Ecuador History and Culture
History Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro invaded Ecuador, home of the Inca empire, in 1532 and controlled it within two years. In 1822, the colonists revolted, and Ecuador gained freedom as part of Gran Colombia, eight years later, it realized sole independence as Ecuador. Culture Ecuador is a country of contrasting cultural patterns. The Native Americans of the highlands, the descendants of tribes conquered by the Inca, still play traditional Native American songs on ancient-style flutes and panpipes.

Quito, Ecuador: Volunteer and Study Abroad in the South American Andes
Ecuador spans the equator on the northwest coast of South America. With its cultural diversity and wide range of environments - the Galapagos Islands, the coastal areas of the Pacific, the Andes mountain range, and the headwaters of the Amazon - Ecuador provides an ideal location for you to live in and learn about South America, encountering directly the issues and concerns of this great southern continent that is emerging as a major force in world trade and world affairs. Quito
The International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership offers another Ecuador study abroad program in Guayaquil, on the coast, with a similar program design but requiring less proficiency in Spanish. Students interested in a broader experience of the diversity of Ecuador may wish to spend a term in Guayaquil and a term in Quito. Or for a comparison of Latin American cultures, you may spend one term in Ecuador and another in Mexico.
      Program Design
The program is designed to introduce you to all levels of Ecuadorian society. You will attend an elite university, live with a middle-class family, and serve with and among the poor. You will spend a semester or year developing your Spanish skills; studying Spanish and Ecuadorian history, culture and society at Universidad San Francisco de Quito; living with an Ecuadorian family; and serving about 20 hours a week responding to human needs in an Ecuadorian community agency. During the first few days, you are introduced to your host family and service placement, and participate in a cross-cultural orientation and university registration. In the following weeks you are made familiar with Quito and the surrounding region through orientation programs and field trips.

    SARAGURO
    PROVINCIA DE LOJA, ECUADOR
    http://www.saraguro.org actualizado / updated 3/2005
Welcome to these web pages about the indigenous Andean people known as the Saraguros, and about the places in southern Ecuador where they have traditionally lived for hundreds of years (mainly in the Andean mountain highlands) and places they have settled in the last hundred years (mainly in the tropical forests of the Zamora River in the Upper Amazon Basin). We thank the people of Saraguro, indigenous and non-indigenous, for their hospitality, their generosity and their friendship (and for their tolerance for the strange behavior for two gringos in their midst) which began in 1962 when we arrived, for the first time, in their beautiful land. We hope these pages will please them and be useful to them.
