AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS
Bachelor of Science
AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS The Agricultural Economics curriculum emphasizes a strong background in economics with applications to production agriculture, agribusiness, natural resources, and the environment. Courses are also in-cluded in basic agricultural and biological sciences, liberal arts, and business. Students have 18 hours of electives to use to further individual specialization or to broaden the educational experience. Employment opportunities for graduates in Agricultural Economics are many and diverse. Private sector opportunities include agricultural production, banking, finance, marketing, and public relations. Public sector opportunities include national/local organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and cooperative extension services. Graduates have also begun businesses or returned to family-owned businesses. This major also provides an excellent background for professional or graduate study in several disciplines. Students in the Agricultural Economics curriculum take a basic set of courses during the freshman and sophomore years. During the junior and senior years, students concentrate in one of five emphasis areas: Agricultural Business, Economics, International Trade and Development, Production, and Real Estate. Students should select one of the five emphasis areas by the end of the sophomore year.

Formal agricultural training is available at five different levels, i.e. at primary schools, secondary schools, colleges of agriculture, technikons and universities. Primary and secondary schools are managed by the education departments of the provinces while colleges of agriculture are controlled by the provincial departments of Agriculture. Technikons fall under the Department of Education and agricultural faculties are the responsibility of the universities concerned. The ARC (Agricultural Research Council) regularly presents various specialised training courses and infor-mation days which are attended by farmers and delega-tes from South Africa and neighbouring countries. Specialised exhibitions, training courses and open days (with practical demonstrations) are used to reach the small-scale farmer. Veterinary surgeons are trained at the University of Pretoria's Faculty Science at Onderstepoort. The former Faculty of Veterinary Science at the Medical University of South Africa has amalgamated with the Faculty of the University of Pretoria. State veterinarians are assisted countrywide by animal health technicians who obtained a National Diploma in Health at certain technikons and various other colleges of agriculture. They are involved in the observation of diseases, the testing and inoculation of animals for specific diseases, as well as extension to stock farmers on the prevention of the most important animal diseases.

http://www.nlh.no/ios/eng/Teaching/Study Guide for IOS/ii-1_5e.htm
The ordinary study lasts 5 years and ends with a Master of Science, (Cand. agric.)
It is divided in two parts. The first part takes 3 1/2 years and is equivalent of a Bachelor of Science degree (Cand.mag.). It is also possible for students from other universities to enter the second part of the study. In the description of the study plans towards the M.Sc. degree and in the course descriptions we continue to use the Norwegian codes.
THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
  • The purpose of the 5 year study is to reach a degree: Candidatus Agriculture.
This is comparable with the international Master of Science Degree. The curriculum is designed to enhance students creativity and educate students in their analytical skills, critical thinking as well as in the ability to cooperate in problem-solving tasks. The bulk of the required curriculum is designed to develop an understanding of the relationship between the economic and social systems on one hand, and the biological systems and processes on the other hand. The particular objective of the program is to enable the student to apply economics and social sciences in the context of concrete situations involving biological systems. (Examples include food production, wood production and processing, recreational issues, the esthetic experience of nature, the valuation of natural resources and so on).
