Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture : Guide to Courses
Overview
In April 1995 the new Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture was formed from the an amalgamation of the University's Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture (VCAH). The Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture is the largest only university faculty in Australia to offer training in both agricultural science and forest science. It has one of the oldest and largest university schools of agriculture (established in 1905) and one of only two schools of forestry recognised by the Standing Committee on Forestry of the Australian Forestry Council. The Faculty now operates from eight campuses: Parkville, Creswick (Forestry), Dookie, Burnley, Gilbert Chandler, Glenormiston, Longerenong and McMillan. In addition, the Faculty has access to a research farm at Strathfieldsaye in East Gippsland. Close teaching and research links exist with the Faculties of Arts; Architecture and Planning; Economics and Commerce; Engineering Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Science; and Veterinary Science. Students in undergraduate courses at Parkville may take elective subjects from one or more of these faculties.

Curriculum
In 1999 the school curriculum was completely revised. For these revisions the recommendations made by the Presidential Task Force for the reform of University and vocational training was based. Diversification of courses and curricular and introduction of course unit system, relating courses to the needs of the economy, the job market and student aspirations, establishment of organizational arrangement for encouraging entrepreneurship venture which help students for self employment and income generation, introducing of student dissertation etc. are the main changes in 1999 curriculum revision. In the curriculum, there are 10 and 12 subjects for the first and second year academic program of the Diploma course. Sixty percent (60%) of training time is allocated for skill development through field, workshop and laboratory practices. Forty percent (40%) of time is allocated for knowledge base training through lectures, project works, directed supervised studies and self-learning through modules. The evaluation of the students' academic progress is formative and summative. Competences stated in each subject are tested during the progress of the course. In addition, the assessment of the student performance in skills, their attitude towards agricultural works, assessed by agricultural production during the field exercise. In awarding grades the skill components of the courses is weighted 60% as compared to 40% weighting for the knowledge component. The number of credits assigned to a subject based on the contents of the subject. This is reflected in the computation of the Grade Point Average (GPA) of each student.
