Additional information is available for the following registered author(s): Abstract
Open source software development has organizational characteristics that are out of the ordinary (e.g., flatter hierarchy, self-organization, self-regulation, and no ownership structure). The study suggests that this organization of work can be explained by combining the recently developed organizational theory of professions with the classic one of clubs. Still, the explanans falls within the broad rubric of the knowledge approach. The claim is in fact that this organization is at least as good as a firm in sharing rich types of information in real time because (a) constituents have symmetry of absorptive capacity, and (b) software itself is a capital structure embodying knowledge. Indeed, in this regard the study goes so far as to suggest that the distinction between input (knowledge) and output (software) is somewhat amorphous because knowledge and software are not only the common (spontaneous) standards, but also the nonrivalrous network products being shared. Indeed, many students completing an undergraduate major in economics do not pursue careers as professional economists; they enter such fields as law, management, finance, and labor relations. By helping to develop a student's ability to analyze and communicate, the Economics Department shares in the liberal arts effort to provide a foundation upon which the student can build any number of possible careers. SFU Library Economics Collections Policy
The Department of Economics provides a range of courses on economic theory, economic history, economic development, econometrics, and various other branches of economics such as natural resource economics and monetary economics. Research by the faculty is similarly varied: examples of topics include the economics of crime and punishment, the impact of environmental regulation on the economy, the regulation of financial institutions, public policy towards business, and developing/transition economies. The SFU Library collects materials to support the courses, research, and goals of the Department of Economics. Economics Degrees are offered at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Students may choose to study toward a minor in economics, or they may pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in either the major or honours programs. Joint majors are available with business, geography, political science, and Latin American studies. Moreover, there is a joint honours program with business administration. Above the undergraduate level, the Department offers Master of Arts (MA) and PhD degrees with courses in all major branches of economic research and discourse. The Department is also involved with research centres of the Canadian Institutes for Advanced Research Program in Economic Growth and Policy, and of the Research on Immigration and Integration in the Metropolis (RIIM) group.

Douglas Irwin Lecture

Douglas Irwin, Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, is the author of Against the Tide: An Intellectual History of Free Trade (Princeton, 1996) and Free Trade Under Fire (Princeton, 2002). His books, articles and newspaper editorials view contemporary international trade policy from the perspective of economic and intellectual history.

What can I do with an economics major (or minor)? Just about anything, thanks to the systematic approach it brings toward analyzing a wide variety of situations. Economics is one of the most versatile and useful majors because it hones your analytic and critical thinking abilities while you learn about the global economy - an international system which results from the aggregation of practical decisions made by households, firms and governments in our nation and abroad.

About Bates Academics Admissions Student Life ... Links Intelligent citizenship makes increasing demands on an individual's knowledge of economics. Policy makers in business, government, and the nonprofit sector must frequently evaluate complex economic issues. The goal of the economics curriculum is to educate students, both majors and nonmajors, about the ideas of economics and how they apply to today's world. Introductory economics courses at Bates (courses numbered 100-199) emphasize a broad nontechnical understanding of economic institutions, policy, and analysis. Courses numbered between 200 and 249 provide nontechnical introductions to more specialized topics. Courses numbered between 250 and 299 cover intermediate economic theory and introduce students to the methods of empirical analysis. Three-hundred-level courses integrate practical economic issues with empirical and theoretical analyses, enabling students to develop sophisticated insight into both contemporary and historical economic problems.
