Links to home pages of botanical and ecological societies are provided in the Journals and Societies List. The Ecological Software List offers links to sites describing software applications for analyzing or organizing ecological data. The Natural Resource Agencies List provides links to home pages of government agencies that conduct ecological research or that are responsible for the management of various ecosystems. The Natural Areas and Reserves heading lists links to sites that feature information about natural areas, LTER sites, national parks, and wilderness areas. The Environment List refers to sites dealing with ecosytem conditions and the Environmental Societies List is a catalog of links to home pages of environmental organizations. R esources included here will be of interest to botanists, plant ecologists, conservation biologists, resource managers, and to students at the university or high school levels. In addition, many of these web sites may be useful to those wishing to learn more about local or global environments. In a time when humans are increasingly influencing and integrated with the ecosystems in which we live, it is important for all of us to be literate in basic ecological concepts and aware of environmental issues.

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur in Florida
Chicago, IL- The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced grants totaling $2.5 million to five Florida institutions in honor of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur, who established the Foundation in 1978 and who lived in Florida during the latter years of their lives.
Grants of $500,000 each have been awarded to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts (West Palm Beach); the Catherine T. MacArthur School of Continuing Education of Palm Beach Atlantic University (West Palm Beach); the Conservation Fund, a national organization active in Palm Beach County; the MacArthur Agro-Ecology Research Center (Lake Placid); and the Friends of MacArthur Park, an organization that works in behalf of the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (North Palm Beach).
While living in Florida, John D. MacArthur engaged in extensive business and real estate activities. He was instrumental in the founding of Palm Beach Gardens, sold the land on which many southeast Florida housing and commercial developments are now located, and donated land that ultimately became much of what is now the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.

Class Analysis and Historical Change The CAHC program offers the opportunity to develop a rigorous and systematic understanding of Marxist and other radical frameworks within sociology. The unity of the program lies less in a specific set of substantive areas than in a general commitment to engaging the core questions posed by radical traditions of social theory, challenging the theoretical orientation of mainstream sociology and developing critical alternatives. The program is built around two core courses (given each year), several core seminars (each given at least once every three years) and a number of specialized seminars (given on an irregular basis). Students also participate in the Havens Center Visiting Scholar's Program seminar, in which they have an opportunity to meet with prominent critical scholars from around the world. Faculty List Communities and Urban Sociology: The Sociology of Communities focuses broadly on communities as systems of social relationships, with regard to their structure, function, relations with larger systems, and the processes that lead to change. The teaching and research interests of faculty in this area cover a wide range of subjects. In focusing on various issues, emphasis is placed on the application of a variety of theoretical perspectives, some of which are interdisciplinary in character. (

THE VENEZUELAN LONG-TERM ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH NETWORK Wilfredo Franco Chair of the Venezuelan LTER Network Coordinating Committee Introduction Venezuela is a South American country of nearly one million square kilometers and a population of 22 million people. The country is divided in three quite different regions: a) the coastal and mountain region, which comprises one third of the surface but supports 90 percent of the population; b) the flat alluvial region of the Orinoco Llanos, which comprises about 20 percent of the country; and c) the Guayana-Amazonas region, which is the southern half of the country and is still very sparsely populated. This territorial and economical distribution determines a wide demand for long-term ecological research, which varies from the study of the environmental impact of the industrial and urban development in the North to the inventory of the still quite unknown biological diversity in the southern half of the country. The Venezuelan government, through the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICIT) and encouraged by the success of the US LTER Network, decided in 1996 to establish and support the Venezuelan Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network in cooperation with scientific institutions throughout the country. In December 1996, CONICIT created the Commission for the LTER Network, which carried on a review process of 14 potential sites, of which nine were selected using the following criteria:

he 27 July 2001 special issue of Science focused on research endeavors aimed at "studying ecosystems across the long march of time." The long-term approach to ecological research has spurred new insights into topics ranging from the ecological impacts of overfishing in historical time to the dynamics of plant communities in settings from field to forest. Not surprisingly in an area that stresses huge amounts of data splayed across space and time, and the sharing of observations and insights among scientists in diverse fields the study of ecosystems generally and long-term studies in particular have spawned a rich assemblage of online offerings. Here are pointers to few of our favorites.

WHAT DO ECOLOGISTS DO? The work of ecologists is extremely important. Anything that involves whole organisms and the living and non-living things around them involves ecology. Whether they investigate urban, suburban, rural, forest, desert, farm, fresh water, estuarine, or marine environments, ecologists help us understand the connections between organisms and their environment. Ecologists are employed in many different places - universities, government agencies, consulting firms, research laboratories, museums, field stations, parks and recreation areas, and industry - and their salaries are similar to other employees with the same amount of experience and academic training.
