The population is ethnically mixed: 55% mestizo (mixed indigenous - Caucasian), 25% Indigenous, 10% Caucasian, 9% African, and 1% other. Although the population was heavily concentrated in the Andes highlands region a few decades ago, today it is divided about equally between that area and the coast. Migration toward cities - particularly Quito and Quayaquil - in all regions has increased the urban population to more than 50%. The rainforest region to the east of the mountains remains the most sparsely populated of Ecuador's three continental regions and contains only about 3% of the population.

Ecuador's People
Descendants of Ancient Societies

Eleven unique cultures weave harmoniously together to form Ecuador's Indigenous population. By far the largest ethnic group is the Andean Quichua, who number more than two million. The Quichua, the Otavalenos, Salasacas, and Saraguros - all residing in the Ecuadorian Andes - keep the languages of the ancient Incas alive. As a volunteer, you will experience Ecuador through her people.... through the eyes of children, their families and their care-givers.
Archaeologists trace the first inhabitants as far back as 10,000 BC, when hunters and gatherers established settlements on the southern coast and in the central highlands. By 3,200 BC three distinct agricultural-based civilizations had emerged, producing some of the hemisphere's oldest known pottery. Advanced indigenous cultures such as the Chorrera, Jama Coaque, Bahia, Tolita, Machalilla and Valdivia ( the oldest known culture in the Americas ), flourished between 12,000 B.C. to 1,500 A.D. in Ecuador territory. Today, Ecuador's population is ethnically mixed: 55 percent mestizo (mixed indigenous - Caucasian), 25 percent Indigenous (Indian),10 percent Caucasian, nine percent African, and one percent other. Years of oil exploration destroyed large sectors of the Amazonian rainforest ecosystem and displaced an indigenous people, the Huaroni, who made the rainforest their home and have now been pushed to the edge of extinction.

Ecuador: Culture and Development
Program Highlights
Over the years students and visiting staff have commented on how "finely tuned" this program is, and how impressed they are with the Academic Directors' attention to detail. The seasoned experience of this program's academic directors has led to an optimal balance between learning and processing. The excursions and other activities are carefully integrated with the academic components of the program.
Coastal Excursion
Students are placed in small rural communities where they experience first hand the reality of the impoverished, while implementing fieldwork techniques. This allows them to conduct a pre-ISP (Independent Study Project) investigation, thereby developing and enhancing their research skills.
Lecture Series
The Culture and Development lectures include renowned speakers who are actively working in their fields. They provide the students with a comprehensive view of the complex political, economic, social, cultural, and environmental issues facing Ecuador today. The student-led discussion groups provide a framework for valuable debate and self-questioning.

The most interesting piece is the whistle-bottle that reproduces the sounds of different animals when water is poured into it and the air contained in the bottle moves through a resonant box. Not less extraordinary is the decorative technique of iridescence whose quality has not been surpassed by any other native culture in Ecuador.

Home About Maps Travel Ecuador Blog ... Ahorre.net Musica Ecuatoriana Ecuador Culture and Artesania Ecuatoriana Tigua Art Ecuador Adventure Ecuador Culture ... Whale Watching Ecuador Culture Ecuador's pre-Columbian peoples excelled in pottery, painting, sculpture, and gold and silver work. The Spaniards trained indigenous artists to produce colonial religious art, which can be seen in many churches and museums. The Quito School of the 17th and 18th centuries combined these two influences but was replaced by formalism after independence, which favored subjects such as heroes of the revolution and members of high society. Ecuador's colonial religious architecture is predominantly baroque, although domestic architecture tends to be simple and elegant, comprising whitewashed verandahed houses built around a central courtyard. Traditional Andean music has a distinctive haunting quality based on an unusual pentatonic scale. Wind and percussion instruments, including bamboo panpipes and flutes, are staples of the sound. Local crafts include fine examples of basketry, leather work, woodcarving, weaving, ceramics and jewelry. About 40% of Ecuador's present population are Indians, and another 40% are mestizos. The ethnicity of the coastal population changes from north to south. Esmeraldas has the highest percentage of Afro-Ecuadorians of any province, and it also has several Indian tribes upriver from the coast. Further south, the population is more mestizo - the typical Spanish-Indian mix prevalent through Latin America.
