Lesson Plans Social Studies Economics Small Mall SMALL MALL
Submitted by: Guinn Hodgson (Mrs.)
Grade level:
Objective:
To teach "real-world" money management.
Resources:
paper, laminating machine or clear contact paper, lots of "stuff" for your mall.
Teacher Preparation:
Clean out your closet, attic, under your bed, etc. and get that "stuff" set up in a special place in your classroom with a sign saying SMALL MALLOPENING SOON. When the students begin asking about this (and they WILL), tell them they will have a chance to purchase items from Small Mall! (You will already have cut out (I designed them on my computer-it was fun) 'Small Mall Credit Cards' with credit limits already established.) Procedure:
Variations/Options:
CREDIT! They learn how easy it is to flash that laminated credit card and buy something at the "Mall", then have to cough up some of those class bucks. I heard comments like: "Now I don't have enough to buy that poster. I should have waited." Or, "I need to say please and thank you and earn some more bucks so I get this card paid off." And I heard some comments like, "Man, I don't know about these credit cards..." Real World Usage: If you're not into doing the credit card thing, the monthly auctions are very popular. They earn the bucks, they have to keep up with them, and at auction time they bid and buy!

Economics:
What's It Worth to You?
With , students learn the practical application of formalized ideas from economics while participating in simulation and real-world projects. Ranging from creating their own economic enterprises to designing the budget for an entire economy, groups of students learn to optimize the use of various resources, employees, and skills for a world that requires interaction. Through the hands-on learning activities, this cooperative aspect promotes the understanding of the difficulties of dealing with many interrelated parameters. Included in lesson packages:
  • Lesson plans (aligned with academic and technology standards, activities, homework assignments, etc.) Readings (available readings that include, but are not limited to, excerpts, short stories, etc.)

These two institutes are researching the integration of two technologies (community input/output economic analyses and GIS) to discover new forces to promote community development. The internet provides valuable teacher resources with lesson plans for all subjects. Below are selected web-based lesson plans for teaching economics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These lesson plans were selected mainly for their application to the topic of this presentation. They do not represent the only resources for ideas and lesson plans on the web. At Clabber Girl Corporation, we fully support the work of teachers and salute them for the difference they make in our children's lives. In an effort to help make their jobs a little easier, we've created a series of lesson plans for use in home economics courses across the country.
Each of the lesson plans will be fully functional and immediately usable. Each includes a full working outline, learning objectives, advanced preparation necessary, learning steps and a recipe. Depending on the response that we receive, we'll update the plans as often as necessary, so please tell us what you think! Here are the lesson plans currently available:

(IA does not currently have standards.) Educators can view a specific state standard to see which FTE materials correlate with it, or they can select an FTE unit, activity or program and see which standards from a given state are covered by the FTE material. The correlations cover all FTE materials and programs and provide correlation data to Economics, History, Geography, and Civics standards in grades 6-12.
