Background:
Advanced indigenous cultures flourished in Ecuador long before the area was conquered by the Inca empire in the 15th century. In 1534, the Spanish arrived and defeated the Inca armies.
The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999.

History and Government
History: In the following century, as the Department of the South, it joined New Grenada and Venezuela to form the Federation of Gran Colombia. Spanish rule lasted until the early 19th century – after suppressing several rebellions, the Spaniards were finally overthrown in 1822, by a force backed by Simon Bolivar, fresh from victory in Colombia. Soon afterwards, in 1828, the country declared war on Peru, whose armies had invaded Gran Colombia. A year later, a peace treaty was signed and Ecuador’s boundaries were permanently established. However, relations between Ecuador and Peru have been tense ever since. In 1830, Ecuador seceded from Gran Colombia and declared independence. Almost immediately, the rivalry between Quito and Guayaquil emerged, initially over trade and then over support for rival political organisations. This rivalry, between secular and religious interests, or between landowners and the merchant/banking classes, inevitably distilled to a conflict between the two cities. In the early 1920s, the army entered the political fray, claiming that only it could sustain national unity. The period between 1925 and 1948, when the military finally conceded that they did not have a legitimate political role, was one of the most turbulent in the country’s history, with continual changes of government, along with economic and administrative chaos. The inter-city rivalry persisted as before. After 1948, civilian administrations predominated, with power alternating between Liberals (from the Costa) and Conservatives (from the Sierra). The discovery of oil and the sharp increase in world oil prices in the late and mid 70s should have transformed Ecuador’s economic fortunes. However, the windfall was largely squandered and Ecuador has suffered persistent economic difficulties ever since.

Ecuador - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Ecuador is a tiny country in South America. While there isn't much known about Ecuador's earliest history, what is known is fascinating. It is a history full of conflict, struggle, and triumph. And it all happened among some of the most beautiful geography on the planet.
While written Ecuadorian history goes back only to the 11th century AD, it is believed that people have been living in Ecuador for many thousands of years. Scientists believe that nomads traveled from Asia to South America around 12,000 BC. A nomad is a person who spends his or her life traveling. If you look at a map, you'll see that those nomads had a long way to travel to get from Asia to South America! More travelers from Polynesia, a group of islands in the Pacific, arrived later. These people formed different tribes. For thousands of years, they fought and made up over and over again.
Around 1450 AD, Incas moved to the country. People of Ecuador fought against the Incas, but ultimately lost. The Incas ruled the region for less than 100 years. The Incas lost out to the Spanish, who arrived in Ecuador in 1526.

I divided Ecuador's history in 4 major eras
Aboriginal Era
30000 BC - 1532 AD)
comprises the time, when the continent got populated and before the arrival of the Spaniards. Many small Indian cultures were spread out throughout the country with commerce happening between the coastal Indians to the Highland Indians and into the Amazon. Agriculture was the mainstay of many but they also knew the use of pottery and metalwork. Beginning before 1500 conquest and influence by the Inca Empire, mostly felt in the Andes region.
Spanish Colony

In 1531 Spaniards, who were already established in Mexico and the Caribbean Islands, landed from Panama by boat on an South American shore. After defeating the Inca Empire and subjugating the native population, the Spanish crown established their rule over the continent with help of Spanish colonists and the Catholic church. Quito was an important cultural and administrative center in the colonial times.
Independence ( Forces for the independence of Spanish America from the mother country, led by Simon Bolivar and Mariscal Sucre defeated the loyalists and established independent republics as known today throughout the continent. Governments frequently changed from elected presidents to military dictatorships and back.

http://countrystudies.us/ecuador/3.htm
History
Ecuador Table of Contents THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, Ecuador has displayed a continuity in traditional cultural and economic patterns as well as in social and political interaction among the country's highly heterogeneous social groupings. Modern patterns overlay the traditional, making present-day Ecuador a veritable living museum of its varied, rich heritage. Pre-Columbian Ecuador is reflected in the persistence of native languages, customs, and economic activities among a considerable, though diminishing, number of communities in the Sierra (Andean highlands) and the Oriente (eastern region). The legacy of three centuries of Spanish colonial rule is also pervasive and includes a social inequality that largely coincides with race, rural land tenure patterns, and the nation's dominant European cultural expressions. Analysts of Ecuador's postindependence political history have pointed to a number of persistent ingredients. Regionalism is especially prominent, particularly as expressed in the struggle for power between the Sierra, represented by Quito, and the Costa (coastal region), represented by Guayaquil. Regionalism has coincided with the party struggle between the Quito-based Conservatives and the Guayaquil-based Liberals. Personalism, from the political prominence of military caudillos in the early years of the republic to the civilian dictators and the populists of more recent times, has been another persistent theme since independence.

Pre Colombian History
For 12,000 years Ecuador has been home to various civilizations. Early cultures celebrated the history of their forefathers through songs, dances, and story telling. Oral history was an important part of religious ceremonies. Little of this history remains today. The Spanish forcefully converted the indigenous culture to Catholicism, religious ceremonies were abandoned and many of the stories forgotten. The tales that endured are of the Inca's who arrived in Ecuador shortly before the Spanish. Information about earlier cultures is attributed to the archeological treasures discovered throughout the country. Ecuador is a young country archeologically speaking, the importance of unearthing and preserving ruins does not have the enthusiastic support of the country and scientists as in Mexico, Peru, Egypt or Turkey. Many of the country's ruins remain buried, left simply as a mysterious symbol of an earlier culture. One can only imagine what has left to be discovered. Opportunities to learn about Pre-Colombian cultures include the well-preserved ruins in Machalilla and Ingapirca or visiting one of the excellent museums housing a collections of art work and tools.

History of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands
Ecuador's history is rich and colorful, spanning some 12,000 year of human civilization from early tribal settlers to grand empires and kingdoms, Inca lords and Spanish conquistadors, legends of gold and treachery, colonization and rebellion, and finally democracy and independence. Yet the human history of the Galapagos Islands is relatively recent, dating back a few centuries when wayward ships and pirates found food and shelter in the islands. Later, whalers and colonists made their homes along the shores. The famed naturalist Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835 and his five week stay had a profound affect on his thinking. His theory of evolution rocked the scientific world when it was published in 1859 in the text of his book, The Origins of Species . The Galapagos were declared a National Park in 1967 and a marine sanctuary was established in 1998. To learn more click on the links below:

The first known culture of Ecuador is the Las Vegas , a group of hunters and gathers who lived on the Santa Elena Peninsula between the Guayas Basin and Salinas. Living in houses and making textiles they enjoyed a varied economy and they existed by farming crops including maize and squash, hunting, and exploiting the mangroves for wood, oysters and other seafood. The museum "Museo de los Amantes de Sumpa" near Santa Elena houses displays of the Las Vegas and tells the story of their culture.

History Ecuador was populated by a rich variety of groups and cultures, that became eclipsed by the Incas around 1450 AD. The first Spaniards landed in 1526 and in 1533 the Inca leader Atahualpa was captured and killed by Pizarro, bringing the Inca Empire to an end. The conquistador Francisco de Orellana set off to look for gold in the east and discovered the Amazon instead. The Spanish rule dominated for 280 years, bringing Christianity and a feudal system that left the Indians permanently in debt to their landlords. Huge rural estates were created owned by a few families. Opposition to Spanish rule grew among the elite. Eventually Antonio Sucre defeated the royalists in 1822. Ecuador become part of Colombia led by Simón Bolívar. Full constitutional independence was reached in 1830. There followed a history of internal disputes with many changes of regime from dictators, juntas and recently democracy. Despite this colourful past and border conflicts with Peru (now resolved) Ecuador is relatively peaceful. The government is modelled on the American system of Congress with Senators and a President elected every four years. Economic stability was reached through the “dollarization scheme” in the year 2000, when Ecuador abandoned its own currency to switch to the US dollar.
