Questions and Answers about the 2002 Economic Census
Why does the government take the Economic Census?
Good public policy depends on accurate information. The Economic Census provides official measures of output for industries and geographic areas. Economic policy makers in federal, state and local governments use Economic Census data to project trends, plan for development, and assess the impact of trade and corporate restructuring on particular industries. Economic Census data also help build the foundation for economic indicators and other statistics.

Economic Indicators
Hundreds of statistics about the economy are generated every month. Each gives some information about the condition of the economy. None of these statistics alone is a reliable indicator of overall economic health. Many economic statistics, though certainly not all, can be assigned to one or another of three distinct groups depending on the timing of their movements relative to changes in the national economy. Some tend to turn upward on a fairly regular basis in advance of the national economy and typically turn downward before the national economy begins to weaken. These are known as leading indicators, and they signal the advent of recessions and recoveries several months in advance. Others perform much in step with the economy as a whole and so are known as coincident indicators. Finally, those whose turning points trail behind the national business cycle are known as lagging indicators.

Globalization: The Economics Behind the Scenes No crystal ball is required to predict that, in the coming decades, the Canadian economy will increasingly be subjected to the phenomenon the popular press has labelled "globalization". Some key effects of globalization on Canada are already evident. One of them is that consumers now have greater choice because products from all over the world are available in Canada at affordable prices. Another is that globalization constrains government in new ways. Investors, entrepreneurs and businesses who do not like Canadian government policy are free, as never before, to take their business elsewhere. Globalization has also opened world markets to Canadian businesses while at the same time subjecting many Caandian companies to competition from parts of the world almost unheard of a decade ago. In Canada, the combined effects of globalization have forced a rapid rationalization of the economy, which has disrupted the

A NEW LOOK AT ECONOMIC INDEXES FOR THE STATES IN THE THIRD DISTRICT

Theodore M. Crone If we want to know how things are going in the economy, which measures should we look at? Unemployment? GDP? Or something else? One solution is to combine several measures into a composite index of current or future economic activity. Several years ago, the Philadelphia Fed did just that for the states in the Third District. Now, a number of factors suggest that revisions of those indexes are in order. This article explains what those revisions entail and why the new indexes are better than the old ones.

FROM CENTRALIZATION TO DECONCENTRATION: PEOPLE AND JOBS SPREAD OUT
Gerald A. Carlino During the first half of the 20th century, people and jobs in the United States moved from rural to urban areas. After World War II, the U.S. saw other important shifts, including deconcentration - the movement of people and jobs from large, dense MSAs to small, less dense ones. This article looks at various aspects of deconcentration to see just how fast growth has been in less dense MSAs, whether trends for population and employment are the same, and whether the experience of MSAs in the frostbelt and sunbelt has been the same.

A Guide To Free Economics And Business Data On The Web
This guide to data sources on the web has been kindly written by John Sloman, the Director of the Economics Network. There are further links to these and many other data sources on the Economics Network Web site. Here are some links that you may find useful for accessing statistics and other information.
  • National Statistics
National Statistics (formerly ONS) data sets are now freely available. By visiting a part of the site called 'Time Series Data' (follow the link below), you can access all the tables from the publications we all know: Economic Trends (Monthly and Annual Supplement), the Blue Book, the Pink Book, Financial Statistics etc.
    Time series data
On entering the site you are given two main options. The first is to 'Access Individual Series'. If you opt for this, a panel will be displayed. Having selected the publication (e.g. Economic Trends), you then have to select the table; then the series; and then the time period. This will involve clicking on 'Go' several times. The second option is to download an entire release (e.g. of Economic Trends). If you opt for this, then you have a choice of downloading it in a simple zipped text file. This is not easy to use. The alternative is to download it into Navidata 3.1. This software makes it easy to transform or graph series. You can use it to compose tables from a number of different series. Download the software from:
