About Business and Economic History
This archives contains the published proceedings of the Business History Conference from 1975 through 1999. Prior to 1975 the proceedings were published irregularly with varying titles and formats; the first volume appeared in 1962. We hope eventually to add those early volumes to the BEH Archives. Between 1975 and 1999 the proceedings were published regularly under the title Business and Economic History . In 1993 a second annual volume was introduced, containing revised versions of papers, including the Newcomen Prize Essay, selected after a refereeing process. All articles from these years may be found here, and indexes for Presidential Addresses, articles awarded the Newcomen Prize, and Krooss Dissertation Prize summaries can also be found on the navigation bar to the left, as well as a cumulative index by author.
The proceedings volumes have been the volunteer work of a series of editors: Albert K. Steigerwalt edited the 1962 Proceedings ; J. V. Fenstermaker edited the 1965 volume. There was no editor indicated on the

http://www.cepr.org/research/Initiatives/EH.htm
Economic History Initiative CEPR is pleased to announce a new initiative in economic history, which aims to make the CEPR the focal point for cliometric research in Europe. There are several reasons for embarking on such an initiative now.
  • Long run growth has once again become a central issue in macroeconomic research, and intellectual exchanges between growth theorists and economic historians have become more frequent. Both theorists and applied economists are becoming increasingly interested in the development and impact of institutions, and economic history provides the ideal laboratory for economists interested in such issues. There is a need for more ‘presentist’ economic history in Europe, which uses history to speak to contemporary debates about globalization, the international financial architecture, deflation, and other pressing policy issues. As European integration progresses, the demand for a coherent account of European economic history, rather than a series of disjointed national histories, becomes more urgent; as does the need for more systematic comparative research.
The aim of the Economic History Initiative is to facilitate interaction between quantitative economic historians and the rest of the economics profession in Europe. To this end, we will seek funding for regular seminars; for more targeted conferences on specific themes of interest to both economists and economic historians; for training activities that will foster a more cliometric and presentist approach to European economic history; and for a network of researchers who could develop a consistent, long run, pan-European data base.

To further these ends, it sponsors an active conference program, facilitates UC faculty and graduate student intercampus exchanges, and attracts distinguished visitors to the UC system. The Group is internationally recognized as a leading forum for advancing the frontiers of economic history. It has gained this reputation through its conference programs and the outstanding research of its members. The All-UC Group in Economic History is comprised of over 150 active faculty members and graduate students on all eight general UC campuses. Although its membership is predominately comprised of historians and economists, a sizable number of individuals represent departments such as agricultural economics, sociology, political science, the Graduate Group in Demography, and schools of law and business.
