For more than a decade, National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program has been helping transform the nation's college and university campuses into living models of an ecologically sustainable society, and training a new generation of environmental leaders. Campus Ecology supports and promotes positive and practical conservation projects on campus and beyond to protect wildlife by restoring habitat and slowing global warming.
Middlebury used worm castings to aid in the new plantings for Dining Services' organic greenhouse.

The ecology of the connecticon by Frank Rennie and Robin Mason
The utilisation of broadband technology in supporting entrepreneurial activity is explored in an attempt to understand the educational skills demanded in the new millennium. A model of a complex adaptive system is proposed that incorporates the whole technical infrastructure of the Internet, plus the human resource utilisation of the Internet users, together with increased levels of interactivity, both between users and between different types of communication devices. We have called this complex system the Connecticon, and attempt to explain some of its key emergent properties. From these we make some suggestions for optimising the changes to conventional practices that we call innovation.

Introduction
The dictionary definition of an entrepreneur is 'a business person who seeks to make a profit by risk and initiative' (CED, 2001) In terms of providing education and training to support the formation of this type of person we are faced with two major problems:
  • Education does not like risk; it is a constructive science that works by building something new onto something old and in doing so achieves an incremental growth in understanding.

A social ecology of wireless technology by Critical Friends of Technology
Wireless technology serves many valid human purposes. Wireless technologies have penetrated the remotest corners of the globe and will soon be ubiquitous, with billions of units in use. In this report we consider both costs and risks of wireless technologies, employing a holistic framework for evaluating technological impacts. We discuss wireless technology in developing countries, environmental issues associated with wireless, and health concerns.

    Conclusion
    Introduction
Critical Friends of Technology (CFT) is a small informal team of researchers interested in promoting a holistic understanding of the benefits, possible adverse effects, and unintended consequences of different kinds of information and communications technology (ICT). CFT includes two computer scientists, two anthropologists, a reference librarian, and a physician. All of us work in the San Francisco Bay Area. In this paper we attempt to look systemically at wireless technology in hope of finding ways to anticipate and mitigate possible adverse effects and unintended consequences of this very useful technology. Historically, radio spectrum has been viewed as a scarce resource. This credo is almost seventy years old and has been based on technology from the 1930s. In the United States the Federal Communications Commission has been at the center of the debates and battles to determine how to allocate what is perceived to be a scarce resource. This administrative process has been responsive to commercial and political forces. Spectrum use has been determined administratively and more recently by auction. These complex processes have shaped the kinds of services and products available to consumers. While there is considerable excitement and innovation taking place with wireless, earlier optimistic estimates have been tempered because the telecommunications companies have not recovered from the depression that hit in 2001.

The American Society for Acoustic Ecology (ASAE) is a membership organization dedicated to exploring the role of sound in natural habitats and human societies, and promoting public dialogue concerning the identification, preservation, and restoration of natural and cultural sound environments. The ASAE will:
    • Disseminate research results and curriculum materials, sponsor lectures, conferences and other events, and support creative exploration of the soundscape through sound art and installations.
    • Foster cross-disciplinary research and discussion about the impacts of natural and human-made sound on the biosphere, including Earth's oceans, land, and air, and contribute to the development of guidelines to identify and modify human-generated acoustic environments that pose a significant ecological or health risk.
    • Provide advice to public and private land managers about how best to study, manage, and interpret natural sound environments for the benefit of both visitors and wildlife, with sensitivity to the desire for both quiet and motorized recreation.

Our mission is to assemble and share knowledge about nature in order to improve education, health, agriculture, economic development, and conservation throughout the world.
Discover Life helps you to identify things, share ways to teach and study nature's wonders, use maps, report your findings, and contribute to and learn from the Web's growing encyclopedia of life. The Polistes Foundation and its partners plan to make identification guides, maps, images, and valuable data on a million species freely available to everyone by 2012. So far we have some information on 217,312 species. We invite you to join us in our quest to reduce disease, increase food production, stop destructive species, protect endangered ones, and enjoy rather than struggle with nature. RESEARCH Research areas at LEML include: Landscape Ecology Urban Ecology Ecological Modeling , and Sustainability Science
Our current research projects focus on: interactions between landscape pattern and population/ecosystem processes, pattern and process in urban landscapes and their ecological consequences, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and integrating ecological, economic, and societal processes to create and maintain sustainable landscapes. Our research has involved a variety of ecosystems, including deserts, grasslands and forests in North America and Asia. While the geographic idiosyncracy of ecology must be recognized, it is the research questions that drive our studies. Our research approaches combine theoretical and empirical methods, with an emphasis on systems analysis, spatial modeling, spatial statistics, GIS, and remote sensing.
