Harvard economics professor Greg Mankiw is also an adviser to the Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston December 6, 2000

By Greg Mankiw Question: How did you get involved with teaching and writing a textbook for introductory economics? Answer: When I arrived at Harvard as an assistant professor in 1985, my first teaching assignment was a section of Economics 10, the introductory economics course that about 1,000 Harvard undergraduates take each year. The experience was wonderful. After years of graduate school, there is nothing better to remind an economist what is important and exciting about his field than teaching the principles course. In this course, we use our knowledge to teach our fellow citizens how they can better understand the world in which they live. I started writing textbooks in 1988, shortly after getting tenure, when I realized that the Harvard department needed someone to teach intermediate macroeconomics. As I started thinking about how I would teach the course, I decided that I might as well write the textbook to go with it. I figured that once I had done all the work of preparing lecture notes, it wouldn't take much extra effort to turn those notes into a book. That youthfully optimistic assumption was ridiculous, but it led me down a path that I have not regretted.

The school uses a team-teaching approach, bringing together US-based faculty and Vietnamese instructors, translators and interpreters in order to ensure the highest quality of instruction and the most productive learning environment.Lectures are carried out in English with Vietnamese interpretation and are supplemented by problem sets, group discussions, and hands-on computer exercises. In addition to its present curriculum in public policy, the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program will begin in the near future to develop additional programs in law and the importance of legal development to the transition process as well as executive education programs in technology management and entrepreneurship.

Since 1998, the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program has used the Fellowship Program as a way of including the donor and business communities in the work of the program. The Fulbright Economics Teaching Program works with Sponsors to identify particular groups of potential applicants - either geographically or functionally. For example, sponsors with an interest in financial policy might elect to fund fellowships for participants from the banking or financial sector. Others with an interest in the policy framework of a particular region might elect to sponsor fellowships for participants from a Provincial Department. The FETP competitively selects applicants from the appropriate pool, after which the Sponsor awards the fellowship(s) to the selected applicant(s). The Fulbright Economics Teaching Program will provide opportunities for the Sponsor to interact with the fellowship recipients at Teaching Program events. Sponsors also get access to the program's resources and can attend special lectures and seminars that are organized on a regular basis at the Teaching Program.
