The following links will connect you to many of the organizations and journals valuable to professionals in the field of ecology. The American Institute of Biological Sciences
The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) was chartered by the U.S. government in 1947 as a nonprofit scientific organization to advance research and education in the biological, medical, environmental, and agricultural sciences. Animal Behaviour Journal
Animal Behaviour is a leading international publication. It contains critical reviews, original papers, and research articles on all aspects of animal behaviour. Animal Behaviour is a popular journal read by biologists, ethologists, psychologists, physiologists, and veterinarians.
BIOSIS is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to foster the growth, communication, and use of biological knowledge for the common good. It maintains the world's largest collection of abstracts and bibliographic references to biological and medical literature. BIOSIS processes approximately 550,000 items each year, from primary research and review journals to books, monographs, and conference proceedings. The Internet Resource Guide for Ecology contains a large and comprehensive list of links pertinent to the science of ecology. The California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences' mission is to shed light on the wonders and value of the natural world through its exhibits, research, lectures, courses, publications, symposia, and expeditions. It is a private, nonprofit institution, supported by donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals, and by the City and County of San Francisco.

Editorial , part of Special Feature on Integrated Natural Resource Management Research to Integrate Productivity Enhancement, Environmental Protection, and Human Development Jeffrey A. Sayer and Bruce Campbell
WWF (World Wildlife Fund) CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research)

ABSTRACT To meet the challenges of poverty and environmental sustainability, a different kind of research will be needed. This research will need to embrace the complexity of these systems by redirecting the objectives of research toward enhancing adaptive capacity, by incorporating more participatory approaches, by embracing key principles such as multi-scale analysis and intervention, and by the use of a variety of tools (e.g., systems analysis, information management tools, and impact assessment tools). Integration will be the key concept in the new approach; integration across scales, components, stakeholders, and disciplines. Integrated approaches, as described in this Special Feature, will require changes in the culture and organization of research.

MA Affiliated Scientific Organizations and National Academies of Science
On this page: National Academies of Science Scientific Organizations Becoming an MA Affiliated Organization To facilitate continued interactions with the scientific community in particular, the MA established a network of Affiliated Scientific Organizations. The MA invited international, regional or national scientific societies, academies, ministries, or other organizations responsible for fostering scientific, technical or technological research, monitoring, or assessment or linking scientific research or assessment to the needs of decision-makers to become Affiliated Scientific Organizations and Academies to the MA (ASO). The world’s National Academies of Sciences represent a unique body of expertise with a unique stature in national policy-making. To help ensure that the MA reached experts in all countries and to help facilitate the dissemination of MA findings within countries, the MA, with the support of the Third World Academy of Sciences and the InterAcademy Panel, established a group of Affiliated Scientific Organizations and Academies of Sciences (ASO). The MA ASO list includes more than 20 academies and other international organizations. These ASOs received review drafts of the Conceptual Framework, all Assessment chapters and synthesis documents, and have played integral roles in the distribution of reports. The ASO members as of September 2004 are listed and briefly described below.

    Institute for Social Ecology
Established in 1974 and incorporated in 1981, the ISE is an independent institution of higher education dedicated to the study of social ecology, an interdisciplinary field drawing on philosophy, political and social theory, anthropology, history, economics, the natural sciences, and feminism. The ISE offers intensive summer programs, a year-round B.A. degree program, workshops on issues such as biotechnology, fall and winter lecture series, internship opportunities, and a speakers bureau. ISE's campus also plays host to art exhibits, conferences, and other events... As both an educational and activist organization, the ISE is committed to the social and ecological transformation of society. It is the ISE's core belief that the human potential to play a creative role in natural and social evolution can be realized, thereby allowing us to foster communities free from hierarchy, social inequity, and ecological degradation. The ISE views the global penetration of systems of domination into daily life, the centralization of political and economic power, the homogenization of culture, and the strengthening of hierarchy and social control as impediments to human freedom and the root causes of the current ecological crisis.

What is the Baltimore Ecosystem Study?
When people think of ecology, they usually imagine studies out in the country. The next thing they think of is studies involving the relationship of plants and animals to one another. They also imagine studies that show how organisms relate to the physical environment air, water, and soil. People and cities usually don't come to mind when ecology is mentioned. But ecologists now realize that it is important to understand cities and suburbs, because about three quarters of the people in the United States live in metropolitan areas. More people are also moving to cities throughout the world. So ecologists want to know how organisms and environments in and around cities are affected by the buildings and paved surfaces, the things that people do, and the new environments that cities create. To do that ecologists have to work with other researchers who understand people. That means more than just knowing how many people there are in an area. Understanding the urban environment requires that we understand how people are interact as groups and organizations that make decisions. What people do and build in and around cities affect the environment and the plants and animals for many miles around

These scientists maintain the state’s zoological collections; conduct primary research in the natural sciences; collaborate on research projects with area universities, state and federal agencies and international organizations; and interpret natural history to the public. Research curators also serve on exhibit development committees for the new Museum of Natural Sciences. The Museum is located within commuting distance of North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina Central University and plays an important supporting role in natural sciences study at the university level.
