A Complete History of Ecuador:
Ecuador offers little archeological evidence of its preHispanic civilizations. Nonetheless, its most ancient artifacts remnants of the Valdivia culture found along the coast north of the modern city of Santa Elena in Guayas Provincedate from as early as 3500 B.C.. Other major coastal archaeological sites are found in the provinces of Manabí and Esmeraldas; major sites in the Sierra are found in Carchi and Imbabura provinces in the north, Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces in the middle of the Andean highlands, and Cañar, Azuay, and Loja provinces in the south. Nearly all of these sites are dated in the last 2,000 years. Large parts of Ecuador, including almost all of the Oriente, however, remain unknown territory to archaeologists. The first European to set foot on the territory of modern-day Ecuador was probably Bartolomé Ruiz de Estrada, the pilot for Pizarro on his second voyage, who pushed southward while Pizarro explored the Colombian coast and Almargo returned to Panama for supplies. Pizarro himself landed on the Ecuadorian coast later during his exploratory voyage and traveled as far as Tumbes in the extreme north of present-day Peru, in defiance of official orders to return to Panama.

The history of Ecuador is varied and interesting due to the tremendous changes that the region has undergone during the last 500 years. Historically, Ecuador was divided into different Amerindian communities that succumbed to the Incan invasion from the south. The Incans triumphed and dominated the Ecuadorian territory for approximately 50 years. The Spanish Conquistadors, under the command of Francisco Pizarro, enslaved the victorious Incan Atahualpa and ended his reign and established a Spanish viceroy On May 24, 1822 after 200 years or more of Spanish occupation, Ecuador proclaimed its independence. In 1942, Ecuador fought with Peru and lost a large extension of its territory, especially the entrance to the Amazon river. In the 1990's, there was a second war with Peru. In 1999, the country fell into the worst economic crisis of its history and this is why the country changed to the US dollar in the year 2000. Now with a growing economy thanks to a period of oil prosperity and economic adjustments, Ecuador is trying to open itself to the world hopefully via the principles of eco-tourism and the protection of its traditional agricultural industry and not through the selling out of its citizens to unfair Free-trade agreements.

The first phase Ecuador's history began somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 BC with the rise of indigenous societies in what is now Ecuador. These peoples had developed social organizations with their own beliefs, rites, and ceremonies and an economy based primarily on hunting, gathering, and agriculture. Traces of their existence can be found in archaeological sites located all across Ecuador. This era, which can be divided into four periods (Paleo-Indian or Pre-ceramic, Formative, Regional Development, Integration, and Incan), lasted until the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores in the XVI century. History of Operations
Early History
The history of petroleum development in Ecuador dates back to 1878 when Ecuador's National Assembly decreed exclusive rights to M. G. Mier and Company for the extraction of petroleum, tar, kerosene and other bituminous substances in the Santa Elena Peninsula.
In 1937, the government of Ecuador granted Shell Oil the first oil concession in the Oriente region of the Amazon. In 1964 the government invited a Texaco subsidiary, Texaco Petroleum Company, and Gulf Oil to explore for and produce oil in that region through a partnership with the government.
Exploration in the Oriente
Central to the government's actions at that time was its desire to strengthen Ecuador's economy by developing the petroleum, fishing and agricultural sectors, and to resolve a long-standing border dispute with Peru involving the Oriente region. Development of the petroleum resources was just one of the government's ways of securing its claim in the Oriente. The government also granted land and passed laws that encouraged colonization in the region. The colonization, in turn, led to commercial development, including logging, mining and agriculture. Here, as in any developing nation, forested lands gave way to forms of land use needed to support the growing population.
During its years of operations, Texaco Petroleum consistently complied with the laws of Ecuador and international petroleum industry environmental standards. In fact, Texaco Petroleum developed a new industry standard for operating in sensitive environments, including the use of helicopters to move equipment in order to minimize the creation of roads. Other oil companies operating in the Amazon region have since adopted this practice. Texaco Petroleum also conducted an extensive remediation program at the end of the concession agreement to ensure no lasting environmental damage.

Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, Ecuador was controlled by the Inca empire. Francisco Pizarro's subordinate, , entered the area in 1533. Not finding the wealth of the mythical El Dorado, he and other conquistadors, notably Gonzalo Pizarro and Orellana , moved restlessly on and the region became a colonial backwater. (In 1942, Ecuador signed a treaty ceding a large area to Peru, but in 1960 it renounced the treaty.) Bitter internecine struggles between Conservatives and Liberals marked the political history of Ecuador in the 19th cent. The Conservatives, led by Flores and

People of Ecuador Ecuador has a diverse population composed of people of European, Native American, and African descent. The majority are mestizos, individuals of mixed European and Native American ancestry. Most of the Native Americans live in poverty in the highlands region, where a small elite of European descent controls most of the land and wealth. Flag of Ecuador The flag of Ecuador has three horizontal bands of yellow (top, double width), blue, and red with the coat of arms superimposed at the center of the flag; similar to the flag of Colombia, which is shorter and does not bear a coat of arms.

Economy of Ecuador Ecuador has substantial oil resources and rich agricultural areas. Because the country exports primary products such as oil, bananas, and shrimp, fluctuations in world market prices can have a substantial domestic impact. Ecuador joined the World Trade Organization in 1996. The Ecuador Government is presently working on strategies to increase productivity in the oil, communication and electric sectors. History
THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, Ecuador has displayed a continuity in traditional cultural and economic patterns as well as in social and political interaction among the country's highly heterogeneous social groupings. Modern patterns overlay the traditional, making present-day Ecuador a veritable living museum of its varied, rich heritage. Pre-Columbian Ecuador is reflected in the persistence of native languages, customs, and economic activities among a considerable, though diminishing, number of communities in the Sierra (Andean highlands) and the Oriente (eastern region). The legacy of three centuries of Spanish colonial rule is also pervasive and includes a social inequality that largely coincides with race, rural land tenure patterns, and the nation's dominant European cultural expressions. Analysts of Ecuador's postindependence political history have pointed to a number of persistent ingredients. Regionalism is especially prominent, particularly as expressed in the struggle for power between the Sierra, represented by Quito, and the Costa (coastal region), represented by Guayaquil. Regionalism has coincided with the party struggle between the Quito-based Conservatives and the Guayaquil-based Liberals. Personalism, from the political prominence of military caudillos in the early years of the republic to the civilian dictators and the populists of more recent times, has been another persistent theme since independence.

      History
[edit this] [Upload image] Advanced indigenous cultures flourished in Ecuador long before the area was conquered by the Inca empire in the 15th century. In 1534 the Spanish arrived and defeated the Inca armies and Spanish colonists became the new elite. The indigenous population was decimated by disease in the first decades of Spanish rulea time when the natives were also forced into the "encomienda" labor system for Spanish landlords. In 1563 Quito became the seat of a royal audiencia (administrative district) of Spain. After independence forces defeated the royalist army in 1822 Ecuador joined Simon Bolivar's Republic of Gran Colombia only to become a separate republic in 1830. The 19th century was marked by instability with a rapid succession of rulers. The conservative Gabriel Garcia Moreno unified the country in the 1860s with the support of the Catholic Church. In the late 1800s world demand for cocoa tied the economy to commodity exports and led to migrations from the highlands to the agricultural frontier on the coast. A coastal-based liberal revolution in 1895 under Eloy Alfaro reduced the power of the clergy and opened the way for capitalist development. The end of the cocoa boom produced renewed political instability and a military coup in 1925. The 1930s and 1940s were marked by populist politicians such as five-time president Jose Velasco Ibarra. In January 1942 Ecuador signed the Rio Protocol to end a brief war with Peru the year before; Ecuador agreed to a border that conceded to Peru much territory Ecuador previously had claimed in the Amazon. After World War II a recovery in the market for agricultural commodities and the growth of the banana industry helped restore prosperity and political peace. From 1948-60 three presidentsbeginning with Galo Plazawere freely elected and completed their terms.

The review was translated by Janet Groff Greever, Robert Hook and Carolyn Hook. Nature was excessively lavish in Ecuador, Eduardo Estrella tells us in this documented study. Its residents have been blessed with a great privilege, and at the same time, with a tremendous responsibility. Because of its spatial characteristics, Ecuador has been and continues to be a privileged place to live. At this point, it becomes evident that there is a conflict between development and conservation. Development, which is a process considered good for humans, only merits this name when it is sustaining; and that, in its turn, only succeeds when population (social), production (economic), and the environment are kept in equilibrium. That is to say, development succeeds only when each action taken is necessary, obligatory and simultaneously socially just, economically profitable and environmentally sustainable.

Architectural remains of ancient civilizations dating back thousands of years, and probably related to the Maya civilization of Central America, have been discovered in Ecuador. The present-day city of Quito served as the fortified capital of several Native American groups and is one of three cities in the Americas that antedate the coming of the Europeans. The other two are Mexico City, capital of the Aztec Empire, and Cuzco, Peru, capital of the Inca Empire. Quito was the center of the ancient Native American kingdom of Quito, which was conquered by the Inca Empire in the late 15th century. None of these pre-European civilizations left written records of their cultures. The Inca dominated the Native American tribes of Ecuador and provided the major military obstacles to the early Spanish invaders, who eventually conquered the region in the 16th century. deeper links
