Teaching Economics Through Controversies
Gilles Raveaud (co-founder of Autisme-Économie
In this article, we present the reasons for our discontent as students of economics in France (1.) and find that they have a broad cause : the (desperate) quest of economists for scientificity (2.). Our proposal is to turn the teaching of economics in a completely different direction, where teaching of controversies would be given priority (3.). We then explain why teaching through controversies is preferable to current methods (4.), and, well, how to do it (5.). Finally, we offer a very tentative insight into the theory of knowledge, by pointing out affinities between the classical works of Max Weber and those of Tony Lawson. We then suggest that this more general framework of comparisons (in a well defined sense) may prove a useful guide, not only for teaching, but for research as well. 1. Reasons for our discontent

There is a close tie between my experimental economics research and my teaching philosophy. Learning is too often passive in economics, with a vast difference between abstract (but powerful) theoretical models and the busy nature of everyday economic activity. Claims about the efficiency of decentralized market-based economic activity fall flat when justified by mathematical proofs based on strong assumptions, like infinite numbers of traders. Putting students into the roles of market traders and strategic decision makers lets them see market efficiencies for themselves, alongside other experiments that reveal the large potential inefficiencies of non-market allocations (e.g., "rent-seeking") and market failures. These experiments increase the confidence of both students and their instructors in what is being taught and learned.

Learning Basic Economics The basic principles of economics provide an incredibly powerful framework for understanding and changing the world. Alas, it is hard to imagine a worse way to try and teach/learn these ideas than by using the standard lecture format and fat books that have become the norm. Over the last decade, colleagues and I have been developing a wonderful alternative for teaching economics. The approach, based on classroom experiments, actively engages students in experiencing, discovering, and understanding the key ideas underlying economics. Studies indicate that students learn as much or more using such methods, while enjoying the experience far more than usual. Ted Bergstrom and I have a textbook, Experiments with Economic Principles, 2nd ed (McGraw Hill), that fully embraces the experimental approach to teaching economic principles. back to top
EconU and EconX As my colleague Murray Gell-Mann points out, it is remarkable how little education has changed over the last few centuries (five hundred years ago, monks in a scriptorium used to dutifully sit and copy every word that was read to them by a lector from a manuscript...and now...). The web offers some new, and potentially powerful, learning opportunities, and both the EconU and

Unit Two: Studying Africa through the Social Studies
Module Nine: African Economies
Teacher's Edition Introduction to Module Nine: African Economies
This module, comprised of nine learning activities, is one of the longest in Exploring Africa! The completion of all the activities in this module may take three to four 50-minute class periods. Teachers may chose to teach the entire module or to select from among the learning activities. PURPOSE This module will introduce students to the economics of Africa. In accomplishing this goal, the learning activities will illustrate and increase student's understanding of economic concepts that have been introduced in prior social studies classes. Economics is the study of the production and distribution of wealth. Wealth is created by the production and distribution of goods and services. Economics can be studied at various levels or locations, for example, family/household, local community, state/province, nation, and global levels. The learning activities in this module will examine economic processes, that is the production and distribution of goods and services, at the local, national, regional, and continental levels, and will emphasize Africa's economic global connections.

Fritz M. Heinemann
Pennsylvania State Senator John R. Gordner, R-27, will receive the 2005 EconomicsPennsylvania Adam Smith Award for Distinguished Leadership at a luncheon to be held in his honor October 6 at Tedd’s on the Hill. Announcement of the selection of Senator Gordner was made by Kim A. Scopelliti, Chair of the EconomicsPennsylvania Endowment Committee, and a member of the luncheon planning committee.
In making the announcement, Ms. Scopelliti said: “Senator Gordner, as a member of the EconomicsPennsylvania Susquehanna Valley Regional Board, along with his outstanding record of public service, underscores the reasons we wanted to recognize and honor him for his dedication to serving others, and in particular, the young people of his District. His many years of volunteerism and direct involvement in community activities is a terrific example of what the Adam Smith Leadership Award represents and certainly serves as an example for others to emulate. John is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of EconomicsPennsylvania and has been a leader in helping us expand our educational programs and initiatives for teachers and students throughout the greater Susquehanna Valley region. It’s a great privilege to be able to publicly acknowledge him for his good works, sensitive service and commitment to personal standards of integrity, professionalism and excellence.”
