Conservation Management Internship
Purpose
Interest in restoration of longleaf pine ecosystems and conservation-oriented management of existing longleaf pine systems for both forest and wildlife values is increasing. There is, however, a scarcity of well-trained individuals to carry out such management goals, and experience is difficult to obtain. Most academic programs in natural resources focus on specific and often intensive aspects of resource management (e.g., timber or game management) and rarely integrate conservation objectives as a primary consideration in the management of natural resources. In addition, few (if any) academic programs provide practical training in land management, particularly in the use of fire in the southeastern Coastal Plain. A training program that provides hands-on, practical resource management experience in longleaf pine forests is therefore needed in the region. actively involved in land management at Ichauway (i.e., it is not a passive process) with a focus on ecologically sound resource management.

(Media are welcome to download/publish this image with related news stories.) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Israeli and Palestinian environmental researchers are collaborating and sharing information through a year-old project initiated by the Cooperative Monitoring Center at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Sandia National Laboratories. The cross-border collaboration brings together the scientists to study ways to help maintain shared sustainable grazing and agricultural systems important to the future of both Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA). "In the environmental sciences the ecosystem does not function according to political boundaries," says Ben-Gurion University Professor Moshe Shachak, a preeminent desert ecologist who serves as Israeli coordinator for the project. "Therefore, especially in the Middle East we must have cooperation if we are to have a sound environmental program. The goal of the program is to understand the structure and function of water-limited systems and preserve the services they provide for humans." CMC Program Manager Arian Pregenzer initiated the project on Sustainable Land Use Monitoring in the Middle East while visiting Israel in the spring of 1998. During this visit she met Shachak, who was finalizing plans to establish three International Long Term Research (ILTER) sites in Israel. Pregenzer suggested that joint ecological research could be a productive area for collaboration between Israeli and Arab scientists, thereby furthering the Middle East peace process and ultimately regional security.

    Research Grants
Research to support the NPS mission, whether to gain understanding of resources or to develop management approaches, may be funded by cooperating nonprofit associations (found in many parks), outside organizations, or through interagency cooperative efforts. It may be carried out by NPS employees or by researchers and students from academic institutions (including land grant and private institutions), research organizations, or other government agencies. It is our hope that the importance of parks as sites for research in increasingly critical areas such as ecology, biological diversity, climate change, aquatic systems, and other resource-related areas will grow and bring enhanced opportunities for funding. The following organizations have recently supported research in Grand Canyon through their grant programs, or have indicated interest in doing so. National Parks Foundation Competitive Grants
In 1967 Congress established the National Park Foundation (NPF) to provide an official, nonprofit partner empowered to obtain private sector support (money and other assets) for the National Park Service. This action created a direct support link between the public and the parks. The Foundation actively seeks money from individuals, foundations and corporations, and distributes it to the parks, often through a competitive grant process. Programs: · Humanitarian Initiatives: AERCG has developed a Program called African-American Doctors For Africa (AADOFA). The program brings together African-American medical practitioners and others from other ethnicity to provide short-term medical intervention and a long-term program on medical research and human health capacity building in African countries. The program was initiated and implemented with the first mission to Ghana in March 1998. This program is an ongoing annual mission to African countries. · Trade And Commerce Program: AERCG has developed a Trade Program which is part and parcel of AERCG=s Sustainable Development initiatives in tackling the root causes of socio-economic, environmental and human health in marginalized communities in Africa. The program was first unveiled and implemented to Ghana in April 1998. This program is an ongoing annual mission to African countries. · Women Program: AERCG developed a Program for an holistic women program for African communities. This program was unveiled in March 1998 for Ghana. The program includes women=s health, socio-political, economic, environmental management, education and empowerment. The program designed components have been designed and grants are being solicited for implementation jointly with the government of Ghana and in-country grassroots women's organizations.
