Partly as a result of this, the Liberal/Conservative stranglehold on domestic politics was broken in 1988, when the Izquierda Democratica (Democratic Left) party took over as the largest party in a coalition government. The right recovered its control during the early 1990s but, in May 1996, the presidential election was won by the Bucaram Ortiz of the Partido Roldosista Ecuatoriano (PRE). The PRE was little more than a vehicle for Bucaram, who had a reputation as a charismatic though eccentric politician. Unfortunately, he was entirely unsuited to presidential office, and his bizarre personal behavior and irresponsible attitude towards the conduct of government led Congress to impeach him in February 1997. Bucaram promptly fled into exile in Panama, although he has since returned and contested the 2002 presidential election (see below) in which he came fifth, polling a respectable 12 per cent.
Government
The constitution was approved by national referendum in 1978, taking effect in 1979. The President, elected for a term of four years, holds executive power. He is assisted by the Vice President and a Cabinet, which includes 12 Ministers and a Secretary General. Legislative power is unicameral and resides in the House of Representatives, with 69 members; there are 12 national representatives and the remainder represent the provinces.

CULTURE Amazonian frontier towns, Pacific coast fishing villages, rambling old haciendas, packed markets, and colonial cities provide the stage on which Ecuador's cultures intermingle; each striving to maintain its own identity and history while also charting a meaningful path into the future. Even outside these cultural crossroads, in a day, because of Ecuador's compactness, one can experience any number of Ecuador's distinct cultures. Eleven different peoples make up Ecuador's Indigenous population. By far the largest of these is the Andean Quichua, who number more than 2 million. In addition to the Quichua, the Otavalenos, Salasacas, and Saraguros - all modern-day couriers of the ancient tongue of the Incas - reside in the Ecuadorian Andes. The Amazon basin is equally as rich in indigenous culture as the highlands. Despite increasing pressures from the industrialized world, shamanistic traditions still thrive within the rainforest worlds of the Huaorani, Zaparo, Cofan, lowland Quichua, Siona, Secoya, Shuar, and Achuar. Modernization has not robbed Ecuador's cities and towns of their distinct local flavors largely because it is people not just historic sites that give these places their character. Otavalo, long famous for its warm, enterprising indigenous people, continues its friendly tradition in the twenty-first century. Banos, with its hot springs and agreeable climate, welcomes visitors day in and day out with unwavering smiles. And Quito, the country's political center, has developed into a cosmopolitan city while maintaining its small town candor and geniality.

Culture:
Ecuador's pre-Columbian people produce excellent pottery, painting, sculpture, and gold and silver work. The Spaniards trained indigenous artists to produce colonial religious art, which can be seen in many churches and museums. The Quito School of the 17th and 18th centuries combined these two influences, but was replaced by formalism after independence, which favoured subjects such as heroes of the revolution and members of the high society. Ecuador's colonial religious architecture is predominantly baroque, although domestic architecture tends to be simple and elegant, comprising whitewashed verandahed houses built around a central courtyard. Traditional Andean music has a distinctive haunting sound and is based on an unusual pentatonic scale. Wind and percussion instruments, including the bamboo panpipe and bamboo flutes, are used. Local crafts include fine examples of basketwork, leatherwork, woodcarving, weaving, ceramics and jewellery. The predominant religion is Roman Catholic, but there is a scattering of Methodist, Baptist and other faiths. The Indians, while outwardly Catholic, tend to blend Catholicism with their traditional beliefs. Spanish is the main language. Most highland Indians are bilingual, with Quechua being their preferred language and Spanish their second tongue. Several small lowland groups speak their own languages. English is understood in the best hotels, and in airline offices and travel agencies, but is of little use elsewhere.

In general, these are the four ethnic groups possible to find in Ecuador culture, although each has many other smaller divisions, specially when talking about the indigenous people.
Today it is still possible to localize each group within Ecuador culture, and the most impressing part is that every one has its own way of living, costumes and Cosmo vision. Ecuador culture is not only one!

Tuesday, June 28 - Friday, July 8, 2005 A select group of educators will join a special collaboration in Ecuador, South America, between the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and Heifer International . Together, we will experience Ecuadorian ecosystems from the high altiplano to the Pacific coast and learn about the animals and people who live in these places. On this eleven-day adventure, travel with educators from North Carolina and Ecuador to learn how poverty and environmental sustainability are connected and see Heifer International’s success in helping impoverished families move from poverty toward self-reliance. Join us as we travel from Quito to the highlands to cloud forests to tropical rain forests to the coast. Visit several Heifer International sites with us including projects with alpacas, orchids, coffee, and fish farming. Observe and learn about the incredible wildlife in each ecosystem. We'll even travel to Isla de la Plata off Ecuador’s west coast and look for migrating whales! Classrooms are invited to come explore with us as we prepare for, experience, and search for answers and understanding on our expedition.

http://www.eactours.com/adventures/ecuador/ecuador.htm
Imagine yourself surrounded by four towering volcanoes, witnessing the first light of day as it illuminates the glacier-covered crown of Mount Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. As the sun warms the morning, you are awed by the Andean condor as it soars over the mists of Sebretana waterfall. The cloud-draped mountain peaks form the most pristine cloud forest accessible to man and frame the sharp contrast of the Andes highlands and dense forests. As graceful rivers flow to form the beginning of the Amazon basin, search for signs of the rarest of all Andean mammals - the spectacled black bear. With patience and a bit of luck, we will observe this magnificent species as we spend time in the largest private ecological reserve in Ecuador. Traveling by horse and on foot, this “Galapagos of the Andes” is simply peace in nature.
A cultural experience awaits us at the handicraft market in Otavalo, the largest in the world! As you wander through their villages, the friendly Ecuadorian people greet you with their contagious smiles. Watch artists weave beautiful tapestries in the village of Peguche, and turn wood into works of wonder in the village of San Antonio. This trip is truly an expedition of nature and culture to be cherished forever.
Highlights:
• Trip originates and ends Quito, Ecuador. Explore the beautiful colonial “old town” of Quito before departing for Otavalo, the site of the world’s largest handicraft market. Visit the villages of Peguche, Cotacachi and San Antonio and watch the craftsmen develop works of art in the same manner as they did generations before.

Ecuador: Culture
ulture is one of Ecuador's most outstanding assets. It has been -and still is- a melting pot of cultural influences; of the old and the new; of the indigenous, Spanish, European and modern world cultures. Every town, and in fact every corner of the Country, is a jewel of folklore, art and tradition. Many museums maintain fine collections of pre-Columbian, Colonial, Republican and modern art, but the permanent interaction of cultures can be seen everywhere on the street.
th century, the Colonial style Quito School was replaced by formalism after independence, which favored subjects such as heroes of the revolution and members of high society.
Traditional Andean music has a distinctive haunting quality based on an unusual pentatonic scale. Wind and percussion instruments, including bamboo panpipes and flutes, are staples of the sound.
Ecuadorian food consists mainly of soup and stews, corn and potato pancakes ( "llapingachos" ), rice, eggs and vegetables. Seafood is particularly good, even in the highlands. Local specialties include cebiche , a raw seafood cocktail, caldo de patas , a soup made from cattle hooves;
