    The coming dollar crisis
Saturday, September 17th, 2005 Brad DeLong has a great discussion of the opposing views on the coming dollar crisis.More soon on this, but my one-sentence take is that the optimists believe that it is possible to generate as much US dollar liquidity as required to prevent a large increase in interest rates (despite a depreciation), without generating domestic inflation in the US. In this, they have recent US history on their side. The pessimists think that, sooner or later, this kind of policy will fail. Posted in Economics - General

    Oil economics
Sunday, June 5th, 2005 So I was reading the less interesting bits of the paper and looked at a report on the price of oil which, as is pretty much routine, contained the suggestion that a shortage of refinery capacity was contributing to the high price of crude. Turning my brain on for a moment, it struck me that economics 101 suggests the exact opposite. Posted in Economics - General

How long can this go on ?
Tuesday, May 31st, 2005 Put commodity prices back to normal, and interest rates up by a couple of percentage points, and we could easily be running a deficit in excess of 10 per cent of GDP . At that rate, net overseas obligations would be in excess of 100 per cent of GDP within five years.Australia has been called a miracle economy on the strength of an impressively long, but by no means unique, economic expansion.
