AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS Bachelor of Science AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS The Agricultural Economics curriculum emphasizes a strong background in economics with applications to production agriculture, agribusiness, natural resources, and the environment. Courses are also in-cluded in basic agricultural and biological sciences, liberal arts, and business. Students have 18 hours of electives to use to further individual specialization or to broaden the educational experience. Employment opportunities for graduates in Agricultural Economics are many and diverse. Private sector opportunities include agricultural production, banking, finance, marketing, and public relations. Public sector opportunities include national/local organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and cooperative extension services. National Agricultural Training Board Formal agricultural training is available at five different levels, i.e. at primary schools, secondary schools, colleges of agriculture, technikons and universities. Primary and secondary schools are managed by the education departments of the provinces while colleges of agriculture are controlled by the provincial departments of Agriculture. Technikons fall under the Department of Education and agricultural faculties are the responsibility of the universities concerned. The ARC (Agricultural Research Council) regularly presents various specialised training courses and infor-mation days which are attended by farmers and delega-tes from South Africa and neighbouring countries. Specialised exhibitions, training courses and open days (with practical demonstrations) are used to reach the small-scale farmer. Veterinary surgeons are trained at the University of Pretoria's Faculty Science at Onderstepoort. The former Faculty of Veterinary Science at the Medical University of South Africa has amalgamated with the Faculty of the University of Pretoria. State veterinarians are assisted countrywide by animal health technicians who obtained a National Diploma in Health at certain technikons and various other colleges of agriculture. The ordinary study lasts 5 years and ends with a Master of Science, (Cand. agric.) It is divided in two parts.
