The Life Cycle of Business is Studied Through Organizational Ecology
August 2002 What makes some businesses sprout, grow, adapt, and succeed, while most never get off the ground? Researchers in the growing field of organizational ecology say it is not enough to study the companies that thrive. Answers lie in the stories of failure. Research By William P. Barnett

    ECOLOGY-GRID CONTRIBUTES TO TAIWAN'S OUTDOORS
Taiwan's great outdoors is getting some preservation help from the international community with a research project in Fushan. This project allows ecologists to link their information and ideas with others. The recent completion of the first ecology-grid system at the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute's (IFRI) Fushan Research Station in Ilan County, makes it possible for Taiwan to contribute its ecological data to the international community. With this latest move, Taiwan can help ensure the future of its biodiversity and at the same time contribute to the increasing global debate on ecological issues. By working with the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) under the National Science Council (NSC), results of research and observations carried out by ecologists at the 1,100-hectare research site can be made available to counterparts overseas by way of the eco-grid system. A little grebe makes its nest in the Fushan research site.

Linking Industrial Ecology to Public Policy
    Report of a Workshop
    Executive Summary
This report summarizes a workshop held at the White House Conference Center in Washington, DC, on April 30, 1998. It was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and organized by Clinton Andrews, Rutgers University; David Rejeski, Council on Environmental Quality; and Robert Socolow and Valerie Thomas, Princeton University. The 44 participants in this day-long event included 18 representatives from 9 different federal governmental agencies, 13 from academia, 6 from non-governmental organizations, 4 from private firms, and 3 from state and local government. Industrial ecology is a new field that takes a systems view of the use and environmental implications of materials, energy, and products in industrial societies. It exploits the ecological analogy by placing industrial activity in its environmental context and by drawing on nature as a model. Exogenous forces have created an intellectual climate that is now receptive to the industrial ecology paradigm. Certain environmental problems are severe and growing worse, and they are intimately linked to global population growth, our material aspirations, and the organization and performance of the economy. The goal of this workshop was to establish a dialogue between the industrial ecology research community and environmental policy-makers. The workshop included sessions on the past achievements, emerging issues, and new goals for industrial ecology. Each session addressed the concerns of government, industry and non-governmental organizations, and researchers. Panelists introduced each topic and then the group actively brainstormed lists, creating a vivid snapshot of the field and where it is headed. Illustrative selections from the lists include:
