year in BER-supported global change research, then continue this experience during subsequent undergraduate summers. SURE is designed to support individual undergraduate students during multiple years. To further improve the quality of emerging scientists in disciplines related to global change research, SURE students will be encouraged to apply for GREF graduate fellowships and postdoctoral study programs.
