Document Actions Welcome to the homepage of CLGE The Central Laboratory of General Ecology (CLGE) was established in 1996, as a successor to the Institute of Ecology (1989-1995) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). Currently, CLGE functions as a scientific entity within BAS and has distinct administrative boundaries. Now CLGE is the only academic unit in the country dealing by definition with theoretical aspects of ecology and biodiversity. The Central Laboratory of General Ecology is dedicated to these and other fields of modern Ecology. We will continue to develop our studies in the avanguard of research carried out in the BAS. The scope of research interests of the CLGE includes two main aspects:
  • basic research, aimed at better understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, including inventory, status and trends in biodiversity, as well as structure, function and dynamics of ecosystems;

Welcome to the Iguana iguana Bibliography - a list of scientific papers and books concerned with the ecology, biology, behaviour and care of the green iguana. All references listed are sorted both alphabetically and by topic. Select an alphabetical group of references, or a category. You can swap between categories and alphabetical listings as you wish.

GENERAL BIOLOGY - Information and research into a green iguana's biology, morphology and related behaviour. - The behaviour of the green iguana in the wild and in captivity, including social structure and communication. - Reproduction in the green iguana, from searching for a mate to courtship, nesting and hatching of the young. Each reference has been placed into one or more categories (see left). If you are looking for a particular subject, decide which category it fits into best and look for it there. If you can't find what you're looking for, try another category. For example, a paper on iguana diets in captivity would be under BIO and CAP, but diets in the wild may be under ECO and BIO instead.

Understanding Lakes In the absence of any living organisms, a lake contains a wide array of molecules and ions from the weathering of soils in the watershed , the atmosphere, and the lake bottom. Therefore, the chemical composition of a lake is fundamentally a function of its climate (which affects its hydrology ) and its basin geology. Each lake has an ion balance of the three major anions and four major cations (see Table 4). Table 4. ION BALANCE FOR TYPICAL FRESH WATER Anions Percent Cations Percent HCO Ca SO Mg Cl Na K other other
Ion balance means the sum of the negative ions equals the sum of the positive cations when expressed as equivalents. These ions are usually present at concentrations expressed as mg/L (parts per million, or ppm ppb ) levels. Humans can have profound influences on lake chemistry. Excessive landscape disturbance causes higher rates of leaching and erosion by removing vegetative cover, exposing soil, and increasing water runoff velocity. Lawn fertilizers, wastewater and urban stormwater inputs all add

presents GENERAL ECOLOGY an introduction by Jason Buchheim
Director, Odyssey Expeditions Index ECOLOGY - The science that treats the spectrum of interrelationships existing between organisms and their environment and among groups of organisms. Ecology is the science that is concerned with how individual organisms and populations of organisms live together and with their environmental surroundings. The reason environmentalism and ecology get mixed up in the media is that the scientific basis of an endangered species problems come from studies ecologists have conducted determining the ecological relationship between the species and its deteriorating environmental conditions. The environmentalists use these studies as the backbone for reasons to protect and preserve our natural environments. GENERAL ECOLOGY- basics and definitions Basics of ecological understanding.

Ecological processes:
  • Effects of an ectoparasite on population dynamics and demography of hosts
  • Parasite founder density and demographic levels of competition on the parasites' population dynamics
  • Parasite transmission and the evolution of parasite virulence
Behavioural processes:
  • Effect of ectoparasites on mate choice, mate fidelity and social behaviour
  • time-trade-offs between foraging, nest sanitation and body care
  • behavioural host responses
Evolutionary processes:
  • Mechanisms of parasite resistance, MHC-analysis
  • genetics of immunocompetence and signalling
  • maternal effects, antigene-antibody analysis
  • costs and benefits of induced host responses
  • parasite-mediated life-history changes in hosts
  • trade-offs between life-history traits and parasite resistance
  • local host and parasite adaptation
B) Animal welfare studies: Causation of feather pecking in domesticated hens and quails
  • Experimental analysis of the causation of feather pecking
  • Development of housing conditions which prevent feather pecking
  • Application to large scale production systems

General Description
Workshop: Meta Analysis in Ecology - An Introductory Practicum 3 Days; February 09-11, 2005 Location: Kananaskis Field Stations - Barrier Lake Station of the University of Calgary Cost: $600 includes MetaWin software, accommodation, and meals Meta-analysis is the quantitative synthesis of the results of independent experiments. It allows investigators to summarize the results to determine average responses across studies, to ask if these results are significantly greater than zero when all studies are taken into account, to test how the responses differ among the studies, and ask whether those differences are greater than would be expected due to chance.
Meta-analysis, in combination with ecological theory and a collection of well-executed primary studies, helps us describe patterns of variation in responses, test ideas designed to explain these patterns, and generate new hypotheses when existing theory fails. In this light, meta-analysis-and quantitative synthesis in general is a central and indispensable part of the scientific method
