Air Quality
Air pollution control in Washington is based on a set of local, state, and federal laws and regulations involving three levels of government. The federal government, through the Environmental Protection agency, sets air pollution standards that apply nationally. The state government, through Ecology and, in some cases, the Energy Facility site Evaluation council (EFSEC), is required to implement federal standards. A third level of government, local air pollution control agencies, also have broad responsibilities for implementing air pollution control activities within their single or multi-county jurisdictions. Ecology implements and enforces air regulations with jurisdiction over all sources located in counties that do not have activated local authorities. Within the Gorge Region, S.W. Air Pollution Control is responsible for monitoring air quality in Skamania County and Ecology enforces regulations in Klickitat County. Additionally, Ecology has jurisdiction over primary aluminum plants, pulp mills, vehicles, and vehicle-related sources. Local authorities may implement and enforce most state regulations, and all local agencies have their own regulations that may be more restrictive than those of Ecology.

Description
Biochemical Systematics and Ecology is devoted to the publication of original papers and reviews, both submitted and invited, in two subject areas:(i) the application of biochemistry to problems relating to systematic biology of organisms (biochemical systematics);(ii) the role of biochemistry in interactions between organisms or between an organism and its environment (biochemical ecology).Papers will be grouped in each issue according to subject area. Research papers should generally be of completed investigations. Preliminary reports will be published where findings are considered to be of sufficient interest to justify rapid publication. In addition, short reports of new sources of known compounds (New Source Reports) will be accepted where they can be justified in terms of systematic or ecological significance. These reports must be written to a standard format.
One volume will appear annually and eleven issues will constitute a volume.

Overall Objectives
Students get an overview of Arctic natural history, current research in Arctic ecology, practice field sampling techniques, develop research proposal ideas, become involved in ongoing studies in landscape and ecosystem ecology, and are exposed to Inuit perspectives on regional land-use issues and understanding of the land.
Two Main Features
Education/Research: The course provides the experience a beginning research scientist needs to ask relevant questions and collect the right data in the unique setting of the Arctic. Students:
    • Are exposed to Arctic research projects and topics
    • Gain data collection skills
    • Generate research questions and proposal ideas
    • Meet with working scientists, local Inuit, and other students to discuss our activities
    • Gain confidence and knowledge to design and conduct original research Exploration: We encourage students to explore the regions we visit in a variety of ways. Scientists rarely have the opportunity to spend a great deal of time observing, listening, and gathering knowledge about the physical and natural systems of these remote areas. The program permits you to take hikes, maintain a field journal, and gain insights into this special region of the earth. Note: These very adventurous journeys do not require any special experience. We use the best equipment available, and have personal safety at the top of every list. Each participant receives a detailed set of information to help prepare for all aspects of the program. Credit will be offered for the courses through the
