Description
Activities
This unit consists of nine activities and supporting appendices. Each activity includes a description with suggested duration, and then information under the following headings:
  • Expectations Assessment Teaching/Learning Strategies Modifications/Expanded Opportunities Resources
  • Throughout the unit, Teacher Notes provide suggestions and advice regarding the delivery of the unit and individual activities. The activities in this unit are: All sample units have a culminating activity. This activity serves a number of purposes. It provides a focus for the unit, and acts as the "filter" through which the Overall Expectations and SpecifiExpectations are delivered (teaching/learning strategies) and assessed/evaluated. In addition, the final demonstration brings the activities of the unit to a conclusion where students demonstrate their knowledge and skills generally required by the overall and key specifiexpectations. The culminating activity in this unit is Activity 9: Canadian World Trade in which the final demonstration is a visual display.

Innovation in Mathematics: Proceedings of the Second International Mathematica Symposium Year: Page range: Description
In this paper several packages useful for analyzing and simulating economic systems are presented. The packages include functions for (1) solving simultaneous equations exactly in real domain, (2) obtaining necessary conditions of constrained static optimization problems, (3) solving simultaneous nonlinear equations approximately, (4) determining signs of expressions, (5) solving differential equations approximately, (6) solving boundary-value problems approximately, and (7) solving dynamic optimization problems approximately. An application of these packages to an urban economic model is also presented. Mathematica for Windows Version 2.2.3 has been used here, but the packages should work in Version 3 as well.

This article is a modified version of a work presented in the 4th Conference on Information Systems, Analysis and Synthesis - ISAS'98, held at Orlando, FL, in July 12-16, 1998 and first published in its proceedings at pp. 64-69.

  • 1. INTRODUCTION Economic systems can be considered as evolving complex systems where economic agents rationally perform actions in order to reach a better degree of satisfaction. In this way, the agents organize themselves and make decisions about producing, investing and consuming. Those decisions are taken in a context of uncertainty, and they are based on the beliefs (or expectations) that the agents have about possible future states of the environment.

Refocusing Disaster Aid By spending part of their aid before disaster strikes, the international donor community can help the poor to better cope with extreme events. Support for novel instruments that transfer catastrophe risk to global markets could pair with preventive measures to complement post-disaster humanitarian relief. In the August 12th issue of Science , three scientists from IIASA's Risk Program propound the benefits of such a strategy.

    97. Ecofluid Systems Inc. - Biological Wastewater Treatment Systems
USBF incorporates all the advanced features of an extended aeration activated sludge process into one compact unit for highly efficient, economic and effective wastewater treatment with low operating and maintenance costs.
    http://www.ecofluid.com

    News Bulletins
ECOfluid Systems Inc. is a provider of advanced biological wastewater treatment technology - USBF™ The USBF process is a modification of the conventional activated sludge process that incorporates an anoxic selector zone and an upflow sludge blanket filtration clarifier all in one integrated bioreactor vessel. The treatment includes efficient reduction of BOD and TSS but also biological nutrient removal (BNR) by the processes of denitrification and "biological luxury uptake". The ensuing compact, modular system takes up less space and contains very few moving parts. The result is an efficient, highly affordable wastewater treatment plant with low maintenance and operating costs. USBF technology has no inherent capacity limits and is used in a wide range of applications. Plants serving the domestic and municipal sectors or treating industrial, food processing and agricultural wastewater are in successful operation worldwide. The high treatment efficiency of the advanced secondary USBF process opens the door to cost effective tertiary post-treatment. The process has been increasingly utilized in the design of tertiary effluent (Class A or Title 22) water reclamation plants. Site Design by
