This page provides a summary of the key events and dates throughout the history of Ecuador. It's a good primer, but presents highlights only. Topics include:
Early History The Inca Empire The Spanish Conquest Colonization ... The 20th Century Early History
Common archeological wisdom has it that South America's first inhabitants arrived in South America about 14,000 years ago, after their ancestors came across what we now call the Bering Strait. (Recently, this view has been disputed.)
Stone-age tools dated to 9000 BC have been discovered in the Quito area. The earliest known sign of a developed culture dates to 3200 BC. Examples of these cultures can be seen in museums in Quito and Guayaquil.
Pre-Inca tribes existed, but most of their history is lost to time and legend. The earliest details, dated about 11th century AD, are of two dominant tribes: the Caras in the coastal areas and the Quitus in the sierra highlands. The ambitious Caras, led by Shyri, conquered the Quitus, although some historians believe this to have been peaceful.
The Inca Empire
The defeat of the northern tribe took many years, and Huayana Capac grew up in Ecuador. After succeeding his father to the throne, he spend many years traveling throughout his empire dealing with various uprisings. He often strengthened his position by marriages. One of them, to the daughter of the defeated Cacha Duchicela, produced a son, Atahualpa.

Pre-Colombian times and colonization
Advanced indigenous pre-Incan cultures flourished in Ecuador long before the area was conquered by the Inca Empire in the 15th century In 1531, the Spanish conquistadors under Francisco Pizarro arrived and defeated the Inca Emperor Atahualpa and his army during the Battle of Cajamarca in . In subsequent years the Spanish colonists became the new elite. The indigenous population was decimated by disease in the first decades of Spanish rule; a time when the natives also were forced into the " encomienda " labor system for Spanish landlords. In Quito became the seat of a royal audiencia (administrative district) of Spain. edit

Independence
After independence forces defeated the royalist army in 1822, Ecuador joined Sim³n Bolvar 's Republic of Gran Colombia , only to become a separate republic on May 13 . The 19th century was marked by instability, with a rapid succession of rulers. The conservative Gabriel Garca Moreno unified the country in the 1860s with the support of the Catholic Church. In the late 1800s, world demand for cocoa tied the economy to commodity exports and led to migrations from the highlands to the agricultural frontier on the coast.

Charles Darwin I Ecuador's climate is equally generous to the traveler. Embracing the Pacific, Ecuador rests squarely on the equator (hence its name). Here, seasons are defined more by rainfall than temperature. A warm rainy season lasts from January to April, and May through December is characterized by a cooler, drier period that is ideally timed for a summer trip.

In 1463 the Inca warrior Pachacuti and his son Topa Yupanqui began conquering Ecuador. By the end of 15th century, despite fierce resistance by several Ecuadorian tribes, Huayna Capac, Topa Yupanqui's son, conquered all of Ecuador. The Inca ruled the Ecuadorian Kingdoms until the arrival of Francisco Pizarro, Diego de Almargo and a force of Spanish conquistadors in 1532. During the period of Inca control, the Ecuadorian tribesmen assimilated agricultural practices and the social organization of the Inca, but they maintained their traditional religious beliefs and many customs. Ecuador's indigenous population would suffer far worse under Spanish rule than it did under the Inca.

The Inca were a dynamic, rapidly advancing society. They originated in a pocket of Peru, but established a vast empire within a century. It dominated Peru and extended as far as Bolivia and central Chile. The Inca constructed massive, monumental cities. To communicate across their empire they laid wide, stone-paved highways thousands of kilometers long and sent chains of messengers along them. These mailmen passed each other records of the empire's status, which were coded in system of knots along a rope. A winded runner could even rest in the shade of trees planted along both sides of the road. Remarkably, the Canari, Quitu, and Caras were able to hold back Tupac-Yupanqui, though they proved less successful against his son, Huayna Capac. After conquering Ecuador, Huayna Capac indoctrinated the tribes to Quechua, the language of the Incas, which is still widely spoken in Ecuador. In celebration of his victory, Huayna Capac ordered a great city to be built at Tomebamba, near Cuenca. Its size and influence rivaled the capital of Cuzco in Perua rivalry that would mature with posterity. When he died in 1526, Huayna Capac divided the empire between his two sons, Atahualpa and Huascar. Atahualpa ruled the northern reaches from Tombebamba, while Huascar held court over the south from Cuzco. The split inheritance was an unconventional and fateful move, as the first Spaniards arrived in the same year. On the eve of Pizarro's expedition into the empire, the brothers entered into a civil war for complete control.

Ecuador's coastal region and the high Andean basins were inhabited by Indian tribes when the first Europeans reached the area's Pacific coast in 1526. The Inca Empire extended over the highland region to an area near Quito. The Spanish colonists established themselves in the country in 1534, and ruled for nearly three centuries. The first uprising against Spanish rule took place in 1809.
Finally, on May 24, 1822, independence was won by the armies of Simon Bolivar, with the key battles in Ecuador lead by Antonio Jose de Sucre, one of Bolivar's field marshals. But the struggles were not over. After an unsuccessful federation with Colombia and Venezuela, Ecuador became an independent nation in 1830. During the first century of its independence, Ecuador changed its contitutions 13 times, and only few of its presidents had managed to serve a full four-year term. The economic development associated with the cocoa boom at the end of the nineteenth and the first quarter of the twentieth century helped to improve and stabilize the country's administration, despite the frequent turnover in rulers -18 presidents between 1897 and 1934, and 25 presidents between 1934 and 1988 Refounded as the colonial capital, Quito became famous in the 17th and 18th centuries as an art center. Today, the old colonial center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its beauty.
