The Valley - Awake! by Mariana Long
Ecuador
The Awakening Valley
, telling the story of a social miracle happening in Ecuador - in the valley at the foot of Tiata Imbabura . (1, cover) In 1993, forty-three years later, I set foot in that same area and discovered a valley, not awakening, but awake! My son, Matt, and I were traveling by bus, north out of Quito, on our way to Colombia. We had been advised to be in Otavalo on a weekend to experience the famous market. Little did we know that this trip would evolve into many more trips and to special relationships with the people living in this valley, high in the Andes. Ecuador, among the smallest and most unspoiled of South American nations, owes its name to its geographic location - astride the equator. (6, p. 59) The Andes divide into two parallel chains in Ecuador - the western and the eastern, which run like twin spinal columns from north to south. The valley in which most Ecuadorians live, and where most of the mountain areas agricultural produce is grown, runs for about four hundred kilometers in between. Some thirty volcanoes serve to fence in the valley from either side. The deep river valleys (hoyas) are home to agricultural communities whose way of life seems to have remained unchanged for centuries. (6, p. 64) A book written by Linda A. Newsom

ECUADOR
Introduction Epithet after epithet was found too weak to convey to those who have not visited the intertropical regions, the sensations of delight which the mind experiences.-
Charles Darwin I Ecuador's climate is equally generous to the traveler. Embracing the Pacific, Ecuador rests squarely on the equator (hence its name). Here, seasons are defined more by rainfall than temperature. A warm rainy season lasts from January to April, and May through December is characterized by a cooler, drier period that is ideally timed for a summer trip.

Ecuador - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Have you ever heard of the equator? Do you have an idea what it is? The equator is a place on earth. But it isn't a single place. The equator stretches all the way around the earth. It is an imaginary line that goes east and west. It goes around the middle of the earth.
The equator is halfway between the north and south poles. Usually, countries on or near the equator are pretty hot. There is a country named after the equator. This country is called Ecuador.
Ecuador is located in South America. Its capital city is Quito. To Ecuador's west is the Pacific Ocean. To Ecuador's north is Colombia. To Ecuador's south is Peru. Ecuador isn't a very big country. It is one of the smallest in South America. But Ecuador isn't limited to mainland South America. Some of Ecuador is far away. The Galapagos Islands, about 1,000 km away in the Pacific Ocean, belong to Ecuador. And the Galapagos are incredible. In fact, there is a giant turtle named after the Galapagos.
Many islands actually make up the Galapagos Islands, but there are just 13 main islands. About 17,000 people live there. There are also many different animals in the Galapagos. There are many animals and plants that can only be found in the Galapagos. There are also many different plants and animals in mainland Ecuador.

Ecuador also owns the famous Galapagos Islands, located approximately 1,000 kilometers off the coast. Ecuador covers 256,370 square kilometers of land and is the smallest country in South America after Uruguay and the Guianas. Geography Despite Ecuador's diminutive size - about equal to the North American state of Colorado - it is one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world. Ecuador is comprised of four distinct geographical regions: El Oriente (Amazon jungle) in the east, La Sierra (Andes mountains) in the center, La Costa (the Pacific coastal lowlands) in the west, and the majestic Galapagos Islands off the coast.

The Costa, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, consists of coastal lowlands, coastal mountains, and rolling hills that separate river valleys. The widest part of the region stretches 150 kilometers from Cabo San Lorenzo in Manabí Province to the foothills of the Andes Mountains. In the southern part of Guayas Province, east of the Gulf of Guayaquil, the narrow coastal plain is only fifteen to twenty kilometers wide. The lowlands of the Costa do not exceed 200 meters in elevation, whereas the coastal mountains extend no higher than 1,000 meters. The coastal mountain chain, known as the Cordillera Costañera, divides the region into the Costa Externa, next to the coast, and the Costa Internal, next to the Andes. The Cordillera Costañera reaches from Esmeraldas in the north to Guayaquil in the south. North of Portoviejo in Manabí Province, the Cordillera Costañera loses its character as a mountain chain and becomes a series of hills and small mountains.
