Global History Economic Systems
Introduction
The study of economic systems includes traditional market command , and mixed economies . All of these systems attempt to answer the same questions. What should be produced? How much? How should goods be produced? And, for whom? Tradition economies rely on farming and very simple barter trading. Examples include Neolithic farming villages and the first river civilizations. A market economy is controlled by the forces of supply and demand. Market economies, such as those run by the Western European democracies have allowed these countries to grow large and strong. A command economy is run by a strong centralized government and tends to focus on industrial goods. The Soviet Union and Communist China in the 20th century operated under this economic system. While short term gains did occur, the majority of people suffered under system that paid little attention to food production or consumer goods. A mixed economy is a combination of market and command. The United States and many nations in the European Union operated under this system today.

Students use a comparative approach to explore concepts and materials that are frequently neglected in other economics courses. An introductory essay provides background information to the 12 classroom- ready lessons. Students examine and answer:
  • What is the economic basis for land ownership and resources? What are the advantages and disadvantages of central decision-making? What is the appropriate scope of, and limits to, competition? What is government’s role in a market economy? How much security should government provide for low-income workers? How much inequality in distribution of wealth is acceptable?

"Economic Systems"
Since its first appearance in 1970 the Jahrbuch der Wirtschaft Osteuropas has been among the most influential periodicals dedicated to the analysis of centrally planned economies. Economic Systems ( Jahrbuch der Wirtschaft Osteuropas) continues this tradition. Economic Systems is a refereed journal publishing applied economic theory, international comparisons and empirical research related to the theory of economiec systems in general and the Soviet Union, East - European, and Chinese economies in particular. Special attention will be devoted to the problem of transforming centrally planned economies into market economies. The journal is edited at the Osteuropa-Institut München and already has some EACES members among its editors. In order to make the cooperation with our Association still stronger, the editorial board of the journal has invited EACES to name four of its members as ex officio associat editors. It is also suggested that these four representatives be appointed for two years. A decision on this proposal was taken by the Executive Committee in Freiberg. Economic Systems is offered to the individual members together with annual membership fee.

Course Description and Introduction: This is a seminar course in the comparative analysis of variant types of capitalist and non-capitalist social formations and the transition of social formations from one set of prevalent characteristics to a new and radically different set. We will discuss the theoretical problems in applying current economic theories ( neoclassical , orthodox Marxian, and institutionalist) to the comparative analysis of social formations. class processes ). This dichotomy further ignores the flexibility of capitalism and the constantly changing mix of state intervention (into market exchange relationships, the conditions shaping worker freedoms and unfreedoms, firm governance, etc.), including occasional direct state involvement in productive investment and production even in the most liberal NATO member states, such as the U.S.A., during certain historical periods when "free market" approachs are deemed insufficient to resolve economic crises. How has it been possible to debate economic systems without reference to class processes (an historically important concept in exploring the differences and similarities between societies)? Experience Prague this summer in a unique educational environment with 100 students from more than 25 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and the United States. The American Institute on Political and Economic Systems (AIPES) is an academic program designed to explore the political, economic and cultural issues of the world as it grows under democratic principles. AIPES embodies diversity and culture as its cornerstone to educating future leaders. Download a proper CV/resume format (PDF) Program Logistics Scholarship Opportunities Students gather to study the basic foundations of a free society, and are encouraged to apply these concepts to the transitions already taking place in their home countries. Students from a wide range of nationalities, religions and ethnicities have a chance to interact, learn and share their experiences in ways that can benefit their educational and professional development. American students are given an opportunity to discover distant cultures, which once were divided by the barriers of the Cold War. For three weeks, students will attend classes, participate in a parliamentary simulation, listen to prominent speakers, and attend special events designed to engage them in an educational, cultural and social exchange. This combination of activities leads to life-long friendships and a unique exchange of ideas that cannot be gained elsewhere.

1. The need for an organic theory of the organism and of economic systems
Hodgson (1993) and Ormerod (1994) are the latest among a string of economists to declare their own discipline "in crisis" within the past 15 years. And like the others before them, they trace the crisis to the mechanistic foundations of modern western science itself. They call for an alternative, organicist approach to economics. Precisely the same critique of neo(classical) Darwinian theory of evolution has been taking place since the 1970s (see Saunders, and Oyama, this volume; Ho and Saunders, 1984; Ho and Fox, 1988; Ho, 1996a), with a "new organicism" emerging (see Ho, 1996b and references therein) which explicitly affirms Whitehead's (1925) view that nature cannot be understood except in terms of a theory of the organism that
