45. Women & The Economy - Economic Systems
Women and the Economy a project of UNPAC Manitoba. Come and share your stories with us.
http://unpac.ca/economy/econsystems.html
Economic Systems For those of us living in Canada at the beginning of the 21st century it is easy to assume that the economic system in which we find ourselves is the only economic system there is - that all peoples everywhere are using it and have always used it. An economic system is a way of structuring an economy to reflect the values, assumptions, and goals of a particular culture. Much of the world today operates out of a market economic system. Market economists believe that the market is sufficient to serve all aspects of human life. But there are other ways of structuring an economy and economic systems that recognize that not all values have a market price.
Jump ahead to:
Let's look at some different kinds of economies:
Subsistence economy
Originally all peoples on the earth lived in what we now call subsistence economies, described by Indian Eco-feminist Vandana Shiva as economies in which you "satisfy basic needs through self-provisioning."

Lesson 2
Economic Systems
"Students should learn about alternatives to the market system, such as traditional and command economies . . . (they) should study the strengths and weaknesses of each society and its values regarding the objectives of an economic system." ASSUMPTION: Understanding the core values and assumptions of other economies, as well as our own, contributes to the goal of developing cultural literacy. It also stimulates the imagination and fosters experimentation, helping students envision how an economy could be organized. DESCRIPTION: Economic systems reflect the values, assumptions and goals of a particular culture. Subsistence economies , which prevail in the more remote and less industrialized areas of the world, place much value on ecology and living in harmony within the natural limits of their environment. Capitalist and Socialist economies both share the goal of generating material wealth but differ in their approach. Capitalist economies emphasize individual freedom while Socialist economies emphasize social equality . The Buddhist economic system

gcse economics - tools of the trade: economic systems
No two economies are organised in the same way, but they all have to solve three basic problems 1. WHAT GOODS AND SERVICES TO PRODUCE
e.g. what cars, leisure goods etc. 2. HOW TO PRODUCE THE GOODS
e.g. how much machinery, which city to produce in 3. FOR WHOM TO PRODUCE
e.g. who should receive the goods and services SHOULD THESE DECISIONS BE MADE BY PRIVATE FIRMS AND INDIVIDUALS OR BY THE GOVERNMENT? THREE TYPES OF ECONOMIC SYSTEMS 1. FREE MARKET SYSTEM These decisions are made largely by private individuals and firms. They decide what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce. Therefore resources are allocated via the forces of supply and demand. EXAMPLES Private firms would provide hospitals for patients. They would also decide how much to charge them. 2 COMMAND OR PLANNED SYSTEM The decisions are made by the Government. The Government makes plans about what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce. Therefore, resources are allocated by the Government through a system of planning EXAMPLES The Government would tell factories what jeans to produce and what price to sell then for
The Government would provide hospitals for patients. They will probably be free to use

Undergraduate Minor in Economic Systems Design
The allocation and exchange of resources are central aspects of human activity. The design of processes that efficiently allocate resources and foster exchange are crucial in society, organizations, personal interactions and individual decision making. Economic Systems Design is the scientific study of the design, development, testing and understanding of economic institutions. Economic Systems Design explores problems in the design of allocation systems and provides a method to both develop and test the properties of such systems. A Minor in Economic Systems Design will prepare students to undertake the scientific process of understanding and developing systems of exchange and their incentives. This minor is both unique and extremely marketable. The skills offered through this Minor can be of use to e-commerce designers, policy analysts, systems designers, engineers, and computer scientists.
Requirements The interdisciplinary minor in Economic Systems Design consists of 3 required courses (9 hours) and 2 elective courses (6 hours) distributed as follows: Required Courses

Economic Systems Design
Economic Systems Design (ESD) is a unique program offered by ICES. The main focus of ESD is the design, development, testing and implementation of exchange systems, including such applications as:
  • auctions to allocate public resources (e.g., FCC spectra) network markets (e.g., electric power, natural gas, and water) scheduling systems (e.g., scientific observations in space missions) price patterns and overreaction in financial markets, and distributed software agents for computational market systems.
ESD utilizes experimental methods in economics as a way to testbed new exchange systems. More specifically we use "smart" (computer-assisted) markets to develop computerized systems and algorithms that allow participants to execute complex trades, subject to feasibility constraints.

Comparative Economic Systems
Study of resource allocation, growth, and income distribution in capitalist, market socialist, and centrally planned economies. Prerequisite: 2.0 in ECON 301. Class Description
Economists’ Adventures and Misadventures This course investigates how institutional arrangements impact the ability of the members of a society to better their lives and to achieve rising economic welfare. We look at the process of institutional change, seeking to bring analytical tools to bear in understanding how institutional change impacts incentives and behavior. Our methodology makes use of case studies drawn from contemporary societies. In many cases, the evidence of problems—poverty, health crises, economic dislocation, inflation, crime, and corruption—suggest hypotheses about the determinants of good performance and the sources of poor performance. We look at the lessons to be learned from adventures and misadventures in modern economies. Goals of the Course One purpose of the course is a broad understanding of the relationship between social, political, and legal institutions and economic well being. A second purpose is the development of skill in applying economic theory to the understanding of real-world situations. We use the analysis of case studies to enhance your ability to think analytically, apply economic models, assess economic information, and practice the skills needed to undertake and understand empirical research. In this class, you will apply the tools of economics to the analysis of real world cases.

Office hours : Monday and Wednesday 12:45-1:45, Wednesday 3:30-4:30, and by appointment Purpose of the course - economics emphasis The underlying purpose of the economics we study in this course is to help you improve your ability to make sense of political-economic systems and processes. Through taking the course, you should become familiar with some essential concepts of political economy, and develop habits of thinking that will help you use those concepts to make sense of the social world. The more immediate purpose of the course is to investigate how much economic freedom societies should have . At one logical extreme, government might be used only to protect private property and enforce contracts, leaving citizens free to engage in any mutually agreeable exchanges they choose. At the other logical extreme, government might own all property, plan centrally, and dictate all economic activities. Between those two extremes, where should societies locate themselves? Where according to the demands of justice? Where in order to achieve the greatest economic well-being? This is a fascinating and important topic. Its historical importance should be obvious: Under planned-economy ideology and policy, about half of Europe and much of Asia have suffered terrible economic backwardness and deprivation, political terror, and environmental destruction for more than half a century. And millions of people were murdered by their own governments in the Soviet Union, China and the "killing fields" of Cambodia.
