About the Course
Ecology focuses on the interaction of organisms with each other and the environment. This course examines the proximate and ultimate causes of patterns in the distribution and abundance of individual organisms, and in the composition, structure and dynamics of communities, ecosystems, landscapes, and the biosphere. We study these relationships, often in quantitative terms, in both field and laboratory settings, using both theoretical and empirical approaches.
Course Objectives

The University General Education program strives to add breadth to the educational experience. It helps students widen their perspectives, explore the relationships between various subjects, and develop critical and analytical thinking skills. Effective Fall 1997, new students with no previously acquired Kansas State University or transfer credit will be required to meet University General Education expectations. Minimum University General Education (UGE) requirements:
  • All students must meet UGE requirement of 18 credits in approved general education courses, six of which are upper division credits (300-level or higher). Only courses taken at Kansas State University will be used to meet the UGE requirements. To ensure breadth in the general education experience, each student must complete at least one approved UGE course in four of the following areas.
    • Quantitative studies (except MATH 100) Economics Social sciences Humanities Life sciences Physical sciences A course from a professional college
Students should consult with their academic advisers to assure that their choices of approved UGE courses meet the required distribution.

114. Numerous Wetland Vegetation And Wildlife Management Challenges
ecology and management of montane wetlands general description of this project; Detailed study plan for this project; The web site for this project
http://www.nrmsc.usgs.gov/research/montane_wetlands.htm
Ecology and management of montane wetlands
In the Northern Rocky Mountains, numerous wetland vegetation and wildlife management challenges are apparent. The response of wetland vegetation to the short growing season coupled with a complex surface and subsurface hydrology is poorly understood. Challenges in northern montane wetlands are often related to the establishment and maintenance of desired plant distribution and structure. Maintaining wetland processes in these man-modified systems requires additional understanding of dynamics within and among years in relation to historic wetland management strategies. This involves not only ecological questions, but geological and spatial data ones, as well. The scientific questions in which we are interested are understanding how geologic and hydrologic processes interrelate to affect wetland conditions, especially vegetation and invertebrates as they in turn relate to patterns of use by wetland birds and other wildlife. Refuge managers find it very challenging to develop annual schedules of management practices reflecting the actual dynamics of their wetland systems because almost no information exists about the ecology of Northern Rocky Mountain wetlands. One requirement for managing montane wetlands is a thorough understanding of many interrelated abiotic and biotic parameters. This may be based on scientific field studies and empirical, predictive modeling, and others on more qualitative, expert knowledge. Approaches are needed that blend these types of data and information in ways that help refuge managers in their annual process of making decisions.

March 30, 2005
The school has been a target in the past, most recently in the early 1990s, then-President Nils Hasselmo wanted to close General College as part of a plan to raise overall standards. (MPR Photo/Marisa Helms) General College and Human Ecology, two colleges that have been an integral part of the university's Twin Cities campus for much of the last century, would be swallowed up by other colleges under recommendations made by a task force formed by the university president. Much of General College, which has offered underprepared students an opportunity to attend the university for about 75 years, would be absorbed by the College of Education and Human Development, according to the plan. Many programs in Human Ecology, which has existed for more than 100 years, would become part of a new College of Design, university officials said.

Research aims and methodology

Since 1980 the working group has used a holistic approach for a general description of the structure and function of Central Amazonian floodplains. This approach led to the formulation of the flood pulse concept published in 1989. The concept states that the flood pulse is the driving variable of the system and that biotic and abiotic processes in the Aquatic-Terrestrial Transition Zone (ATTZ) are primary regulators of species composition, food webs and nutrient dynamics. During recent years, there has been increasing emphasis on understanding land-water interactions, particularly within the context of the concepts of ecotone, landscape heterogeneity and patch dynamics. Floodplains are sometimes interpreted as ecotones between upland and rivers, and sometimes they are viewed as specific ecosystems. We foresee that our studies of the floodplains in Brazil will make significant contributions to the controversial discussion of the ecotone concept. During the past few years, the working group has gradually shifted its focus to the following questions, which we consider to be of special interest for the study of floodplain systems.

he 27 July 2001 special issue of Science focused on research endeavors aimed at "studying ecosystems across the long march of time." The long-term approach to ecological research has spurred new insights into topics ranging from the ecological impacts of overfishing in historical time to the dynamics of plant communities in settings from field to forest. Not surprisingly in an area that stresses huge amounts of data splayed across space and time, and the sharing of observations and insights among scientists in diverse fields the study of ecosystems generally and long-term studies in particular have spawned a rich assemblage of online offerings. Here are pointers to few of our favorites.
