Human Ecology encompasses a variety of disciplines that utilize an integrative, synergistic, holistic approach to address basic human needs and societal issues that impact the well-being of individuals, families, consumers and communities. Content areas include: nutrition and dietetics, merchandising and consumer studies, child life, family science, applied child development, and family and consumer sciences education. Human Ecology programs have been an integral part of Louisiana Tech University since its inception in 1894. Tech was the first university in the state and the third in the south to offer programs in human ecology disciplines.

that focuses on ways to improve comfort, performance, and health through the ergonomic design of products and environments. Recent research focuses on the role of ambient physical characteristics in human well-being. Among the settings examined in recent years are schools, day care, homes, blue-collar work, and health care facilities. Human environment processes of interest include psychophysiological stress, psychological distress, learning and motivation, interpersonal relationships, mastery and control, emotional affect, including preference and satisfaction, and human development over the lifespan. Ecotecture
Ecotecture design is grounded on natural dynamics, healthy materials, biological principles, human ergonomics, cultural respect, and compassionate understanding for the planet and all living creatures. This is a new research program intended to push the boundaries of thinking on what constitutes sustainable or "green" design. International Workplace Studies Program (IWSP)
The International Workplace Studies Program (IWSP) at Cornell University conducts research on the ecology of new ways of working and innovative workplace strategies. The intent of the research is to help organizations gain a competitive advantage by better understanding how innovative workplace strategies contribute to the effectiveness of individuals, teams, and the organization as a whole.

A. INTRODUCTION
The Brazilian Long Term Ecological Research Program (BLTER), to be sponsored by the National Research Council of Brazil (CNPq), is being designed as a collaborative effort of scientists and graduate students working in different biogeographical regions throughout the country. The BLTER is being coordinated within the Integrated Ecological Program (IEP) of the National Research Council of Brazil (CNPq) and of CAPES (Ministry of Education). The IEP is a network of 13 graduate programs in ecology and conservation dedicated to a common research agenda, to be implemented during the period of 1996-2005, which is also responsible for the definition of regional and thematic priorities for ecological investigation.

A number of prominent research organizations, such as NCEAS, LTER, the UC Natural Integrating Marine ecology Data for Scientific Analysis and Resource
http://www.nceas.ucsb.edu/nceas-web/informatics/
Informatics Research at NCEAS The major element of NCEAS' mission is "to advance the state of ecological knowledge through the search for general patterns and principles". To achieve this goal, scientists at NCEAS must frequently use existing data from a number of different sources. This reliance on thematically and structurally diverse data to advance synthesis and analyses generates a number of challenging issues with regards to accessing, organizing, and understanding those data. The mission of our informatics research program is to develop informatics solutions that facilitate synthetic research and are broadly useful to the ecological research community.
more on our informatics mission...

NCEAS' Approach to Informatics Solutions Research at NCEAS relies on access to existing data on a broad variety of topics, and these data currently are extremely hard to locate, access, interpret, and analyze. Our approach to informatics uses extensive documentation about data (i.e., metadata) to overcome these data management challenges. Thus, most of our tools utilize metadata to effectively handle the complexity of ecological data sources.

The following links will connect you to many of the organizations and journals valuable to professionals in the field of ecology. The American Institute of Biological Sciences
The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) was chartered by the U.S. government in 1947 as a nonprofit scientific organization to advance research and education in the biological, medical, environmental, and agricultural sciences. Animal Behaviour Journal
Animal Behaviour is a leading international publication. It contains critical reviews, original papers, and research articles on all aspects of animal behaviour. Animal Behaviour is a popular journal read by biologists, ethologists, psychologists, physiologists, and veterinarians.
BIOSIS is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to foster the growth, communication, and use of biological knowledge for the common good. It maintains the world's largest collection of abstracts and bibliographic references to biological and medical literature. BIOSIS processes approximately 550,000 items each year, from primary research and review journals to books, monographs, and conference proceedings. The Internet Resource Guide for Ecology contains a large and comprehensive list of links pertinent to the science of ecology. The California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences' mission is to shed light on the wonders and value of the natural world through its exhibits, research, lectures, courses, publications, symposia, and expeditions. It is a private, nonprofit institution, supported by donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals, and by the City and County of San Francisco.

Questionable Organizations: An Overview
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Promoters of questionable health practices often form organizations to multiply their effectiveness. How can one tell which groups are reliable and which are not? There is no sure way, but nine precautionary questions may help: 1. Are its ideas inside the scientific mainstream? Some groups admit that they were formed because their founders felt alienated from the scientific community. One group that made no secret of this was actually called the American Quack Association , whose main purposes were to provide emotional support to its members, poke fun at their critics, and stimulate positive public feelings toward unconventional practitioners. The group was founded in 1985 by Jonathan Wright, M.D., who became its president, and Roy Kupsinel, M.D., a "holistic" practitioner from Florida, who became its vice-president. It attracted about 300 members but no longer appears active. 2. Who are its leaders and advisors?
