He discovered the culture wars, then reported behind the lines
In the fall of 1974, in Kanawha County, West Virginia, Christian fundamentalists enraged at the imposition of “blasphemous” textbooks in the public schools demolished a wing of a school board building with fifteen sticks of dynamite. When the board insisted on keeping the books in the curriculum, homes were bombed and school buses shot at. “Jesus Wouldn’t Have Read Them,” read one of the slogans of a movement whose leader, a preacher, would soon face charges of conspiracy to bomb two elementary schools.
Into this whirlwind stepped Paul Cowan, a shaggy-haired, bespectacled, left-wing New York Jew, trying to make sense of why he felt sympathy for the side that was laying the dynamite.
A person of Cowan’s inclinations and background was supposed to know exactly what to think about a howling mob gathered around a crucifix-emblazoned flag and expectorating demands to burn books of the sort the reporter would want his kids to study, books with chapters by Norman Mailer and James Baldwin and test questions asking students to interpret rather than parrot what they had read. It would have been easy to record the scenes of bonfires and leave it at that; certainly that would have satisfied Cowan’s readers back in Greenwich Village. Instead, Cowan took the riskier step: wondering whether these criminals didn’t also have a point.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The culture of Ecuador is as diverse as the landscape of the country itself. The majority of the Ecuadorian population is mestizo , a mixture of both European and Amerindian ancestry, and much like their ancestry, the national culture is also a blend of these two sources, along with influences from slaves from Africa . 95% of Ecuadorians are Roman Catholic Ecuador can be split up into three parts, geographically; the Costa coast ), the Sierra mountains ) and El Oriente (the east; which includes the Galapagos islands, or Archipi©lago de Col³n as they are called in Ecuador) El Oriente is characterised by rainforest , the sierra by the snow -capped Andes , and the costa by lowlands that are highly fertile and used for agriculture

Family
Ecuadorians place great importance on the family , both nuclear and extended . Unlike in much of the West , where the elderly are often placed in care facilities geared towards people of advanced age, the elderly Ecuador will often live with their youngest son and his wife. Godparents are also far more important in Ecuador than in the West, and they are expected to provide both financial and psychological support to their godchildren, for example, Ecuadorians with marital troubles will often ask their godparents for advice.

A birdwatcher's paradise, Ecuador has more bird species per square mile than any other country in South America; a stunning 18% of the world's bird species are represented here. A great variety of birds in a number of habitats can be seen in a relatively short trip. Home to some very exotic species of flora and fauna, the Galapagos Islands west of Ecuador are a real evolutionary laboratory; it was in the Galapagos where Darwin's observations as a young man contributed to his groundbreaking theory of evolution. Here passengers cruise the islands aboard motor yachts, travelling to several islands to view the unique wildlife and fascinating lava formations. Tropical Nature Travel’s team of travel specialists has developed a wide range of itineraries that showcase the richness and diversity of Ecuador. Our sales staff is among the most knowledgeable in the travel industry and our wildlife lodges protect thousands of square miles of rainforest. Whatever your interest, budget or timetable, Tropical Nature Travel can arrange a vacation especially for you. Our most popular itineraries are listed below. School for International Training Programs (4)
The College Semester Abroad program of the School for International Training (SIT) provides a unique opportunity to experience other cultures through language study, a homestay, and cross-cultural orientation. Each participant, in consultation with the academic study director on site, plans and completes an independent study project. SIT currently offers the following semester programs which include an introduction to the geography, history, politics, economics, anthropology, religions, and arts of the country. Most also include intensive language instruction, as indicated. To undertake any of the following programs, the student must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher at the end of the term preceding the start of the program and have satisfied the program prerequisites, if any. Each program awards four Cornell course credits. The particular nature of the credit varies with each program. The program selection changes annually, so for complete and up-to-date details and program descriptions, consult the SIT web page [http://www.sit.edu/studyabroad/], or the Cornell program advisor.

ECUADOR
Introduction Epithet after epithet was found too weak to convey to those who have not visited the intertropical regions, the sensations of delight which the mind experiences.-
Charles Darwin I Ecuador's climate is equally generous to the traveler. Embracing the Pacific, Ecuador rests squarely on the equator (hence its name). Here, seasons are defined more by rainfall than temperature. A warm rainy season lasts from January to April, and May through December is characterized by a cooler, drier period that is ideally timed for a summer trip.

Ecuador's Culture
Colorful and Classical Societies

Like much of South America, Ecuadorian culture blends the influences of Spanish colonialism with the resilient traditions of pre-Columbian peoples. Although the population was heavily concentrated in the Andes highlands region a few decades ago, today it is divided about equally between that area and the coast. Migration toward cities - particularly Quito and Quayaquil - in all regions has increased the urban population to more than 50 percent. A large percentage of this population is children. Music Unites Ecuador's Society
In addition to the numerous native cultures, Ecuador is home to a Mestizo culture, and a sizable Afro-Ecuadorian culture (approximately a half-million), the descendants of African slaves who worked on coastal sugar plantations in the sixteenth century. Today's Afro-Ecuadorians are famous for their marimba music and dance festivals. Long before the Spanish conquest, and even much before the Inca civilization, the diverse native cultures of the region had rich musical traditions. Ancient flutes, trumpets, drums, and other musical artifacts have been found in tombs. Music was obviously important in the human and supernatural worlds of ancient Andean people. With the coming of the Spanish conquerors in the 16th century, accompanied by Catholic missionaries and African slaves, additional musical languages were introduced. Today, three principal racial and cultural strains - Indigenous, Spanish, and African - have evolved into distinctive musical styles. El Pasillo is slow, sad music that is played mainly with the guitar and rondin, a flute-like instrument consisting of several pipes. The El Pasacalle type of music has an upbeat rhythym and is excellent for dancing. El Yarabi is the most popular of the music from the Andes. It is very sentimental and great for listening.

The Inca were a dynamic, rapidly advancing society. They originated in a pocket of Peru, but established a vast empire within a century. It dominated Peru and extended as far as Bolivia and central Chile. The Inca constructed massive, monumental cities. To communicate across their empire they laid wide, stone-paved highways thousands of kilometers long and sent chains of messengers along them. These mailmen passed each other records of the empire's status, which were coded in system of knots along a rope. A winded runner could even rest in the shade of trees planted along both sides of the road. Remarkably, the Canari, Quitu, and Caras were able to hold back Tupac-Yupanqui, though they proved less successful against his son, Huayna Capac. After conquering Ecuador, Huayna Capac indoctrinated the tribes to Quechua, the language of the Incas, which is still widely spoken in Ecuador. In celebration of his victory, Huayna Capac ordered a great city to be built at Tomebamba, near Cuenca. Its size and influence rivaled the capital of Cuzco in Perua rivalry that would mature with posterity. When he died in 1526, Huayna Capac divided the empire between his two sons, Atahualpa and Huascar. Atahualpa ruled the northern reaches from Tombebamba, while Huascar held court over the south from Cuzco. The split inheritance was an unconventional and fateful move, as the first Spaniards arrived in the same year. On the eve of Pizarro's expedition into the empire, the brothers entered into a civil war for complete control.
