INTRODUCTION
Background: The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999. TOP OF PAGE

Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of Ecuador
Main Introduction Geography Geology Paleoclimates Climates Vegetation ... Search the Catalogue Geography By David A. Neill The name Ecuador is Spanish for equator, and the country straddles the geographic equator, from about 1°30'N to 5°S latitude; mainland Ecuador extends from about 75°20'W to 81°W longitude. An important event in the history of world geography was the 1736 geodesic expedition led by the French geographer C. M. de La Condamine, when the region was part of the Spanish Empire. La Condamine and his colleagues measured arcs of the Earth's curvature on the equator near Quito and near Pedernales on the Pacific coast; these measurements enabled the first accurate determination of the size of the Earth and led to the establishment of the international metric system of measurement. The fame brought to the region by the French geodesic expedition evidently influenced the adoption of the name, Republic of Ecuador, when the country gained independence in 1830. Centro de Levantamientos Integrados de Recursos Naturales por Sensores Remotos (CLIRSEN), operates a Landsat and SPOT satellite image receiving station near the Cotopaxi volcano, carries out geographic and natural resource studies using remote sensing data, and sells the satellite imagery to other users.

    Geography
Ecuador is one of the smaller countries in South America. Located on the west coast and straddling the equator, Ecuador has a total area of about 280,000 square kilometers, which includes the Galápagos Islands. Roughly the size of the state of Colorado, Ecuador encompasses a wide range of natural formations and climates, from the desertlike southern coast to the snowcapped peaks of the Andes Mountains to the plains of the Amazon River Basin. Ecuador is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Colombia, and on the east and south by Peru. Ecuador continues to contest the boundary with Peru, which was established by the Protocol of Peace, Friendship, and Boundaries (Rio Protocol) of 1942 and ceded to Peru a large portion of territory east of the Andes. GEOGRAPHY Natural regions is only sparsely populated. The coastal lowlands are the most populated and economically important part of Ecuador.
    http://www.ddg.com/LIS/aurelia/ecugeo1.htm
    GEOGRAPHY: Natural regions
The country consists of three distinct geographical regions: the Pacific coastal lowlands in the west, the Highlands (Andes) in the center; and the eastern lowlands (Oriente). The last, which forms nearly half of the contry's area, is only sparsely populated. The coastal lowlands are the most populated and economically important part of Ecuador.
    The Coastal Lowlands
The coastal lowlands are in general relatively flat, interspersed with low hills that spurs of the Andes. The most prominent is a line of hills reaching an altitude of approximately 750 meters (2,500 feet) that extendes to the coastal of Guayaquil. The northern part of the coastal lowlands is covered by a tropical rain forest, while in the south there is a rapid transition to the arid conditions that prevail also over the coastal region of Peru.
    The Highlands
Two pararell ranges, a southern extension of the Colombian ranges-the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central- make up the highland region. The two ranges are separated by a sucession of ten main basins that form part of a long, deep rift valley. The intense volcanic activity characteristic of this rift valley has produced the discontinuities that resulted in a series of basins. Rising alongside the basins are thirty volcanoes, many of them active, with some of the world's highest, largest, and most beatiful snow-capped volcanic cones. These include Mount Chimborazo (20,561 feet) and Cotopaxi, the world's largest active volcano.

    Ecuador's Geography
Ecuador is a very geographically varied country. It is about the same area of the US state of Nevada, or New Zealand, and a bit larger than the United Kingdom. It straddles the equator (for which it was named) on the West, Pacific Ocean, coast of South America. It borders two countries: Peru to the south and east, and Colombia to the north.
There are three geographical regions: the coastal lowlands, mountain highlands and eastern jungle lowlands. The coastal lowlands used to be heavily forested, but much of that is gone now, due to agriculture and shrimp farms.
The backbone of Ecuador is the Andean highlands down the center of the country. The highest peak is Chimborazo (6310 metres; 20,700 ft.), but the most famous is the Cotopaxi volcano, just south of Quito. Quito is the world's second highest capital behind La Paz, Bolivia, at an altitude of 2850 metres (9350 ft.). The highlands contain many different towns and markets to visit.
The jungle, or Oriente as it is called by Ecuadorians, forms the upper basin of the Amazon jungle. There are many virgin rainforest areas, and the large Amazon River tributary, Rio Napo, cuts through the jungle. Oil exploitation and increased population are threats to this once unsettled area.

It is located on the western side of South America between Peru and Colombia. Ecuador has many rivers that contribute to the floodplain of the Amazon Basin. Ecuador takes its name from the fact that it stradles the equator. Although Ecuador is a very tiny country it can take more than a full day to travel from one corner to the other by bus.
